Description

Great historical drama

Even thou it's still too early in the story to know where it will go, this has been great so far.
The start is probably it's weakest point, the MC is a regular guy looking for a job that falls asleep and awakens as the 2nd prince in a tumultuous era in the Joseon dynasty, that's it, no explanation whatsoever and we don't even know what major he graduated from, it's very lackluster.
Fortunately leaving that lame 1st chapter, the rest is very well done. It's historical and done seriously so the story is grounded and realistic (it seems this story doesn't follow recorded history but rather what many historians suspect actually happened, can't tell), the time is a good choice since the interplay there is between the Royal family, the Ministers and the learned, characters are well presented and also feel like breathing people rather than puppets and as far as I can tell they are well placed for the era (I don't know much about Korean history beyond of series and manhwas so take it with a pinch of salt, it looks coherent). Lastly, the MC is interesting enough, he isn't particularly great in any aspect but he fits the bill of a somewhat learned normal person thrown into this weird situation and trying to use his knowledge of history to try to make a better future, not for Korea, but for his new family.

Definitely recommended to people that like historical dramas or court intrigue stories.

Deep historical references and explorations

This is a light-hearted comedic approach to historical fiction. The author humanizes a major historical figure that has been labeled by history as a tyrant. I believe they do an amazing job helping the reader explore the history, fall in love with some of the major characters, and ultimately appreciate the complexity of imperfect humans beings put in positions of godhood. Especially wonderful for Westerners to reflect on during this age of Trump and other demagogues.

My biggest concern is the classification of the work. I don't see this is Shounen. I would classify it as Seinen. The characters and the story are fairly dense and the most meaningful acts, fairly subtle.

Overall
This is one of the best historical fictions I have encountered. I rarely reread things and I think I'll come back to this one!

Premise:

Modern-day Korean salaryman transmigrates into the body of the second prince of the medieval proto-Korean kingdom. However, he's the younger brother of the most infamous tyrant in the history of the kingdom. Furthermore, he finds himself already married to a pretty, devoted girl, and he already knows that if the history he learned in high school would come to pass, the king would be overthrown, and he would be separated from his wife due to politics. To avoid this, he sets out to temper his brother's mood swings and make sure he doesn't end up as a hated tyrant.

Setting:

The Joseon Kingdom was the predecessor of modern Korea. It's a mostly historical setting, though due to the MC's meddling, history goes off the rails, and a lot of technologies get introduced way early, such as soap and vaccination.

Characters:

We have our easy-going MC, who's trying his best to care for the mental health of his brother and king, yet just as often ends up accidentally encouraging him. Said king is an erratic young man suffering from mood swings, Freudian issues, and if left unchecked, he'd inevitably turn into a tyrant who'd get overthrown. Other main characters include the MC's devoted young wife, the king's scheming concubine, and a young female doctor who may or may not have a crush on the MC.

Plot:

MC transmigrates into the past as a prince, has to figure out how to stop his brother from going crazy and getting deposed, he "invents" a lot of modern technologies to help the economy and the healthcare of the nation, all the while a lot of political drama is brewing in the background.

Overall:

This is a really dense series that's hard to get into, and even though it tries its best to explain all the historical minutia, it's fairly difficult for a non-Korean reader to understand what's going on in its first couple of chapters. Once the reader overcomes this hurdle, the rest of the story basically boils down to three things:

The historical drama surrounding the king, kingdom-building, and the MC's antics with his easily embarrassed wife, his devoted servants, and him hanging out with his brother. At the end of the day, I'd recommend this to people already familiar with Korean history, willing to learn about it through its infodumps, or just generally interested in stories about political drama.

Man gets Waifu 11/10 "HIs Type"
IF brother goes Demon Mode on council, brother gets offed, man becomes king then Loses Waifu (for reasons)
Dedicates new life as rich prince to keeping brother from going demon mode.

Has two major issues. One, the corruption is really bad. Like at first you rooting for the protagonist, by 20 chapters in, you are are really just wanting to point out that it would probably be a better idea to instead prevent the uprising and/or the events that cause loss of waifu.

Two; a lot of issues seem to crop of from bad communication. Given the theme is "Lets talk down Demon Mode Elder Brother" there sure isn't much talking going on. But there are moments where the characters feel more real for their flaws, and having more than one characteristic. Not all arcs are the equal, as some are long and well fleshed out, and the more recent ones seem a little more like filler, or build up to more important things that will be brought back later, not bad, but not enjoyable right in a row. There have been a couple of fairly strong arcs, and the protagonist at least seems to remember why they are there often enough to keep the story flowing. The better arcs show enough of both perspectives that you can see both sides, and while you might nominally root for the protagonist. Demon Bro has a very compelling argument for just offing them and being done with it. A tentative 8/10

Cute and not heavy

If you come into this expecting gritty historical drama like Vinland Saga or Cesare - don't. This is light hearted romp of a guy just doing whatever to alter the past. If you read wiki about the king you would think it's better to just cut him into a thousand pieces but his portrayal here is very sympathetic. In the beginning you might think the author will stay true to history, but I guess it's hard to work on real demented personality and make you root for the protagonist. The MC also seems to be portrayed as an ignorant and indulgent person in the beginning, he doesn't understand that cows were never killed back in those days for food, they were only used for farming. I thought the author is going through that route and make MC realized he himself had become the type of nobility people hate and then he will repent, but author just drop that. Author goes for the 'golden finger' route where whatever MC touch will succeed and everything happen because of his luck.

I still enjoy the story, just that it's not what I hope for.
