This manga is an old one and a product of its time. If you presented this as a fresh manga today, I don't think any traditional Japanese publisher would take it.
The whole premise of the main story is that Wataru is no longer in love with Ryusei because his face changed as he grew up. That's it. Ryusei's face isn't cute anymore, so Wataru doesn't love him anymore. (Even though they've been bff's with mutual feelings since they were kids). That's the dumbest plot I've ever heard lol. The author tried to deepen the idea by having Wataru lament that he wanted to protect Ryusei but now Ryusei is the one claiming the protector role; as if something like that could be so binary in reality, especially between two grown-ass men who both do judo.
Overall it was a boring read; I didn't find the plot believable, relatable, or interesting.
