Description
Forced to enroll in school one month late after recovering from a serious illness, Harutaro is doing his best to remain optimistic about the entire situation. The other students are working hard to make Haru feel welcome--especially his chubby, loveable pal, Shota. However, Kai Majima, president of the Manga Club and all-around hard case, seems to be the one person intent on making Harutaro’s school life a living nightmare.

shige: "why can you write the harder kanji 'joku' in the word 'kutsujoku' (1), but not the easier first kanji 'kutsu'?" majima: "when it's in 'ryoujoku' (2) i can write the whole word." (1) kutsujoku means 'disgrace, humiliation', (2) ryoujoku means 'violation, rape', and majima is a moe-obsessed otaku. this manga has me laughing so hard. i'm only in the first volume, so i won't rate it yet, but i am definitely ordering the other 3 volumes. the DMP translation seems ok; they actually have some translation notes, and are keeping lots of japanese flavour by retaining certain expressions.

Well, after reading this series I cannot stop thinking about the character Majima, the "ultimate otaku"...=.= Through many small little things, Majima is considered to be a insensitive person who obliviously annoys other people around him. He always want others to think the same way as he does and not willing to get along with others. Majima once admits "I have no problem with ignoring people but I can't stand being ignored myself!!!"
Umh,... the only hobby of Majima is manga, games and anime. He is an ultimate otaku after all bigrazz . Because of his behaviours, he is considered as "creepy" at school but he is absolutely not creepy looking at all biggrin . He is rather handsome when he is not wearing glass. (The only time he smile and remove his glasses in the manga is during the school festival ^^)
I have to admit that I do not hate Majima at all because I find myself really was a female version of Majima =.= when I was in high school (unfortunately sad ) Well at least my grades are not as bad as his bigrazz somehow. And well, I'm not really interested in student x teacher romance >"<, it's kinda perverted. Saito-sensei is interesting character; look like a flaming gay man, a woman who enjoy being treated badly by her lovers, a teacher who has affair with a married-teacher (who used to be her teacher ^^) and her student at the same time biggrin . No more words smile

This author can take cliches (i.e. school festival) and make it wonderful.
The people have distinctive personalities.
Plus, the laughter! I raised many eyebrows with the loud laughter with the "No tentacles" line and it was one of many.

This is lovely. I think Yoshinaga sensei must be incapable of writing a bad story. IMO, everyone from teens up should read this series at least once. While waiting impatiently for volume 4 to be released, I'm going to convince my local library to buy a set (^_^)
DMP has done a good job with the translation. All honorifics are retained as far as I can tell, and cultural notes have been added in the margins for some of the jokes and puns that simply couldn't be translated. Fingers crossed, DMP gives us a colour page or two for vol.4 *wish*
