Excited to see the 'action' and 'supernatural' genre tags in conjunction with the GL demographic? So was I, but after reading this terrible excuse for a story, I highly recommend anyone who sees this comment to go read a slice-of-life manga featuring schoolgirl lesbians instead: at least you'll be saved from having to suffer through the utter waste of a good plot bunny that is Shinigami Alice.
This manga is disappointing on all fronts: the original concepts behind the story (the motives of the puppeteer who pulls all the shinigami's strings, Masaki's past, the dynamic between shinigami duos) are completely ignored, the plot is non-existent, the antagonists are caricatures of evil so dull and uninspired that they'd put anyone to sleep, and the two main characters are mindless automatons who have nothing on their minds except their mutual love... and considering the fact that they fell for each other within the first 5 pages with absolutely zero buildup in-between, it isn't even an interesting or touching love. The art is okay for the most part, but the action scenes are practically indecipherable.
The "character development" is so absurd that it's impossible to take anything these people do or say seriously: Masaki is supposed to have been deeply affected by a murder that happened right before her eyes when she was young, yet she invites a girl who killed several people in front of her into her home and her bed, without the slightest hesitation; Hinageshi has been a killer practically since birth and is heavily implied to have grown up with no nurturing or ordinary human contact whatsoever, yet the only thing about normal life she doesn't seem to understand is the concept of romance: she knows how to cook, clean, hold polite conversation, etc, etc., and she's only 13! Camellia is a terrible villain and such a typical yandere that it's sickening. (I did like why/how she died, though)
I wouldn't have minded if these bizarre behaviours were even remotely believable from a psychological standpoint or if they served the story (what little there was of it) in some way, but since that certainly wasn't the case...
Do not waste your time on this one. It's shallow, unbelievable and flawed to an unforgivable degree. If you want something a bit different from the norm, try Mugen no Minamo ni instead. It's hardly a masterpiece, but still leagues better than Shinigami Alice.
Well, it sure looks like Tokitsukaze Otoha`s work (the author of Ichiban Sukina Hito) - not only the art is too similar, but the authors names too.
But nevermind - this is is a good yuri oneshot, and it has such a rare for yuri oneshots thing as plot! 😉
If you like yuri you should read it.
