The male lead wasn't my favorite

This is a beautiful, well written manga from the early 2000’s. There is a dark ambiance, with a focus on grief, loneliness, angst – so it’s not something I would recommend if you are looking for a light, fluffy read. I kept reading because the plot is interesting, the art is beautiful, and I loved the flower references that were sprinkled throughout the chapters.

The female lead, Chouko-chan is 18. She goes to live with the male lead, a distant relative, Kei (I think he would be considered a 2nd cousin 1x removed) who is a reclusive writer. The age gap is 12 years. This is a very slow burn, restrained romance – you aren’t going to get any super big confessions, or overtly lovey-dovey actions. What you will get a heaping dose of is angst, with the ML trying his hardest to keep the FL at a distance. “It’s maddening how much my heart hurts. I was a fool. I don’t have the right to hold her hand. My rusted hands could never raise flowers.” He pushes her away basically every chance he can get.

Overall, I did like the manga, but I probably wouldn’t read it again just due to my own triggers. I tried to stay with someone who was struggling with their mental health, but it ended up almost destroying me. It came down to me trying to save someone who didn’t want to be saved. That is what Chouko-chan is doing at this point. Best of luck to her.

Okay, I really wanted to like this one - reclusive writer with a dark past, cheery cute girl that helps him up. As someone who likes mystery/psychological shojo manga. It was right up my alley. I loved Chouko as a protagonist, but Kei?

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
He sends her a lot of confusing signs...he'll kiss here forcibly and without explanation and then disappear for days, making her worry sick. On the other hand, Chouko is always direct with her feelings and even in the end Kei doesn't explicitly tell her he loves her...it's as if he's just keeping her so he can feel better about himself.
And that Iona lady? As someone mentioned before, she likes to see Kei suffer? Because she LOVES him? Doesn't make sense.

While the premise of this manga was excellent, it could have been executed a LOT better. Points for Chouko's friends
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I REALLY wanted Chouko to end up with Yousuke in the end, he was nice & straightfoward with her, they were a good match. Loved it when he stood up to Kei for being such a jerk to her.
and Akiyama, who shined the whole way though. The poetry bit about the flowers was really nice but
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
there was too much focus on it (hence, the manga name) and it just took away all the buildup of the final chapter, in my opinion

An okay read if you have some time to kill, but don't really expect much beyond that.

That Was Worth My Time

This manga does a good job of depicting grief and sorrow, as well as the angst and trauma connected to these feelings. But it also shows a lot of love which doesn't get drowned by the darker emotions. That makes the book somewhat vibrant and gives it an edge above many others of the kind.
The art is fairly good, not perfect (that's why it get's a -0.5) and the heroine is drawn really cute, often fairly mature. It's a beautiful read both in text and picture.
I really enjoyed the heroine's personality, it spoke of a person who tries her best to be somebody you can enjoy living with, but the author didn't decide to just ignore her past and turn her into a shallow plot device. The same is the case with all main characters in this book, they all have meaning to the story and they don't feel like 2D cut-outs.
I would have really enjoyed a longer story though, another volume a few years down the line or something.

It kind of made me cry

I've been putting off reading this because I was worried about it being super dark (and the main couple not ending up together). I mean I do like dark manga, but I don't know. But I dont regret it.

I'm glad I read it at this point in my life, when I'm more mature and had longer to live. Various things happened in my life that left me feeling like Kei, so I really related to his own personal darkness. Hell, I'm even a writer too. I think the biggest thing I got from this is that I want to be able to write something that so perfectly conveys the darkness inside of me. Something that other people will read and feel the same utterly entrenching sorrow I do.

I also believe that this manga ia brilliant and breathtaking ( despite the shakey art). I dare anyone who feels some semblance of darkness to read it. It really is a beautiful and bittersweet piece of art.

A deep yet very sweet story!

This manga did not go how I thought it would. For starters, Chouko only remains in her shut-off state for a few pages before a time skip shows her being healed. Not a bad thing, just I thought it would go on for a bit longer. But whatever.

I didn't realise till after I was 8 chapters in, that this manga is classed as psychological. I tend to stay away from that genre for the very reason that it often makes ZERO sense to me or hits too close to home. But thank god, this is a light sort of psychological manga. To be honest, Kei is the reason it's termed as psychological. I don't get some of him. That depressed state of him . . . What? Just whatconfused?

But the story! It was exactly how I was hoping it would turn out (OK, definitely not EXACTLY, but I was routing for a older guy, younger girl, romance within family setting.). It was pure! So freaking pure! The romance scenes are . . . well, they don't happen often and are short but sooo sweet! And I thought that there might be some drama when Iori popped up! But what the hell happened there?!?! -_-
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She's some messed up woman who Akiyama is childhood friends with and has some sick desire to have Kei suffer?? Like what the heck is wrong with you????? And then it turns out she did this cause she's IN LOVE WITH HIM??? Excuse me, but that seriously came out of nowhere!!! No signs until Akiyama says it! Woman, go die!

I highly recommend people read this. You'll rarely come across such a pure and sweet story! Plus I guess you could say it's a good read for those who have just started or want to read psychological manga? Well, give it a try. Ignore what anyone says about it being boring. They have no idea what they're talking about. I can promise you that if you're not hooked by the 4th chapter, by the 8th chapter you will be! This is a manga which builds up! You sink slowly into it before you realise how much you've read! So read it and if you've tried reading 10 chapters and feel bored, well, at least you tried reading half. DON'T YOU DARE GIVE UP BY THE 4TH CHAPTER!!

It's so booooring. The whole first volume seemed to just be "OH, I/she used to super emo, but this guy helped me/her get over it. Oh, and now his eyes are really gentle too" uttered by pretty much every single character that has appeared so far. Bah!

A sort of sweet darkness...

What I like about this manga is that it doesn't pretends to be more than it is, the author didn't drag it, I even wanted more, and I'm not a fan of long mangas. But this here, it's quite a nice story, I liked the art and specially the protagonist's dark character. The mangaka sees this story to the end, she doesn't try to pull personalities changes, she just let the relationships between the character grow. I must say, now I have a weakness for dark writers <: You'll want more, believe me.

I enjoyed the dark parts but I feel like the story would have been better if it started from the point of her parents coming back and gave us a more in-depth look at Chouko's darkness during the time she spent in the house, rather than pieces in flash backs.

i love the poetic way the mangaka describe their descend to insanity and their hope of salvation. the translator also of course did a great job in interpreting the mangaka's meaning without losing the ephemeral quality.

however, i cannot say their words are full of wisdom and heartfelt emotion, sometimes i felt the lines are there for its own sake, the mangaka trying to draw out as much feelings out of us a possible and they can be repetitive in its insistence to be regard as 'deep and dark' akin to reading a 14 year old emo poetry.

however, i never try to find anything more than something that will play with my emotions, whether joy or sadness, so i like this manga as it is, however pretentious it may be. so please read this if you want to have a glimpse in the world of someone struggling with lifelong hate of oneself, or just want a good tragedy to sniffle to.
