Description

Having no experience in romance, the vibrant Ninako curiously explores the meaning of what "love" really is, and is surprised to feel a colorful range of emotions as she grows closer to the school heartthrob, the quiet yet gentle Ren, who also happens to be involved in a longtime relationship. With every intention of keeping her head held high, Ninako prepares to face the mental pain of this one-sided love that she had allowed to take root, facing a series of trials that would either contribute to her growth as a headstrong woman, or break her as it did with other girls.

However, is this really a one-sided love? Or had something been silently sown in the most hidden part of Ren's heart?

Volume 2 contains the side story Another Light about how Ren and Mayuka first met.

Volume 5 contains the side story Unfinished Map about Ren and Andou's friendship in middle school.

Volume 6 contains the oneshot Colourless Dreamer, which is unrelated to the main storyline.

Volume 7 contains the side story Wishing for Yesterday about Yuu and Sayuri's past.

Volume 10 contains a side story about Manabu's love.

Strobe edge is incredibly dull. The only character in this manga that is even remotely interesting is Andou. Ren is the typical, popular, cold male lead, and Ninako is nothing more than an overly optimistic, naive girl that of course falls head over heels in love with the most boring, antisocial, insignificant guy in her school. This entire manga is just about Ninako chasing after a guy that really is not all that special. Ninako completely friend zones the guys that have always cared for her from the beginning (i.e. Andou and Daiki) and instead pines after some guy that already has a girlfriend. Even though she's not a terrible character, her unrequited love and naive way of thinking is extremely irritating. She needs to get over Ren, who has about as much character and personality as a rock, and start to appreciate what she already has. If you want to read a very generic, boring, shoujo manga, then read Strobe Edge, but don't expect much.

Honestly I fear that young impressionable minds will think this is a healthy way to fall in love with someone. Rejection is part of the game, so get over it! It's unhealthy to obsess over someone who is taken and not interested. Know what that's called? A STALKER!

At first I thought it was kinda cute and fluffy, but then it quickly got on my nerves. First it was the lead girl and then it was the story in general.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but I had to vent about how much I hate this manga. 😛

This might sound weird but I love this manga not because of the main characters but because of Andou and Mayuka. I really admire them. They're both selfless, and were willing to sacrifice their own happiness for the person they love, even if it's to see them be with someone else. Very admirable, isn't it? Main characters are meh. I leave the passionate comments about them to other reviewers. =P

I actually dropped it after reading two volumes. The plot is rather typical for the genre and almost completely predictable, despite the claims otherwise.

I do not recommend this for anyone around or above my age (I'm 16) or anyone who's looking for a serious read. However, I do recommend this for a younger audience with a more idealistic approach to life.

In all, I rather liked Andou, rather disliked Ren, felt bad for Ren's first girlfriend, and ended up being annoyed with Ninako.

While Ninako does have some character development, it's not particularly good character development. She doesn't really learn anything useful, except maybe that love doesn't always work out, in the first two volumes (but that doesn't really count, because she ends up getting the guy) and becomes progressively more annoying as the chapters proceed.
Although Ren had an actual personality, he was a boring love interest -- a Marty Stu by any other name is just as irritating.
Andou and Ren's first girlfriend were actually very enjoyable characters. The former, because of his flaws and the latter, because of her relatable insecurities.

ok this is coming from a 19 year old girl, who absolutely hates shoujo mangas. However, just read 10 volumes straight through. And oddly enough, I rate it 10/10!

I think most people can agree with me that 90% of shoujo mangas are as follows:

no character development
a doormat as the heroine (y'know => cry baby, selfish, and stupid.. no not naive, JUST PLAIN STUPID)
an all-knowing/all-doing knight in shining armor as her love interest
one bitchy girl who hates the heroine and tries all she can to make her life miserable
a bunch of other characters who are just for display
and finally an insanely predictable plot, to the point of stupidity.

However, that's definitely not the case with this manga. IT IS ANYTHING BUT PREDICTABLE TRUST ME.

I put off reading this a few times because, (well first because it's shoujo) and also because the description to me sounded really unappealing but after reading many gleaming comments I gave it a go, and boy am I glad I did!

The only thing you will not find in this manga is pure evil characters, which I enjoy because I don't believe anyone is "pure evil". Even though some might disagree and say no some characters are bad such as Mao. NO, even though they might seem like they are doing bad things, they still had good intention behind them (in their point of view).

Strobe Edge is full of compelling characters that you really fall in love with and revisit again and again, it doesn't just end with they got together and lived happily ever after, they feel like real relationships with all the romance, lost loves, breakups and reconciliations.One of the things I loved is that the mangaka almost didn't let any story without continuation. It was all tied up beautifully. It has a very well thought out interlinked plot that keeps you reading like an addicted (and trust me, it wont take you long before you get hooked!).

Last but certainly not least is the art, which is honestly the first thing I look for in a manga, followed but plot and characters. In this case I don't think I need to say much because the cover says it all. YES the heroine might look like a child sometimes, but it's cute at least. and also I noticed that in some mangas when the mangaka tries to make the characters look beautiful they end up all looking exactly the same except for the hair style. But you don't have to worry about that in this manga. Every character have their own features that distinguish them from others. AND they still manage to look simply ADORABLE! (Ren, Daiki, Ando, Ga-chan, Yū, AND ALL THE GIRLS) absolutely love them all.

WARNING: Ren is so CUTE! you'll almost feel like a pervert!!

Seriously. Read it. Enjoy it. Love it. Reread it. Adore it.

(because if you're not impressed with this, I honestly don't know what would impress you!)

All right, I'll be honest. From the moment I read the summary of the manga, I decided immediately not to even look at it. Why? Because the summary reads "First love," and to be honest, it kind of makes my stomach churn.

BUT IN THE END I JUST COULDN'T STAY AWAY!!!

The manga has the cliche's I love, but also hate. I initially thought that the heroine would be someone I hate, but she isn't! She's just the opposite of that. In fact, I'm cheering for her, but at the same time I don't want to.

As I read the manga, I felt my heart aching for just about every character. Their feelings are somewhat relatable and make you think about things you've never really given much thought to.

If you're put off by the summary, then don't be. This manga should serioiusly be given a chance because my heart won't stop aching after reading up to the latest chapter.

I never seen such manga that takes unrequited love to the extreme and the writer of this story conveniently write in a way that Ren gets to have a relationship with the heroine, it thought contrieved how Ren likes Ninako more then girlfriend, given the fact he hardly knew the girl. Just a series that relies on making forced solution which leads the writing to feel unnatural.
I admit it had potential talking about unrequited love. But another unnatural writing is when ninako rejects ren not to hurt Takumi feelings when she doesn't even like Takumi so unrealistic and it just unnecessarily prolonged the series

Also the side characters are superfluous with them having weak roles and also giving terrible love advice such as stealing a boyfriend when he had a girlfriend which enrages quite a bit and how you confess to someone when he has girlfriend which he is currently happy with. "If you love someone set them free" not selfishly think about your own happiness but the one you love's happiness.

Although Daiki and sayuri subplot felt like it was very well written and genuine in my opinion

Better shojo manga in my opinion would be my little monster, Taiyou no Ie and Orange

he changed heart once

I agree with you all that sometimes feeling change, and breakups happen in reality. But because of that, we must admit one thing that if Ren did change heart once when he began to have feeling for Ninako, so what guarantee that he won't change heart again? Sure he seems so much in love with Ninako now, but he used to have a beautiful love with Mayuka too and please don't say they didn't love each other or it's because of her job. They did love each other, but he has a change of heart. So Ren and Ninako seem so much in love now, but what makes sure that in the future he wouldn't fall for someone else. Same goes with Ninako.
I think while it's good that this manga teaches us that sometimes relationship doesn't last, and while you love someone, you can still fall for another. But after ch.19,

where Ren broke up with his girlfriend , it went downhill, returns to being a cliche romance, with a no-good heroine and one girl/many guys relationship.
And yup, from what portrayed, I don't believe Ren is a loyal type. He changed heart once, he can change it again.
P/s: I would proably rate 10 of there is a situation where after they got together, Ren has shaky feeling for another girl and I could see how Ninako deal with this, rather than just showing their puppy love.
Pp/s: I really like Mayuka, what she did was couragous and kind. She would totally be my type of heroine.

If you ran out of other manga to read this one is worth giving a shot. The characters were interesting, and its visually appealing. It was a very standard shoujo manga, and relative to other manga that I've read I would say its slightly above average. I personally will not be reading this a second time because it was pretty typical.

My main complaints:
The protagonist unrealistically fell in love at first sight..and the entire work is focused on her frustration with being in love with a guy who already has a girlfriend. Plus there were plenty of other decent characters in the series that she could have fallen in love with (without it being unrealistic). It would have been a nice twist to see her develop a relationship with Andou.
Also, some people seem to think that Ninako is innocent and all, but she did confess to Ren while knowing that he was in a relationship. Regardless of whether he was in love with his girlfriend or not, she should have been serious about repressing her feelings.

An eye-opening series

As a previous comment said, this series really made me re-think my opinion on relationship where one person leaves to be with another person. I really appreciated the author's efforts to explore this territory that is seldom explored in shojo manga. Real relationships are not black & white, and people DO in fact change - for better or worse.

Many people have commented complaining about Ninako's "interference" in what seemed to be a perfectly fine relationship. But honestly, 1) I don't feel Ninako ever interfered in their relationship and 2) It didn't seem like their relationship was that strong in the first place. Ninako never actively pursues Ren...she states multiple times she just wants to stay friends and respects Ren's love for Mayuka. She fell in love before she knew he had a girlfriend, and once those feelings start they can be difficult to dispel. She continues to be herself and ultimately

that is what makes Ren fall in love with her. It was not through any conscious effort of her own . As for my second point, ! the author makes it very apparent that the Ren with Ninako is much more animated and excited than the Ren with Mayuka. While they might've had a normal, healthy relationship, it is obvious to me that he was happier and more true to himself with Ninako, which is FINE. I mean, he met Mayuka when he was in like 8th grade. People are almost guaranteed to change between 8th grade and high school. Mayuka realized this (along with the realization that she loved her job more than Ren) and did the adult thing and ended it. In my opinion, both of them were holding onto the relationship for so long because it was comfortable and familiar. I'm not saying they didn't love each other at the beginning, but somewhere along the road they both changed - a very normal and human thing to do.

So while many people may complain about these things, I actually think that's what makes the manga really great. And I really like Ninako as well. She handled somethings poorly and others great, but that's refreshingly realistic. The important thing is is that her heart always seemed to be in the right place and she always stayed true to her feelings. The only reason I'm not giving this a 10 is because some portions (like Daiki's super abrupt love interest switch and everything to do with Andou) were annoying and cliched. But over all I'd say this is a really great read.
