I love this story and the FL is the exact kind of selfish, insecure but reluctantly helpful Main Character I can get behind. She's growing in her own painful, jerky way.
The artist is not...I'm not sure of the word...they are "good", I guess, but it's obvious that they have no talent. They can't convey the sociopathic comedic parts nor the morbid humor in a way that highlights the story. Even if their style improves in the future it doesn't have that "charisma" that truly talented artists have. That ability that even non-artists can identify.
It's not something learned, you either have this gift that resonates with others or you don't. Some folks may have the worst, amateur-ish, just plain technically bad art style but the flair with which they draw that style makes all the difference. That is talent. That is what separates a technically "good" artist who does NOT have that spark from a technically "bad" artist who does.
And that's tragic. This story deserves a talented artist who could have elevated its potential even if they're "bad" at drawing.
(I'm a proficient enough artist. I even make a living off of drawing traditional style portraits. I know I'm very good at what I do.
However, do I have that something that sparks other's wonder and imagination? That talent? No. I don't. It's a harsh reality but it's reality nonetheless.)
