Description

Decent and surprisingly relatable

I was very conflicted about this manga after finishing it. Don’t think it’s the kind that will appeal to everyone. Both main leads are flawed (you will find yourself disagreeing with a lot of things they do) and immature. The main leads are exaggerated extremes at the two ends of opposite personalities. The relationship also starts very early in the manga so if you’re looking for a slow burn crush to relationship manga, don’t read this one.

Stepping back and looking at this as a story of two young and immature teenagers trying to make a relationship work. I feel like the manga did a great job touching on almost all the beats that come with growing up together in a relationship. Most shoujo I’ve read end with the kiss, but this one starts with a kiss and delves into the struggles in a relationship after it begins. I like that given this, the story explores more mature themes of attraction without crossing a line. I’ve experienced growing up in a relationship and I think Ookami Shoujo did well conveying what it can be like.

Despite what praise I can give this manga, there were some chapters that were hard to get through. There was one chapter where

Erika’s younger cousin develops a crush on Kyouya. While Erika doesn’t seem to take it very seriously, there are a few points in the chapter where she seems like... she is genuinely bothered by it and doesn’t trust that Kyouya wouldn’t leave her for a (what I assume to be) 13 year old??? I think the chapter that bothered me the most was the one where Erika gains 10lbs and Kyouya spends most of it calling her a fat pig. And the running joke seems to be that she is having trouble starving herself while being tempted by food. Her health deteriorates and it’s treated like a gag. I do not think a relationship like this would function in real life nor would I condone one like this in real life, given how actually cruel to her that Kyouya is for most of their written relationship.

One thing that also bothered me is that

we never really are told why Kyouya even likes Erika to begin with. I got the sense that he liked her because she was one of the first girls who didn’t hide her intentions from him, whereas most of the girls who wanted to date him just pretended to like him for superficial reasons without voicing them, Erika was the first to straight tell him she wanted to fake date for superficial reasons without lying or hiding it. I can’t recall if they ever have him give a reason, and whenever he’s asked, he just kind of thinks about her and smiles without an answer.

I see Erika getting a lot of hate for being clingy and annoying, but I think it’s important to remember she’s a teenager and I think the author did well giving her genuine flaws that she works on as the series progresses. She starts out taking a mile whenever Kyouya gives her an inch, but learns to bring it down a notch. It is hard to watch at times, yes. Teenagers, especially those in their first real relationships, are going to do a lot of cringey things. Once you get older, look back on your teenage years, even from your early 20s, and you’ll probably cringe too. You will change a lot very quickly in these years. I’m 22 and I was still doing dumb stuff at 21, probably going to feel the same next year. Erika learns to come down to Kyouya’s level and Kyouya works to come up to Erika’s level until they find their happy middles. This is a constant theme in the manga.

Overall, if you like a distant (and somewhat mean) male lead, don't mind that the relationship establishes early, and don't mind the female lead embarrassing herself a lot, I think this is a decent read. If you can look beyond the surface and read into the themes of growing up, I think you will find it a lot more enjoyable.

So another manga has been completed. Much happened in those chapters and at the end,

they were married with a daughter. Both were still in love and cute together, always making me smile. Tho i didnt like that San-chan didnt end up with Takeru AND that Nozomi didnt had any wife. But still i was happy to see that they meet up even when they grew up. Kyouya as adult was also hot - and Erika still cute. Those two <3

As always im sad that another good manga is finished (i watched the anime and live action movie too ofc), i wish it would have been a bit longer, coz i loved them as adults~ anyway im looking forward to more nice manga from this mangaka.

this is your typical shoujo manga, as in [stupid] normal/avarage girl who fell in love with the prince of the school. plus you add the unrequited love that turns requited. bull's eye. very. shoujo. cliche. plot.

and the reason why i said that it's "not really cliche" is because this manga is not focused on the dramatic side of the relationship. rather, it's your typical shoujo but presented in a comedic way. it's about the ups and downs of a relationship that does not dwell on drama. probably there is, but instead of feeling the angst, you will just brush it off with a laugh which is why i really like this manga 🙂

As someone else said, from the cover I was also hoping the heroine would have some backbone to her. But she is just M beyond while also being a hypocrite over it. She gets mad he is mean to her when she is all shallow to keep her so-called friends? I felt really bad for San-chan, the one decent character.
I suppose I like Kyouya, even if he is mean. All because I feel like she deserves it for being all so stupid with no real character development. Please, get some. Stop obsessing over what being a couple should be like and stop being so horribly shallow, Erika. And all those unnecessary things she does. Sigh.

Either way, it's not that bad. It's just another generic shoujo. If you like the cliché ones, you will like this. At the very least, the art is good. And San-chan and Takeru are good. ... ... ... They should meet and hook up and then it should center on them and then it wouldn't be so bad anymore. Nvm, not happening.

I assure you to keep reading till the recent chapter. I know, at first you'll get annoyed with main girl behaviour or maybe with the guy too. The girl, well, she's just thick-headed, optimist, and lively (a bit stupid but it's okay right being not perfect), but she isn't a weak girl. Yeah, she does cry but not a lot, even in a positive way. I mean, she's reflected of what she does and she cried but then she'll improve/fix her behavior (not much, though).
About the guy, kyouya, he's a tsundere. You'll find cute and manly at the same time.

he's an ex-playboy, so it's natural for him to be a jerk. But he changed a lot after dating Erika. Basically, Erika is his saviour. There's a saying that a playboy will make a good husband, right?

Cute manga, nothing special

This story is about an average girl mistakenly ending up being a "dog" to the school's popular guy because of her pride of not admitting that she is not in the same "dating level" as her friends.

Sometimes you can totally tell the guy has a thing for the girl - but the girl just needs that piece of confirmation so badly because he really treats her like poop at times, yknow... but he never tells her he likes her because he's a shy guy who is proud about his emotions. So far the story has been pretty average, just your everyday occurrence at school ... hopefully the later chapters introduce a love-rival so that Kyouya can wake up and realize that the girl can't wait for him forever.

All shoujo's are cliche! There! I said it!!

What separates good ones from bad ones is not the plot though. It's the execution.
Witty dialogue, poignant scenes, great art , good pacing, and amazing fun is what makes this manga great.

The heroine will always be a silly cry baby but I personally love her because she's sincere. The love interest will always be cold but it's okay because it puts drama and comedy into the story. What else do you expect from a mainstream shoujo anyways?

So stop analyzing and criticizing an already broken genre and just enjoy! Smile at the sugary sweet moments and let go of that cynicism!! 🙂

This manga is the kind that you either end up liking or not. I ended up not exactly hating it but not liking it either.

I jumped onto reading this because the art looked nice and the premise(though it's been done before) might turn out interesting with the mangaka's creativity. It's pretty average, I guess.

Our female lead, wanting to belong among her peers who've all had boy-experience, lies up an imaginary boyfriend(with the aid of her bestfriend) to impress the 'it' girls (who, amusingly, the hero comments to himself as the 'bitch duo').

Pressured into showing evidence of her boyfriend, she takes a picture of a hot guy she happens to pass by. Things happen, he blackmails her into being his dog, yadda yadda, he helps her pull off the fake relationship. So far, the story goes like that.

There's bullying of the heroine, an a**hole of a hero, a he's-so-mean-but-oh-noes-I-love-him heroine, and so on...the usual shoujo stuff.

I could have looked past it all if only it was written better. I really liked the art and really tried liking the characters (which I did around the beginning) but this just turns out pretty 'meh' for me. I'll come back if the plot gets interesting, like, Oh I dunno, some hero groveling maybe?

I'm a huge fan of hero groveling (because he's freaking lucky to have some girl, albeit a pretty wimpy girl, put up with his shit) and I love seeing it in stories where there's such a huge imbalance in the dynamics of the relationship. I hope it happens here and soon because I'm on the edge of dropping this.

As the reviewer below me said, I too would like to see some backbone from the heroine. This story can still be saved and maybe the comments in the future can read "oh, it was bad in the start but turns around around chapter bleep". Hopefully.

It's the "typical shoujo manga" but you read it anyway and anticipating for the updates! It's a fun read. It doesn't go near the word "amazing" but I think shoujo manga isn't all about amazing to begin with. I love reading through the development of their relationship. There were some awesome cute factors involved which makes me happy and the main characters didn't get on my nerves :3 (Erika's two annoying "friends" doesn't count) I hope this manga ends well.

My only concern after reading up to chapter 9 is that this shouldn't go for too long or it'll get boring with its repetitive formula (fight-tension-made up-cute factors). Manga is at its best when it's not overdone! I hope this manga falls into that category 🙂

Honestly, this one isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea for reasons that I totally understand, but I have reread this one so many times and still love it, and here’s why.

We start off meeting Kyouya, and he is harsh and mean towards Erika, he claims to dislike people and only like dogs (which honestly.. can’t blame him for that one.) so he agrees to be erikas fake boyfriend if she’ll be his “dog”.

Kind of seems like a a-hole, doesn’t he? Absolutely. But his attitude slightly changes towards Erika and she falls fast and hard, in a typical shoujo kind of way.

What I like about it though is how we watch their relationship develop, and how everyone who was in Kyouyas life before Erika starts to see a softer side to him. Through different events in the manga you start to see how he truly loves her and the way they try to meet each other in the middle.

I also love the epilogue chapters where we get to see where they end up in life. The very last moments of the last chapter where kyouya is thinking about how everything good he has in his life is because of his relationship with Erika. Also the scenes where him and Erika were playing with their daughter was so sweet :,)
