Terrible characters

Great job by the scanlators, but a key aspect of the manga leaves a lot to be desired. It takes an extremely skilled storyteller to pull off the classic 'sociopath/gutless wonder pairing+ love at first rape' trope, and this mangaka sadly did not succeed. Despite what happens in the psycho character's past, in no way does his predicament excuse his behaviour and actions towards his weak and passive 'love interest' and everyone else he interacts with! I hated that character, and wished I could slap some sense and dignity into the other main character many times. The ending does not redeem either of them no matter how cute the mangaka is trying to make them appear.

Everything else about the manga is fine, but what use is that when you can't empathise with either of its main characters? In my opinion, interesting but likeable characters are 70% of what makes a manga great.

Also, by the end of the manga, we never find out if they are really halfbrothers (NOT stepbrothers) or not
.

I usually don't review manga that I don't like, but this was so bad haha

Long story short, the main character is blackmailed, raped, and then he magically falls in love with his rapist. Its extremely poorly written, and the art isn't that great either so I gave it a 1/10 rating.. I'm usually pretty generous when scoring so this is a first.. I've read some other manga by the same author and G senjou or whatever was pretty much the only enjoyable one.

I haven't read sth this bad for a long time. The plot is terrible, not only because it's a rape=love kind of story, but also because main characters don't behave or think like the adults, there's something wrong and definitely childish in their way of thinking and acting and you just can't easily ignore it. At some point I even thought it's a BL parody, but no, unfortunately it isn't.

For example - as a kid Kazuomi was pushed off of the stairs by Shuuji and now, as a grown up man he's looking for revenge for what happened 10 years ago. I mean really? because of a small shit you hold a grudge for 10 years? just how old are you? but that's not everything, because of that Kazuomi raped Shuji and took a naked picture of him. What's more he send that picture to his workplace. It's just... WTF? What kind of an adult would do sth like that? who would go that far? stop kidding me, it's too much of a poor excuse, it doesn't make any sense. But that's not everything. That Kazuomi wants to trick Shuji's family out of money so he asks Shuji for help! And he really thinks that Shuji knowing the truth about them not being brothers and after being raped and blackmailed WILL HELP HIM. WTF? are you serious? He wants him to go to DNA test in his place. What the hell is going on? And why Shuji still let him enter his house? Any normal adult would immediately close the doors before the rapist and call the police, also inform the family about con man to pevent sending money to that shitty guy. Moreover after all of this Kazuomi wants to make Shuji fall in love with him. I'm speechless. I mean I know it's just a fake story but this is just too much. Have some common sense!

Kazuomi is just evil, he's one cunning bastard, I couldn't stand his rotten personality and Shuji's indifference and silence, and in the end I wasn't able to enjoy the story. The art is pretty but can't compensate for such a weak plot. I don't like this yaoi.

The fuzzy conflict doesn't even support & give justice to the characters' personalities & circumstances.. I really dun understand what their problem is!! And in the end the circumstance wasn't cleared up..? it's confusing!!! But I love this mangaka, the artsyle, and the smex parts so...

This manga should be read casually XD;;

If you like sexual assault then go for it. The premise is completely stupid even for yaoi.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The rapist blackmails his victim by sexually assaulting him and taking a picture of it, all because he wanted to force the victim (who is his own stepbrother, by the way) to continue paying his school fees...because his own father isn't, anymore.

What the hell confused And we're supposed to root for him as the primary love interest? You couldn't just ASK the damn guyconfused

What a lazy, psychotic kid. The author clearly put a lot of thought into this backstory for this scenario when it doesn't even make sense. That is why this is bad instead of just another plotless yaoi.

This was a major waste of time!
The characters were unlikable (to say the least) and their motivations and reasoning was neither clear nor logical. The entirety of their relationship from the moment they met till the end were a pain to watch & in the end the romance felt forced & incomprehensible!
Obviously, this is just my personal opinion, but to be fair the art was pretty good, so I’ll give the 3 points for the art.

Funny how opinions on yaoi can differ so much. I just read three manga in a row, which this one being the third, and didn't think much of the other two - cute, but ultimately boring. This one, however, I loved. Then I went to read the reviews and they all contradicted my opinions, which the other two having 9s and 10s, and this one being dragged. Well...if you like fluff, of course this isn't for you. For me, however, it's exactly the type of thing I look for in manga.
The thing with Tsume to Toge is that you have to understand the fine line between hate and love, and how an obsession could make someone fall in love without realizing what they are actually feeling. That's may be a difficult concept, so it's not a light read. I also feel like previous reviewers didn't understand some of the story.

I'll break it down: Kazuoki gets pushed down the stairs by Shuuji. Kazuoki thought it was intentional, but Shuuji didn't actually mean to do it. Kazuoki spends the following 10 years obsessing over Shuuji and how he was going to get his revenge. He ultimately comes up with a plan that's beneficial to him, which is to take a compromising picture of Shuuji that he can then use to blackmail him and his family. Shuuji, on the other hand, has never forgotten the accident with Kazuoki, which led him to feel so guilty that he started blaming his father for having a lover and leading him to be out of control and causing that fall down the stairs, so he is basically estranged from his family when they meet.
As Kazuoki is acting out his plan, he starts sleeping with Shuuji and spending more time with him, so not only does he get to know him better, but his real, caring self also comes out at times. He doesn't understand his own feelings. He's been obsessing with Shuuji for ten years...looking at him from afar, admiring him and hating him for things he wish he had. He hasn't thought of anything else all that time. Naturally, he was in love, he just hadn't realized it. If you can't stop thinking about someone for 10 years, it's normal that it'll turn to love.
Shuuji falls in love too. Yes, there is dub-con, though I wouldn't say rape. That's also a very fine line in yaoi. Kazuoki does jerk him off against his will, but everything else since was consensual. He hides it under the blackmail excuse, but he actually lets Kazuoki into his life because of his guilt that he wants to atone for. Slowly and also because of his previous feelings, he starts noticing the little things Kazuoki does for him, his presence and absence... and starts falling in love to.

My favorite part is the realization of their feelings, because it's sooo angsty, and that's exactly what I search for (and rarely find, especially well done) in yaoi. In fact, I'd say the opposite of everyone's comments here: this was very skillfully done and I haven't read anything that good in a long time. The way Kazuoki's obsession with Shuuji slowly turns from hate to love is very subtle, yet detailed.

Shuuji is alright, not my favorite type of uke, but not the worst, either. Just normal. But Kazuoki is definitely my type of seme. Angry, pushy, frustrated, bad at expressing and understanding himself. Just perfect!
The art is also lovely, the sexy scenes are great. I would actually highly recommend this. The only reason I won't give it a 10 is because there could've been an extra chapter. I would love to have seen Kazuoki saying "I love you too" to Shuuji.

And as for Kazuoki being Shuuji's actual half-brother,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
at the end, when he's on the phone, he says he will pay back all the university fees, which implies the results of the DNA test were negative and, therefore, he is not part of the family, so he owes that money back to Shuuji's father. I agree that should've been made clearer by the mangaka.
