UPDATE (10/27): I initially wrote a mixed review of this, seen below; same as Kouji-sensei's other works, yadda yadda. But the recent development has me thinking that he's gonna do something else. It could be a gimmick, or it could work dramatically to his favor. It's all in the execution. And there's no way this event is a one-off thing that won't have lasting effects on the story.
ORIGINAL
I continue to read this out of some weird loyalty to Seo Kouji, like how I continued to read Kimi no Iru Machi in the last 100 or so chapters of its serialization. It ties in to both KNIM (slightly, as it used the final chapter as a pseudo backdoor pilot) and is a "sequel" to Suzuka, in that the main heroine, Fuuka, is the daughter of Yamato and Suzuka.
As always, Seo's art style is great and has only become sharper and sharper. Characters and environments are drawn splendidly. The first chapter has an extremely well-done color version. Fuuka, in particular, is the splitting image of Suzuka but has a personality that shows she is indeed her parents' child, ranging from moody to cheery. As a heroine, she's fun to follow. The side character Mikasa is one of the least tropey characters I've seen in a while, acting like one of those charming rivals in a shoujo manga, but, well, is gay. Unlike many other gay portrayals, he's neither flamboyantly so nor gay for humor's sake.
Easily, the weakest point is Yuu Haruna, the main character. A whiny, shy kid, he gives me the impression that Haruto (MC of KNIM) gave me, and just doesn't improve. He's also obsessed with Twitter, too. It's really silly.
Right now, the manga is OK, but not great. It's not as good as KNIM when it started, but certainly not as bad as it ended up. I doubt that this manga will surpass Suzuka, easily Seo's best work.
its always the same all works of seo kouji are all the same the boys fall in love with her at the destined first meeting or if not theyll most likely be enemies first then eventually be together and live happily ever after that how all seo koujis works are ITS ALWAYS THE MAIN HEROINE THAT WINS!!! >_> its just too predictable that youll get bored
and of all seo koujis works he always puts a crossover of all of his works which are the only thing i like in his works
Sure, Fuuka tells us a self-contained story. But make no mistake, this is a SEQUEL. Reading entirely the Prequel not only is highly recommended, but it'll reveal the many flaws of the sequel.
If Seo Kouji, didn't want this to be compared with the prequel, he would have made a Brand New IP, Like Half & Half or Princess Lucia. And even then, it would be compared to his other works in terms of character connection (like Kimi no Iru Machi).
You can see it in terms of Story Telling that Kouji himself knows NOTHING of the topic at hand (Music), he's throwing all his experience in the Shounen Romance department, making his own music spin and hoping for the best.
The characters are carbon copy of classic manga/anime clichés. Not much to say really, It would be really good if i could, but i can't. Everything you'll see here, was already made and done before thousands of times in many different works in different medias (Manga, Light Novels, Anime, Visual Novels, you name it)
Overall i give this manga a 5. Mediocre. Not exactly bad, but not very good either. Fans of the genre will still like it of course.
Please stop comparing to suzuka. Yes it's the sequel, but it's not the same type.
yes she is suzuka asahina and yamato akitsuki's daughter....the story n character r a bit cliche but u can just read it if u got nothing better every week. not a manga that holds your interest to read chapter after chapter, but just a light read. Don't expect or look too deep into it.
always spoils the end of the manga in the case of SEO Kouji. Not to mention this is going to turn out to be another idol/singing manga going by the current turn of events. While usually the main characters in Kouji manga would have a redeeming quality or something good about them, this time the guy is a typical good for nothing shounen ridden cliche and if that wasn't enough he even whines about his stupidity on twitter. To add insult to injury the female lead punches/kicks/abuses the main character and yet the guy fell for her at first sight. As if all those cliches weren't enough we even have a famous singer who was the male protagonists childhood friend who still loves him but he's oblivious to it...lol. Amazingly all this crap has happened within just 11 chapters. Long story short, don't waste your time on this.
