For the first 30 chapters this manga was plain average. Nothing special but not bad either and I kept reading. After the big twist I gotta say I have high hopes for future chapters. It became much more interesting and jumped my rating from 7 to 8. I hope it can climb up to 9 even. And I don't understand why the plot twist ticks people off. Without it this would be just another plain teenage/band/love triangle/whatever manga.
EDIT: Sadly my expectations were too much and it seems the story reduces itself into plain mediocrity...
This manga is focused on telling the struggles of a rising indie rock band trying to become better than the famous band they idolize. The romance portion is a secondary minor element. It is only ever touched upon regarding how it affects the band as a whole.
This manga is NOT a sequel to the author's earlier work Suzuka. It is only very loosely connected. You can read this manga without reading Suzuka and not miss anything. Many readers have a knee-jerk negative reaction to the early plot twist (chapter 36 out of 195 total chapters). This is the reason for so many 1 ratings. This could have been mostly avoided if the author had named the manga differently and/or avoided the connection to his earlier work.
The title refers to the 2 female vocalists for the band, both of whom are named Fuuka (similar to the manga Nana named for the 2 main female characters). The first Fuuka is the driving force behind creating the band, and is the daughter of the main characters from Suzuka. Her death early in the story was necessary for how it finally ends.
I really enjoy what the author can put out but... seriously (no spoilers here) why... would you change up a story like this just as it was starting to build... I don't think I will continue reading this. SSJR2 comment on (October 28th, 2014, 2:39am) proves a good point. /flips table/
Honestly i liked reading Kimi no Iru Machi cause it had some interesting drama and situation at points but looking back at that, Suzuka and now this...This Mangaka needs to start doing something a little more interesting. For this storyline its pretty basic and boring at times cause its just another unpopular dude who (seemingly out of nowhere) gets a harem of girls who likes him... The story wasnt that interesting to me but i wanted to see how it played out but yea. Later something happens that launches a major twist in the game and i dont think its for the better. Its a major spoiler so dont read if you dont wanna know.
Later on they pretty much kill off the main heroine and for me it was just for shock value. I mean to ruin Suzuka's story for that and this story just to add random tragedy is just crazy to me. I dont know who will care to finish this after doing that and i dont get where they will go after that since everything revolved around her...I think this will probably end soon
The manga was pretty much par for the course for the author but the twist that is kind of shocking made me give this an 8/10. Its looking good as long as he can really pull this off. Twist occurs in chapter 36 and 37
the first 34 chapters where very interesting, refreshing, and a big change to all of seo's manga but after that i just dropped the series for something that i don't want to spoil. original rating 9 now 3
First of all, I actually like Seo Kouji's works, so I'm not one of these people bashing this just because they're mad about Kimi no Iru Machi or something.
That said, this particular series really rubs me the wrong way. It reads like blatant wish fulfillment. Dorky guy just happens to be childhood friends with a super popular idol, becomes friends with a cute girl at school (who just happens to be the daughter of the protagonists in Suzuka) who just happens to want to be like that same idol, goes to a summer job and just happens to become acquainted with the band he's always liked, puts on a school concert and some big American pop start just happens to be passing by (seriously, at a Japanese high school...like that happens). Come on...
I can accept one 'just happens' in any manga. They're often necessary plot devices to get things going. But this series just tosses out one after another without the slightest appreciation for how absurdly unrealistic it all is. It's both lazy writing and makes the whole manga just too hard to swallow. It seriously needs to be grounded but at this point I feel like it's already too late to be salvaged. Even though it's still early in the series the roots of the problems go all the way down to the very premise.
I can't relate anything in this manga...
I can only count a handful of good love romance stories written for the male audience, and i mean a love story, not that harem ecchi action garbage everywhere. Seo kouji kinda dropped the ball on kimi no iru machi, but it was a good attempt to build on the genre of real romances written for shounen.
The art is really good, typical of seo kouji, and the story early on brings in many memorable moments from suzuka. But the story definitely takes a different direction, which gets established early on after thr first few introductory chapters.
This is not highschool drama queen jumping baka version 2, but it flashes potential all the good core elements that made seo kouji's romances so popular. But its not without its flaws.. If you can endure the inevitable love triangles, misunderstandings, indecisive protagionist, slow romance development, and chapters of heartbreak that are typical of seo kouji, this may turn out to be a masterpiece at the end, we will see.
Looking forward to seeing
I thought the art looked familiar. First off, I'll start by saying that the description is totally lacking. A chick breaks his phone, so see where it goes from there? Nowhere interesting, I'm sure. Seeing how this mangaka made the never-ending, indecisive garbage dump that is Kimi no Iru Machi, I can only expect the same from this series. Just looking at the categories I can see that disgusting complexes and triangles abound. Even if I was wrong in that assumption, it's still just so boring that my 9-year-old nephew can make a more interesting plot. You can basically tell what's going to happen pages down the line. Just another generic piece of trash I gave the time of day to try out. Also, misunderstandings aren't funny, especially in another language. A bland romance about a school idol. I never see anything original anymore. Everything is just a rehash. Less and less manga worth reading...
typical harem, unrealistic plot, indecisive dude that has no balls and a totally predictable ending as to whom will be the one he finally settles down with. It's not best to get too excited about this, it may even be axed in the end because it just continues to be the same shit. It's improved a little, so far, especially with that crazy ass twist.
