Momonchi

Description

Okumoto Momo is a first year student at an art school living on her own although she's close to her family. She's studying art to follow in the footsteps of her father, who left his wife and three children (Momo is the youngest) some years back. One day her mother summons her and her siblings home to say that their father has resurfaced, sending divorce papers to their mother. It's a bit of a surprise, but he's been gone a long time and everyone is used to it.

Reference Character from Yesterday wo Utatte

Just to mention that a friend of the MC, Nakahara Natsuki appear in Yesterday wo Utatte (Sing Yesterday for me) about 2-3 chapter starting from chap 41. I think this happen after what happened with her in Yesterday wo Utatte (she still with her boyfriend). In Yesterday wo Utatte, they are still middle-school or high-school but in Momonchi they are graduated and take prep class to prepare for the uni or college exam. Too bad that they are broke-up though I hope that it's still temporary for a short time as she say that it's just for exam.

What happened?

I was happily settling into another fine Toume Kei manga. This one has the usual delicate touch, both of art and storytelling, plus two special things -- an absolutely adorable main character, and a top-notch slice-of-life vibe.

And suddenly it ended!

That ending was too abrupt to have been intended. It must have been canceled. This seems to happen to her works a lot. "Acony" comes to mind. I'm kind of pissed off. I took up reading manga to escape the almost invariable profit-oriented mishandling of all kinds of storytelling in the USA, and now I'm beginning to see it's probably the same in Japan: Set out to tell a sweet, low-key story of love, family, friendship, and youthful hope -- and it gets trashed for not giving enough cheap thrills!

Anyway, if the story as described above, and praised here by several reviewers appeals to you, check out what's there. It's truly sweet.

I've read it after a pretty busy day and it calmed me down. The pace of the story and the story itself is pretty warm and cozy. The art and characterization are good, so it was pretty easy to read and understand the manga.

Toume Kei does it again

I read this last night and was impressed. I'm already familiar with other works like Yesterday wo Uttate and Hour of the Mice for example, so i knew this was going to be good.
To me this is the definition of slice of life, realistic and simple.
If there was something i could point out as the weak spot it would have to be character development, i wanted to know more about Momo, and i know Toume's works are all about the characters, so that part came up short, good, but short.
The art is good and the characters enjoyable.
I recomend it.

I really enjoyed this manga...it's one of the best slice-of-life manga i've read in the past few years...I totally agree with every comment apart from the previous one from HuhWhat..you make it sound a bit bad and I have to disagree that nothing really happens in the end (although i'm not sure how do you mean that)...I've read your comment before reading the manga and it totally gave me the wrong impression...of course it wouldn't kill the mangaka to have produced more vols 😛 ...I wanted to see more of it but let's not be greedy..i'm still happy with the way it ended

i love the art...i love the way she draws faces..
nothing is out of the ordinary in this title but still it is so captivating for some reason...the characters are all so believable and well fleshed-out and I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogues and the inner monologues....it's all so interesting and it gave me the feeling that I was there and I was witnessing all this...I started it as a quick short read to get it out of the way but it totally captivated me and i cared so much about what was going on....probably because i liked the characters and because everything going on was realistic

i am now a toume kei fan...i'm going to read some more of her works

As per usual with a Kei Toume production, Momonchi is dominated by inner monologues and unnoticeable-yet-amiable characters. What this means for the average reader is a manga with no resolution or character development. What this means for the Kei Toume fan is another great reading experience with beautiful colored artworks, or an engrossing work that will no doubtedly occupy our minds with countless hours of fantasy wherein we undress the heroines from the shackles we call clothes.

I don’t really know how else to enjoy this series. Still, no matter the reason or method to your madness, it will prove to be worth the hour or two (maybe three) reading through this nonchalant piece of real fiction. It is a very light-hearted comedy, so don’t expect anything like incest or rape as you might expect from an average manga.

The plot follows the life of Momo Okamoto as she perseveres through her post-high school days attending an art prep school, following in the steps of her artist father. As you might guess, the low-life deadbeat left his family to pursue his art and Momo grew up hardly knowing him. Though that is the case, she does not hate him or harbor any resentment towards him. In fact, it proves to have quite the opposite effect as she feels closer to him now that he is gone. Let’s not point fingers, she’s not the brightest of heroines. If I had to give her an archetype, it’d be the ditzy short kid who has trouble staying awake for lessons. Of course she would pursue art, the lazy wench.

I am kidding. Probably. Possibly. Huh… what was this about again? Oh yes, the plot is about her dealings with love, or lack thereof. In the end, nothing really happens. I hope you enjoy that sort of irony as much as I do.

Toume Kei does it again

I've yet to come across a Toume Kei manga that isn't worth reading. Still, some are better than others and from what I've read so far Momonchi is near the top of my list. Stories like this (and Yesterday wo Utatte, another favorite Toume Kei manga of mine) really thrive on the strength of their characters. Sure, it lacks the drama and melancholy of some of her other series but it does a better job of creating characters that feel like real people than just about any manga I've ever read. After reading a couple chapters of this series you will become involved with the characters and care about them even though they may be leading relatively normal everyday lives.

If something light is what you seek...

I recommended that you read Hitsuji no Uta (Lament of the Lamb) first before taking up Momochi. It will come as a surprise as to how Toume Kei could produce such dark atmosphere in one manga and such light-hearted dramas in another.

Toume is a great author in just about every aspect- her art, although admittedly somewhat cold to some, is technically interesting, her storytelling ability is amazing, and her characters are virtually always consistent.

Momonchi (and keep in mind that I am a bit biased here- I did the proofreading) is a unique attempt for her- something lighthearted instead of melancholy, but still filled with the drama and tension that makes all her other works so interesting. With both an interesting lead and a great supporting cast, the characters are probably Momo's best aspect. I emplore fans of slice of life works to give this a shot.
