Yet again useless sequel

It's the same as genshiken "sequel" - completely unnecessary. It's more "darker", more "gritty", more gory and at what cost? Story. Now the previous ghouls have lost all characteristics and have become more psychotic, and humans have half ghouls with power level...While the prequel was quite nice, this is a mess.

BTW, It's a great series guys. Go for it without thinking twice. But, make sure to read Tokyo Ghoul before reading :Re or you'll not get the story.
Have fun reading ~

Still Waiting.........

Damn i feel like the same thing that happened to Attack on titan is happening to this manga. The author makes an amazing series that eventually starts becoming really popular but eventually lets that fame get to his head so to speak. The reason i say this is that both attack on Titans previous really long arc and this ENTIRE series so far feels like a filler and an attempt to extent the series much more; for more fame and money most likely. Now speaking only on this,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the past 38 chapters felt like nothing really advanced at all. The pacing is sooooo slow. I mean the main thing i and most want is the continuation of Kanekis story but we get what just feels like an alternate story. So far nothing real amazing has been revealed. The fight scenes are barely there and really short (except the serpent one) and Kaneki really has no advancement in the story. This feels like the Fullbring arc in Bleach or any anime that makes the Character lose their memories and or powers. So now we have read them doing random things until the finally get to the point that they already spent a ton of sufficient time getting to previously. It just feels like were all at a stand still until he gains his memories. And its not just him, everyone is at a stand still, the whole anteku crew is not doing anything really. it just feel like a long wait for the main stuff to happen and we're just constantly being teased only

Anyway i know this sounds sorta like a rant but i just feel like ive been waiting months for this sequel to start and uncover the mystories of the last as well as finish kanekis story with more resolution but i just s feel like im still waiting for the new "sequel" to start even now cause this story is not the same so far and nothings going to the point you wanted from the last one. yea stuff does happen but they all feel like side stories. Anyway this is just my impression of the series so far and i will delete or update this review once or if it gets better. Its not that bad right now but its just not at the point anyone wanted after the amazing first series. It just feels like an alternate story so far like i said

Update: Damn The recent chapters have been pretty awesome with a lot of developments. Its starting to feel as great as the prequel was. Ill probably update my entire review once later on.

An Unfocused Mess
by Darkresin

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous series. Reading it from when it first began being published up until it's conclusion. This sequel though... is as stated above: a complete mess. I'd given it about 40 chapters to settle into itself and find some direction but either by fault of the writer or the editor that hasn't happened. We're introduced to handfuls of new characters at the drop of the hat who are soon either killed or whisked away to not be mentioned for several more chapters and have us expect to remember their importance. None of the new characters are endearing or interesting. They're put into situations where they struggle and we're supposed to care about them... but they've given us nothing to go on. Haise/Kaneki's inner struggle is interesting but undeveloped (we have what - 2 of 40 chapters which deal with it). Even more egregious, however, is that there's no goal or antagonist. Something something Aogiri Tree something something is the most we're given. Previously we had a solid premise: Kaneki's struggle to come to terms with his nature as a ghoul, his relationships with the other ghouls, and the ever-present threat of the anti-ghoul investigators and indeed other ghouls. Now we have a huge unwieldy cast of forgettable characters, a protagonist that only shows up in about 1/3 of the chapters, and the gutting of the original and interesting cast.

Had this only been the first 10 chapters I would have given the author a by. But it's been something like 8-9 months since the beginning of serialization and the series is still piddling along - unfocused, uninteresting, and disappointing. I'll continue to read it in hopes that it gets better.. but to those of you looking to see if this is any good: just skip. It's not worth your time as it is in it's current form.

I liked the prequel. There was a decent build up and good story telling. Here is just a mess. 30 chapters just to confirm who the protagonist is. All of those annoying new characters - most of which without a reason for existence. It is just too random. I can't get hooked up on this!
update (60th chapter): I read that there is development so I read it up to date. God! That was frustrating >> All of my previous complains plus horrible pace and boring battles. I even started skipping at the last few chapters. From 6 to 4 >>

Mangaka isn't executing
by Yurichi

Rating: 10.0  / 10.0
Honestly, the mangaka isn't living up to the standard he created with the prequel.
Action - It's 31 chapters in and I have yet to see a coherent fight scene between two characters occur as of yet. What I mean by this is that there hasn't been a single fight scene in this manga so far, that hasn't cut away in the middle of the fight to something else for 7-8 pages. When you're running an avg. 19 page chapter, 8 pages of cut away completely ruins the pace of the fight. He's inserted so many characters, many of whom you don't care about or know anything about to even try caring, that when he does these cut aways you're just skimming pages to get back to the fight. And this cannot happen when you only have 19 pages to read.
Drama - A lot of characters are thrown at you throughout the series, this was the case with the prequel as well, but a number of central characters that were recently implemented are poorly executed. Nothing drives you to truly care about his underlings as none of them have any truly redeeming qualities. So when the mangaka tries to create drama by making those characters struggle, you just end up skimming pages again as you have no reason to care whether they live or die. Hell, all of them are relegated to 2 basic emotions based on their archetype, which is boring and unrealistic.
Horror/Mystery - It's hard to be frightened by characters and events when everything that is supposed to frighten or shock you is caused by someone who has completely lost their mind. Everything scary in this series is caused by someone who has completely lost it or never had it at all. That's interesting when you have one or two completely psychopathic characters but if everyone is completely broken the horror factor loses it's charm.
Pace - Look, don't read this right now. Wait for it to hit some 50-60 chapters so you're not waiting for fights to get cut off, or characters to not get built, or a character to not scare you every week. Plain and simple, the focus of this manga seems to no longer mainly focus on one character and the story he creates, but on several characters and how they contribute to one narrative. This would be great if the mangaka could simply make you care about them, but he has not executed that yet.

wasted potential

I had so much hope for this, but in the end re failed to rise beyond it's initial premise. This is basically TG all over again. The fact that it is titled "TOKYO GHOUL:re" pretty much sums it all, and I should know better than to hope for an expansive world. Which is a shame, I still think this 'ghoul' theme can be expanded so much more than what we have in TG:re. It could have easily been expanded by exploring ghoul's life beyond Tokyo (which was something that greatly disappoint me that the author choose not to), Kano definitely can be used better (instead his research is turned into something done for a reason that is almost totally out of character given the result of his research with mutated ghouls), and the way it ends is just unsatisfactory (which can be tracked to the failure to define the starting point of how "ghoul" came to be which was never properly explained in the series). The author seems to be focusing on twisting his characters as extremely as he can that he ignore other aspects which may greatly increase the value of the whole thing.

For me, :re is not a sequel. I will take it as another ghoul story, something akin to a TG side story.

Be patient

In the prequel we learned a lot about a certain side to Kaneki Ken and in the blink of an eye, we're standing on a different stage with its main player wearing a different mask. But it's still Kaneki. Initially it's hard to love him the same way but his raw personality shines brightly and that's the salvation in the rough road ahead to uncover truth and resolve.

The first chapters were both exciting and hard. Instead of getting important answers right away, new characters are shoved in our faces and the old ones we loved are missing, dead or are very slowly being reintroduced. This is probably the main reason for any poor first impressions but knowing the quality of the prequel, I think many good things could be coming due to the large amount of important characters shrouded in ambiguity. And of course by good I mean horribly tragic.

TLDR;
Read the Tokyo Kyushu first. Once you've read that, start this one equipped with patience. And have faith in Ishida Sui.

When I finished reading the prequel (Tokyo Ghoul), I was Really Disatissfied. How can a good manga like this end like That? I was ready to give it a bad score before I went to mangaupdates just to find out its sequel. I'm impressed now because how good the story building is. How the mangaka slowly put everything together to make more major plot. Something that I find in just a few manga.
***
But the sequel, tokyo ghoul:re, so far not on the same level as the prequel. Artworks changed, getting worse, and there isn't any significant progress with the story :/
