Description

From Viz:
Yuki Cross has no memory of her past prior to the moment she was saved from a vampire attack ten years ago. The ending...it was horrible!!! Everything just came to an abrupt end, all the previous chapters were just wasted. I think the author herself didn't know how to end it either, the mood was completely different than what I had thought this manga was about...the plot changed...I really hated the ending, just ruined the whole entire manga for me. I'm grateful for it being scanlated...but..wow, the author really disappointed me, I expected something better than this.

at first, this manga was so good! i first read it when it was being serialized in shojo beat. i was wowed by the art and i fell in love with zero. it was so good that i couldn't wait every month for one chapter, so i resorted to scans. but now, it sort of lost that spark and there's nothing anticipating. yuki lost her spunk, kaname is getting on my nerves with his possessiveness and how he treats yuki. dang, let her spread her wings a little! zero continues to be emo. i'll still keep reading, despite the complicated plot.

Confusing

This manga has a great plot and, even though I dropped the series, I still think it's good. However, the artwork is confusing as hell. It's gorgeous but everyone looks similar and there's so many charactes that by chapter 30 or so, I can't figure out who I'm looking at. Of course, that means I had a hard time following the story and I had to give up after awhile.

Heartwrenching and annoyingly long

The inner me is crying like a little child, without restraint.
The outta me is composed, I shed some tears.

Not because of the end events in itself but because of the missed time and the wasted time, the made promises and hopes that weren't fulfilled. Don't expect an easy mushy manga with a clean happy end.

I had to start reading chapter summaries at the vk wikia too from ch~~75 to ch~~88 or something - actually the Sara story arc. Partly because of terrible translation skills but also because of mixed fast switching story lines, character swaps (even completely unimportant ones with lame side stories), dynamics and bubbles and thoughts that were not always clear from whom they were. What a mess. That mentioned story arc ruined the manga quite a lot anyway.

Until after the middle of the manga, let's say till ch60 or so, I liked it. Even when it noticeable lost appeal after the first story arc with Yuki at the school. With introducing the next crazy Pureblood Sara is went downhill fast. Her entire storyline started to bore me quickly until it was annoying and bothersome that I couldn't be arsed anymore to read all her pages...

I knew she will die anyway so why bother to drag it out so much? The re-installation of the Night Class felt like a source for filling material.
The last 3-4 chapters were good again. Dramatic and tragic end. Bittersweet without the sweet.
Sometimes I like such ending (e.g. Code Geass style) mostly not. But here it was okay. I don't hate the end. The additional chapters 93.5 and 93.7 are kind of cute, touching and top off that particular ending.

Personally I would had hoped for a treatment and fresh energy for Kaname or Yuki also being turned into a human after the thousand years of waiting time. After all he was and remained her love and Kaname wouldn't have minded to spend more time with Yuki either.
Sacrificing her own life to turn slumbering Kaname into a human when she has two children is quite drastic. Poor Zero, he then has lost his love (and food source).

I didn't even mind who'd Yuki end up with as long as she firmly does so but when it looked like there is progress in the Kaname x Yuki department (after Kaname showed her his past... I totally had hope) he suddenly dropped her to fulfill his old agenda - what the...
Despite that about 10 chapters before all his worries were to lose Yuki beside him some day and 50 chapters before all his plotting was to hopefully end up with her.
I didn't like how it turned out with him. It was like those 10 years were a waste. He could have started his plan way sooner and left Yuki with Zero whom he built up to a great weapon and shield for her.

First part, he admitted near the end, was a wrong decision on his part. He had planed to start his old plan after Yuki was brought to Kaien Cross. But the idea of still being near her and the possibility to become even closer later let him change his mind.

At the end it was a dream for him, a short lasting dream of a 'what if...' with Yuki, when he woke himself up from it to follow his path that he dropped thousands of years ago. Alone.

Regarding the brother sister issue:

Purebloods are called like that because they have never intermingled with humans. As the nature of a Pureblood either seems to be not to care to care too much (in an aggressive manner) and since there weren't many of them to begin with it was not uncommon that they married within the close family. Like brother and sister.

Regarding Kaname in that issue:

Kaname is introduced as the son of Yuri and Haruka Kuran which is only half true. It is later revealed that he was in fact a dried up mummy in a coffin for thousands of years in slumber. That thing in the coffin was an ancestor of the Kuran clan, he was the ancestor. The first Kuran vampire at all from 10.000 years ago.
Someone wanted his power and to gain it he had to revive him just to devour him afterwards. The reviving worked but Kaname mummy was too strong and overcame his attacker. To avoid the severe blood thirst after that many years in slumber he turned himself into an innocent baby with sealed memory that leaked later when he was a larger child... he was rised by the siblings as their own child Kaname.

Most of thing have been already said, so I'll just add that if Hino-sensei wanted to please everyone, she should have done 2 or 3 endings: one with living happy with Kaname, one with dying with Kaname or dying in his place, and last one, Kaname dying and Zeki lovu lovu.
What shocked me the MOST in the last chapter was

Kaname saying "I want you to be together". WTF OMG JESUS CHRIST THIS IS SO UNNATURAL CUT THE CRAP WITH THE FANSERVICE PLEASE ! SO WHAT IF YUME OR ZEKI ARE PISSED, MAKE A FUCKING CHOICE, THE ENDING IS SO RIDICULOUS !

When I read it, it was written on the first page that the team was so pissed they weren't able to translate it so a One Piece team made the translation.

I was captivated at first..but now, the later chapters..well I simply cannot understand the plotline, its too confusing, the story is developing either too fast, or too slow, the scenes arent that well connected, everytime i read the newest chapter its as its a totaly new story, with occuring characters..i'm annoyed at this manga, it was really promising..so sad that it should get a 6 rating.

Starts like a Typical Shojo, Ending is Messed Up

I like how when I picked this up as a teen, it was a lot like Fruits Basket , but as it goes deeper into the volumes it becomes a tragedy lol. You have a mary-sue type girly girl who kinda is like a Tohru, but in a vampire setting. The headmaster is a typical shojo manga dad with an effeminate and silly personality and she has two love interests, one of which lives with her, kinda ya know, like Fruits Basket . But then everything goes to shit when you find out Zero is cursed and Kaname and Yuki are related.

Spoiler: and then everyone just dies lol. The headmaster, Zero etc.

I'm so disappointed with how everything turned out in the end. The beginning was so good, I really enjoyed it, even when the thing with Yuuki happened I really enjoyed the Yuuki/Kaname plot but everything else was complete bullshit. So bad.

Well, after following Vampire Knight since 2008--getting out of touch with it, forgetting about it, not wanting to continue my involvement with its slow-as-molasses-angsty-world-of-Vampire-Knight, I have finally finally finished it and can put it to rest in my complete list.

I don't really have any words of hatred for any of it. No complaints, no spite, no grudges, no harsh words to inflict upon fans or start up an unnecessary argument or arguments. Maybe it's because I'm tired. It's been a long arduous journey reading VK and I bet Matsuri Hino-san has had it rougher. For me, I probably view VK in this light because I was hiding from it for so long, not wanting to face the direction it was going--not feeling comfortable with its new developments. I don't really have much to say for the manga as a whole. I have forgotten my earlier--more strong feelings about the manga and its characters after running away from it and refusing to continue it until now.

MMM...I feel like it has certainly been a crazy ride from what I vaguely remember from it in the past. Reading the rest from where I had left off has been a ride too fast for me to feel much of anything but confusion and bits of a jumbled mess of bittersweet melancholy and many questions I don't know how to form.

I wish it didn't have to end to fast--not that I wanted it to span forever--just enough so things could be wrapped up neatly and explained in the way Matsuri-sensei probably couldn't with the way things were going (I heard that she had to end it because VK began to get low sales and she had no other choice). The ending was a thinker. I had trouble wrapping my mind around the idea of it. It was a bit much for me to handle and I was sad that at long last, it had ended like that. Still, it was probably the best she could do with what she had.

Beautiful, but unfulfilling

Though the plot gets convoluted along the way, I believe it does stay true to the mangaka's initial intentions. As for Yuki's identity

It is hinted back since the very beginning of the series, ie her first piece of memories. A five-year-old girl waking up in the snow with a strong vision of blood would only be either a vampire hunter or a vampire herself. But why is such young girl being chased in the middle of the snow? Her parents, vampires or hunters, logically will not bring their 5-year-old to whatever business they may have, be it blood-hunt or vampire-hunt, but most likely will leave her in the protection of home; thus, where she is being chased off to should be close to their house. Then again, she is literally in the middle of nowhere, which is not likely a home sweet home kind of place for hunters, since they tend to stay close to each other and close to the headquarters. Such remote and deserted place seems way more likely to be vampire's hideout. That's why, since the beginning, I always thought that Yuki was a vampire. Furthermore, along the way the author does drop many other hints, which I shall not present so that this post itself would not be too long and drag on like Vampire Knight itself.

And Kaname's string of reactions does seem to have a somewhat logical reasoning.

First he avenges Yuki and himself by killing off Rido, the mastermind and the murderer, by using many pawns such as Shizuka and Zero, and eliminating the council, whose corruption indirectly and inadvertently favored Rido's evil intentions. He then tries to re-establish order, but here again he is faced with Sara's intricate and cold-blooded plans (which are surprisingly alike to what happened ten thousand years ago) and other pureblood's playful murderous intent. Mindful of the past, he decides to go kill all purebloods then turns Yuki into a human. While following the plan, he realizes the limit that the furnace is reaching, so he puts the killing on an indefinite hold and sacrifices himself to finish her will and succeed 'her', the woman he loves years and years ago.

The ending is somewhat enjoyable for me. Everyone has a happy ending that stays true (to a certain extent) to each of their personality.

The gentle Yuki lives thousands of years with Zero until he turns to dust, then gives up herself so that her beloved Kaname could once live as a human away from the complicated world of vampires and hunters, enjoying sunshine and not needing to sacrifice himself for whatever and whoever. Since Yuki is described many times as similar to her mother, I kinda expect this outcome ever since I know what her mother did for her, but I just thought the person receiving this treatment would be Zero not Kaname. I kinda thought that ! she would fiercely die with Kaname to save the two broken Kaname and Zero, heal the world and so on, so I was honestly disappointed with this ending at first. I wanted this to end with a bang and lots of tears, and with Yuki being a much stronger heroine than she is now, but I guess a moderately good ending is better for the majority.

That being said, Vampire Knight cannot be more than a 7 for me. The characters started out intriguing, but in the end none of them had the depth that I was hoping for. The plot seems grand, but feels really half-hearted and not exactly convincing. The pace remains the same the whole time, which kills off excitement and makes the story somewhat suffocating, though I do understand that the author tries to achieve a melancholic and slow tone, which mirrors the hopelessness of the immortal creatures with no ending in their battle with time, and depicts the empty hatred of the humans and whatnot. The storytelling has some bright moments; some of the monologues, dialogues, and narrative are beautifully lyrical and truly touching. And applause for the artwork.
