Pretty good until the academy arc

I really enjoyed this series until the academy arc kicked in. It just really slowed down and seemed less exciting whenever MC became a teenager along with elf princess.

I really enjoyed this, initially.

But as others have pointed out, it starts to drag around the academy. I held out hope that it would recover, but instead it becomes rage-bait as the MC is mistreated at the conclusion of that arc.

Then it's training for the MC, which is boring. And then it's many chapters of side-character filler, which is much worse.

When it finally, FINALLY came back, after a looong hiatus, the art was too different, and the writing sucked. To be honest, the writing had sucked for a while, but the new art ruined the last of my interest.

Seriously, just look up spoilers for the novel and ask yourself if that's the kind of story you want to continue reading. Because it's not great.

But the first ~150 chapters are pretty good, if you can handle a story that doesn't have a conclusion.

One of the greatest Isekais

This is easily a gateway into isekai. The series differs from the usual genre by not getting tied down to a twist/hook but instead letting the full breadth of the adventure happen.

I'm wondering why, after all the years, this series is on MangaUpdates? I searched for it when I started reading and didn't find it.

Began very well, yet keeps changing directions, drags on, and is consistent

This is another one of those isekai series, but difference being the person was established in the old world and bring those experiences over. So initially, it was really good.

However, pretty early on, cracks began to show. Not sure why as a mage, MC suddenly decided not to use magic for 2 years to focus on swordsmanship, only to return to magic soon after. Later on, he was trained as a close combat martial artist. Yeah, not magic, lol. Began as someone extremely talented in magic (4+2), and with beast tamer magic, but keeps focusing on other things, and not sure why he keeps restricting himself out of nowhere, and keeps facing crisis after crisis partly because of that.

MC has a very strong pet, but chooses not to bring it to where he is in dungeons, then every time, he would face some absurdly strong monsters out of nowhere. Then he almost dies, and next time, he does it again.

Initially the series was going the conventional shounen route, but then somewhere along the way decided to go the despairing seinen route, where people began dying, MC trying to aid his close people start backfiring (and almost killed a close person). A few times after MC saved people, he was persecuted for dumb reasons instead of being rewarded.

I think the main issue is plot consistency, or the lack of it. Lots of plotlines were explored then dumped, lots of characters keep having developments that don't make sense, or change personalities for no reason. Lots of new plotlines get thrown in here and there. Imagine plot going at a straight line early on and then started become swirly and so on after that.

Thus, I came to the conclusion that the series probably drew references from other series, since it is so inconsistent and I could clearly find some plotlines very similar to other series. If you like the start, go for the series "A returner's magic should be special" because it is similar but much, much better.

Decent Isekai with Good Art

It's a rather interesting story, and at times it tries so hard to explain itself? I don't hate it tbh, most isekai doesn't care about explaining how abilities come to be and all, but this series explain it pretty well.

The problem is, I think as far as it goes, it is not offering much than tropes you usually find in cultivation stories, which is weird to say because it is not, while it kinda is at the very same time (just not with rigorous 'rank' you usually find in such story, but still). Well art is nice, I'd give that, so it's a plus, but a must read, I won't really say so.

Also if I may add, I don't like very much academy or school arc... It feels boring because usually it's MC towering over other his peers and then some bad guys trying to bully him but overestimate their capabilities. It's very cliche and annoying at the same time.

Still, it's one of better isekai out there, it maybe cliche and it's eagerness to explain everything may make it boring at times, but it's decent. Just because it is taking from other ideas doesn't make it bad, in the end it's how they present it that matters, and I'm quite eager to see what happen next.

The amount of people recommending this to me just doesn't add up with what I'm seeing.

Also doesn't help that Tapas suddenly blocked my country mid-serialization.
