Going home for his grandfather's funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won't this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi's love life?

I feel like everyone's comments about the ending being a total train wreck is very extreme. It wasn't all that sudden in my opinion; in fact, I had already considered it a very possible scenario even when I had only just started reading. I would have also preferred it if the time skip didn't happen, because I feel that a lot of character development, which would've eased some the feeling that many readers are having about an abrupt turn of events, didn't have a chance to occur.

Like everyone else, I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the manga (pre-time skip). The time skip must have happened because of an external factor as its placement is quite sudden and awkward. I think that the ending was planned beforehand because there were several hints directing towards it, but it's just that its execution didn't go quite to plan.

Please don't let the comments discourage you from reading it. I definitely recommend it.

hmm where should i begin...
first i bumped into an anime preview by accident, got caught by gorgeous artwork and the imba-kawaii-ness of Rin chan, and then started watching the anime. It gave me a super big heartfelt fuzzy wuzzy feeling and i finished the 7 episodes in a flash. well after that i was engulfed by my cravings and i plowed through the 56 chapters in a flash.

anyways, like many, i agree that the story is pure, innocent and beautiful, until the time skip.

after that, i still had my hopes up for Dai + Kouki's mom and the 2 childhood friends together. what turns out instead was i guess somewhat of a complete surprise.

i understand how the outcome appears disturbing or sickening to some people. however, i think that the author is aiming to carefully explore something out of the norm, something largely considered as taboo in today's society. the thing i really liked is how every bit is unveiled slowly and the story is carefully and well paced. in a way,

i somehow anticipated that Rin's feelings may have turned out this way (no i'm not some disgusting pedophilic otaku). Rin is a quiet girl but even at the age of 6 she has at times the maturity of an adult. Also, even right from the beginning, Rin has never throughout regarded Daikichi as her father (though it's slightly hard to believe), but as somebody she lives with, cares of, and shelters from. She also refuses to take his surname and claims that daikichi is daikichi.

It seems that their warm, caring and loving feelings have matured over the years to something so complex that's beyond the what words can describe. perhaps you can say that it's a father-complex, perhaps it's gratitude for raising her, perhaps it's love - there's no longer a clear line that distinguishes all these..

anyhows, it was a very enjoyable read, and the story beautiful in its own ways. The series left me with a warm yet a little sour feeling which i still can't seem to explain.

ps: to single 30-yr old bachelors out there, please don't go adopt a 6-yr old girl after reading this series hoping for something to happen after some 10 years.

final remark: i can't wait for - usagi drop bangaihen - will it be another time skip (ugh.. 50 yr old with a 26 yr old + a child)? or will this wrap up the seemingly rushed ending?

I am a person who is thoroughly sick of high-school-kid love affairs. Usagi Drop gave no indication of being such a story, and I expected it to be a more mature, less funny version of one of my favourite manga; Yotsubato!. This quite piqued my interest, and I read the first 2 volumes with the utmost enthusiasm. Admittedly, it was stupid of me to not check the mangaka's favoured genres (which, on later inspection, turned out to be slice-of-life + romance) - something I usually do. But after reading a couple of comments on the series and noticing the 'time skip' category tag, I went ahead to the 5th volume - and was sorely disappointed to find my worst fears confirmed.

It would have been perfectly fine, of course, if the story had gone on to portray Daikichi's attempts to communicate with, and understand, his rapidly maturing adoptive daughter as she desires his company less and less. I would happily have accepted an intelligent take on learning to let go of your children and how he copes with Rin's quest to discover more about her real parents. Maybe those topics are brought up later on, but the fifth volume bored me too much. I am not fond enough of Rin to continue following her through the trials of her late teen years and her entanglements with her future boyfriend(?)

Therefore, despite having a very promising start, this title is destined to languish in my unfinished list.

Chapters 1-24: Cute Jousei. Chapter 25 on: bad school shoujo

The first part of the series is completely different from the later part. It starts out as a man raising an adopted little girl, and the man is interesting. But then there's a time-skip in chapter 25 and you no longer see hardly anything about that man--instead the story starts following the daughter once she's 17, as she has love triangles with characters I have no interest in. I never cared for that boy, and I was very sad that you no longer see hardly anything about her father.

Basically the beginning is fine to read, but the timeskip was a disjointed transition, and I can't recommend reading the story past the timeskip. In other words, understand that the "real" ending to this story is chapter 24 and what follows is a totally different story.

It's not my first time seeing a father daughter manga, Yotsubato, Hotman, and My Girl just to name a few. This being josei, well nothing coming to mind means I haven't read a josei that really made an impact, I just had to put it on my on hold list.

Surprisingly, despite all the cliche, I'm hooked, lined, and sinkered after the first chapter. If you like the series I mentioned above, you definitely must give it a try.

Some say that it's slow paced, I think it's well paced. A year was told in four volumes. Well, it doesn't really matter because there wasn't a boring moment.

One thing I really like about the art is how Rin's growth was depicted. It's almost like she grows with every chapter.

This whole story is meant to make you think about "What is a family?"

Like most reviewers I loved the the first part of this series; it was beautiful.

The second part of this series felt a little rushed. It disturbed my preconceived ideas and made me re-think and change my position about what constitutes a family. And once I had done that I really loved the ending - because not all love stories fit inside the narrow minded norm.

so I watched the anime and it was incredibly heartwarming, though it had its minor flaws. ah, how beautiful, a simple, pure story about a new father and daughter. so then, silly me, I decided to read the manga.
and the first thing that greeted me was (whoop de do!) a time skip. I should have stopped right there. rin wasn't even rin anymore. she wasn't the cute child who gets embarrassed when people carry her anymore, just some boring, super mature girl. what is even likable about her now? and the whole thing turned into a shoujo (and a really stupid one at that). not to mention the motivations behind the characters' actions were not plausible and sometimes plain idiotic. you just stop caring about any of the characters after a while. in fact, i implore you to stop caring this instant for your own benefit.
now as if that wasn't bad enough, the author decided to exacerbate the wound my heart was already nursing from grieving for my cute 6 year old rin by pulling through with that ending. why does rin love daikichi as anything but a father? where the heck did that come from? and the theme that was shoved in our face the entire time before this, the one about giving up and sacrificing to take proper care of your children, and knowing that it is totally worth it is RUINED. that theme needed fatherly love. now it is just, raising this child and sacrificing my job is totally worth it because i get to marry her now! derp! and the final joke the author left with us is having some of the last chapters be flashbacks of their father-daughter relationship. OK! i decided to make them husband and wife, time to remind my readers of the happy times they had when they were father and daughter LOL!! this totally makes sense!! they totally love each other as a husband and wife, but here is there father and daughter relationship too!
and thus this manga deserves its 5. Nice premise, initially lovable characters, pretty good execution in the first half, awful execution in the second half -- I would give it the neutral score of 5.5 but honestly, I kind of hated it by the end.

recommendations: just stick with the anime (which covers only the events before that god forsaken time skip), you can also try My Girl by Sahara Mizu, which has a similar premise and heart warming feelings and no terrible timeskips and endings.

It kind of funny

Back in 2011 i started reading the manga (in a library near my college) and i stopped before the time skip, i was thinking "anything after won't be so great so i can postpone it a little bit. Fast forward in 2014, i decided to finish it because of the fond memories i had of the manga, well...
It was great but i'm disappointed with the ending. The concussion is conflicting with the very reason why i started the book and why i loved the characters so much so...yeah, it's a kind of complicated feeling i have right now.

But when i think about it, i think their relationship at the end is unusual but it can work since they love each other, not the same kind of love but a couple doesn't always have to love each other the same way. The real problem with the end of Usagi drop is not the situation itself but the fact that it just happended so fast. Sure, there were hints but they were really subtle so it was really surprising. In the end, life and love can developpe in a lot of ways, i just wish the author would have prepared us better for this (but, hey! even Daikichi didn't see that one coming)

it just can't be helped that the mangaka ruined some of our expectations. Really. But I have foreseen it anyway, so it was no such big surprise to me. And I had to admit that I hated this kind of forced story (you know what I mean, it is about the relationship between the characters). I would have liked it more if it were executed more realistically. After all, it DID begin rather realistically, so the forced result really spoiled it. Shame

That being said, I think the mangaka did quite a good job making it a seinen slice of life story, cause I will curse any shoujo with this kind of theme. They make my skin crawls....incest and stuffs....
