Going home for his grandfather's funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? I don't understanded why so many reviews are dragging this down from its rightful place just because a few of their predictions didn't pan out and

they have extremely narrow minded views, and don't know how to keep from judging what they can't understand. They were great together, age gaps are quite common, and there was no danger of genetic mutations due to close relation.... so wtf is your problem... just cuz it isn't right for you means you have to insult lifestyle choices that people have made in rl. that's 20 times more offensive than any near incest love could be . If you ignore all the 3- ratings due to stupid reasons this story would have the 9+ avg rating it deserves. Fact is that its an amazing, and sweet romance. Which has a very large amount of character development. Along with very few, if any, plot holes, and a few suprising turnouts and controversial topics that leave a large impression. To be short its incredible, and deserves a rating even higher than it has atm.

btw if you want to be judgemental about the turnout and change the rating on it be my guest, just leave it at a few points. Being totally honest its some really screwed up stuff to drop the rating so far on a manga that obviously had tons of thought and effort poured into, simply because you disagree with one aspect of the story. So if it was a little gross to you drop a few points and a warning, that's all that's called for, don't drag the rating to 1 over some narrowminded bull.

case and point. observe LM1506's post above. "i liked the story all the way through for an average rating of 7.5, but because im narrow minded and cant accept anything outside of the norm. im going to disgrace this authors hard work by dropping the rating a full 5.5(over half the maximum possible) points even though i admit it was a great story till it conflicted with my all important morals which are themselves nothing but a misconception on family laws that were made for the sole reason of keeping people from producing offspring with genetic deficiencies, and not created to look down on someones love when there are no chances of issues due to close genetics"

First off, I really loved this series, it was so good. And the first part when he's taking care of her is cute and heart warming, like a father-daughter relationship and I was happy with the ending. That being said, the fist part is from the point of view of Daikichi, so of course he would only look at her as a daughter.

Think about it, the author had set up things that would point to this ending if they decided to go with it.

One of them being Rin saying that Daikichi is not her father, also Daikichi never really being able to end up with Kouki's mother, and also Rin not really being able to go for Kouki at all. When you think about it, the author obviously had this type of ending in mind, even if she didn't go with it.

Also, I believe that any type of love can be if you truly go for it. And I don't like it when those people bash it because they just don't think that it was a suitable ending. I get that you are entitled to your opinion on whether you liked or not, but does any one have to go on a hate rant about people who like it, because they hate a relationship? You don't like then ending then fine, but don't bash others who did, it just makes those ranting looking hateful and pathetic.

But anyway, if you're looking for a nice family type story, this is a definite read. And if you hate that

that the two main characters plan to marry at the end and have a family together even thought the man raised her as a daughter and the woman never really saw him as a father but rather a man who takes care of her in place of a parent then I suggest that you do like others say and stop after volume 4.

a cute story about a cute nuclear family. i rather at the end it goes all the way than chicken out like that, but i guess the squick factor is too much. i dont know why people are so worked up, this manga has a peaceful quality in it. probably the understated art.

Very good until end of Volume 4. Time warp really blah'd it up, and I was really disappointed with the actual finish. 9/10 for first half, 6/10 for second half, 2/10 for the finish.

Don't... Just don't.

What starts off as a cute, promising, heartwarming tale deteriorates RAPIDLY once this manga hits its final volumes - after the timeskip. So if you do plan on picking this up, just read up to there. Please. Save yourself the gross-out that comes once you close the last page of this strange, strange story.

Yes, the father-daughter relationship was endearing. Yes, it was an adorable read. Yes, that it had a very interesting overall concept.

But NO one in the right state of mind should ever read Usagi Drop after Volume 4. I don't even know what sort of crack the author was on when she wrote the second part of it. How on earth does a child fall in love with the man who was a perpetual father figure to her since she was 6? Just how?! & which sane father figure would even consider marrying the child he always saw as a daughter anyway?! I'm not even talking about the incestuous nature of the entirety of their sudden-romance. This isn't about being narrow-minded or close-minded anymore. This entire cop-out of an ending is not even psychologically possible! A child raised by any person regardless or whether or not they're mature, refusing to take their guardian's family name and have never regarded them as a father; has a nil chance of ever developing romantic feelings for their guardian. Because at the end of the day, your guardian treats you the way a parent would and as such you'd develop family love rather than romantic love.

Usagi Drop started out as a promising series but the minute the author decided to take a 180 and suddenly have her two leading characters have a romance, clearly she lost the point of her own story.

I wish I never checked out what happened in the manga.

Even though when i first started reading this manga, i never thought it will end that way, i still enjoyed it.
Yes, the best parts are the interactions as father and daughter, but if you read the volumes back to back, you can see a slight shift before the end....almost announcing how things will be different in the end. Taking the main characters personality into consideration, i can see how it would turn out as it did, rather than the expected pairing. Now if only we would be able to see the after, and how they deal with Daiki's family....

It's is an adorably cute manga about an average guy being thrown into the perils of parenthood. Especially funny if you're a parent yourself.

BUT, I highly, highly recommend stopping after the time skip. It will ruin everything you loved about the story and the high hopes you had for the ending. Trust me.

I watched anime, and it's definitely one of my favorites. It would be very nice, if they would made second season with alternate ending. Manga - 9.5 (best in father-daughter genre), later part - 5. Oh God, if it's possible, let them make it!

For some major letdown, I literally made an account JUST to comment on this manga which I was HEAD OVER HEELS in love with until about Vol.7 ... I'm actually such a fan of the first half that I can't bring myself NOT to recommend it even now. It was beautifully written, complex, bitter sweet at times, and wholly engaging. I can't recall the last time I read a manga that managed to pull at my emotions AND keep me on the edge of my seat ... but then ... there was the time skip headdesk and everything after that is just a jumbled cluster*uck of shock value and ploys to grab attention. Which this manga in no way needed to do.

I'm not even touching on the whole incestuous thing here because, well the managaka has lamely clarified that through some mystical loophole this is not incest in the end right? rolls eyes

Anyway, what I wanna talk about is the COMPLETE IMPLAUSIBILITY OF THIS ENDING EVER HAPPENING BASED ON THE HISTORY WE WERE PROVIDED WITH IN THE MANGA.

Point 1: The Daikichi whom I fell in love with for being the awesomeness that he is lol, is clearly (and has been since volume TWO) in love with Nitani-san (Kouki's mom). Who I might add quite clearly returns his feelings. But of course post timeskip and for reasons which are NEVER explained, mangaka marries her off to some random dude in order to accommodate the ridiculous ending. I could've swallowed the theory that they "sacrificed themselves" for Kouki and Rin ... but wait due to Rin's spoiled selfishness they were never an item so errr ... am I missing something here? Nitani-san can't marry Daikichi but she CAN marry some random dude?

Point 2: In every sense aside from blood, Rin is Daikichi's daughter ... Anyone reading this story can understand that within the first few chapters. The managaka made it so clear that he treasures and protects Rin as a parent with every ounce of his being ... and you're telling me this same hardworking, practical and protective father, turns around twelve years later and is suddenly able to view the seventeen year old CHILD he's raised in a sexual sense and MARRY HER? Are you F'N kidding me?

Point 3: Rin & Kouki ... this was so poorly done it was incredible, like watching a train wreck I swear. The managaka used the FLIMSIEST logic in the world to excuse how in the span of like a week Rin went from loving Kouki who she's had a crush on since they were SEVEN, to suddenly being steadfastly in love with Daikichi. Apparently for Kouki, despite being blatantly and almost RIDICULOUSLY devoted to Rin and telling her every five seconds that he likes her, having a nasty conniving ex-girlfriend is reason enough to just decide to never give him a chance.

You know there's just so much that doesn't add up, I'd be here all day listing them all ... And THAT'S my biggest problem with the ending. Not the quasi incestuousness, but the fact that I invested myself into nine VOLUMES, only to find that SIX of them (the BEST 6 btw) had absolutely nothing to do with where the story ended up. Sad, sad, SAD!
