Sundome

Description

The "Roman Club", a school group interested in the occult, to which he's practically enslaved, has become boring for one Hideo Aiba. In fact, he finds his entire existence pretty tiresome until, one day, when a girl named Kurumi Sahana shows up and wants to join up. When the two are left alone in the club classroom, Kurumi makes a special "request" of Hideo, which makes him (understandably) freak out. Though he doesn't know what to think, one thing’s for sure, Hideo’s life just became anything but boring.

TL;DR, the 'play' and ecchi part really not my cup of tea, but aside from that, I like the tragedy and their development, and Sahana-chan fvcking evil yet so enchanting.

So, when I ask for ""tear-jerking manga recommendation", someone recommended this and seconded by others. Thus as a fan of tragedy, I read, waiting for the part, "when will it be, when will it be" ...And that's where I did it wrong. I appreciated the building of their relationship, but turned out I didn't enjoy their 'play' and the artwork (the part where no girl ever seemed to use bra), and turned out it disturbed me so much that I read while thinking "when will this end... when will I get to the part...". At least I thought, they didn't need 8 volumes really for all those playing. So I was tired and the fact I know tragedy's waiting thus making me waited for it, costed very dearly in the reading enjoyment.

Very heart-breaking in some scenes. Most memorable for me is when

Kurumi's crying so hard in her room after Aiba told her he's saving to bring her to see the waves... When Kyoko said she's glad to have met Kurumi...

and I think I got teary-eyed when

Hideo picked up Kurumi last time in her room in ICU, where Kurumi lied in her bed, looked so fragile and truly seemed as if she's just waiting helplessly for her time to come T__T

I'm so amazed I stared at that panel for some times...

Enthralling

As I read, I felt as if I were Hideo. Even I couldn't tell much of what Kurumi was thinking, but I kept reading. This manga has its happy moments, its anxious moments, its sad moments, and even lustful & daring moments that left me with heavy breathing. Its ending was bittersweet. There are many questions that many never be answered, but all together it's a great series.

Unique and Moving

The fundamental thing to understand about this manga should be apparent fairly early on: This MC is socially hopeless and terribly timid, and most likely has a dismal future. Then something amazing happens to him that teaches him (slowly) how to change.

Terrific art, lovely woman (if you like them skinny), and well-plotted slow growth in a surprising and unlikely relationship.

For you tiresome guys who refuse to read any story that doesn't have a Certified Alpha Male as the main character, "Methinks thou dost protest too much!"

Honestly, at first I thought this was another dumb typical ecchi manga with less than spectacular art with a weak pathetic male lead who gets the hot girl female lead after reading Chapter 1. I actually dropped this for awhile because of this until I decided I'd give it another chance one day. That was when I knew I was totally wrong. This is NOT your typical ecchi manga. There is so much more to this than that. This manga will make you smile and tear and go "WTF IS GOING ON" throughout. You'll go crazy addicted to this manga and just want to find out what happens next. Slowly, you will grow attached to the characters, especially the main character, as you feel and experience the story from his point of view. Give this manga a try, if you don't you are really missing out on a unique, perhaps maybe even life changing experience. As for the art, it gets better after volume 1. Currently, this is my favorite manga ever rgiht now. 🙂

I started reading volume 1 and personally I found this manga rather boring. It seemed to move extremely slow. I could not even finish volume 1. Maybe I needed to read on more, but my heart was not into it. This is only my personal opinion, so judge for yourself. Some with different preferences may find this very good.

Let's start with the two main characters - sort of like the very tale they play out, they're not amazing, nor unforgettable - but as their story progresses, both Hideo and Kurumi build a solid trust in their dangerously unnatural relationship with each other. It's believable, thought- provoking, and something you definitely want to read about.
I definitely agree with Kazuki27 in that this series comes off as a raunchy almost hentai manga but after reading it all the way through, all those events seem to underscore the seriousness of the whole abnormal relationship the two characters hold. Kurumi's cruel circumstances and Hideo's pure white (heh) innocence are the things that I believe are at the core of this story.
The story's downfalls, like its loose ends and underdeveloped side characters, are forgivable, I think, in light of the fact that you just won't notice them until you've finished the series. That's how much I was focused in and hoping for Hideo's wishes to come true.

I honestly thought the girl at the end was Kurumi, until I remembered Hideo's quote about the last summer they spent near the middle of the series.

I read it in one sitting/sleeping/sitting. I don't recommend it, though I guess doing so sort of fit the book's motifs. Heh.
Oh, and I have to say that by the end of the series the scanlators are hilarious and unintelligible. My first reaction was, "I think they're trying to communicate, what should I do?"

tl;dr, a more bitter than sweet romance, and a definite recommend.

Absolutely a great manga with a great "love". The biggest issue with this manga is the TERRIBLE CRAPTASTICAL job the people scanlating did with the last couple books. It was nearly impossible to read let alone enjoy. That group should be taken out and beaten with the manga they claim to love. Because that escalating job is not how even a work like yu gi oh deserves to be treated let alone a story with a plot.

While the subject matter may not be to everyone's liking, this is definitely not about fan-service and there is truly character and relationship development that seem very real and endearing. Actually, the s&m elements really help express the character's tender trust for each other. Around volume four, the tension ramps up as you can really feel that the characters are really starting to emotionally connect with each other and an overall plot comes into focus more often.

I usually don't post reviews but this is a special case. Sundome is like one of those things in life you know you shouldn't do but you do. I dont think anybody would find it hard to compare reading this manga to any addictive actvity that can harm you. As many comment's before have said somethings you just have to check at the door before you read this manga and at times it gets really hard to read. In the later volumes as you find yourself wincing from the pain. Its very much like watching a slow motion car crash you hope everybody makes it but you just cant be sure. Reading this manga for me was like delving into topics I never wanted to explore to deeply. I found myself conflicted almost all the time. At many points in the story it was very hard for me to sympathize with the main characters as some of the activity they undertake or the way their relationship progresses is just too much to accept. On the other hand when I did sympathize with the main character I felt a little sick cause it made me realize that I could be a little sick too. That being said I say if you have to stomach to read it then do. The story is top notch, the characters are interesting and they don't rely on your sympathy for you to stay with the story, the topics discussed are done in a manner that is frank and downright blunt, the characters have true development and the supporting cast could probably carry a story of their own, At the very least between the pain the lulz can be enough to snap you back to a better place. Just be warned if you feel those "no no no no this cant be right" remember it before you read on cause its just gonna continue.
