Description

The story takes place in an era similar to that of ancient Rome in a country called Chronos. It follows a group known as the Temple Mercenaries. In particular, the manhwa is about Ares, Michael and Baroona, three young warriors with mysterious pasts and surpassing skills...

The manhwa is notable for its subtle use of anachronistic elements (Ares' shoes are similar to that of classic Adidas), as well as very dynamic and fluid action sequences.

What is Ares ?

Ares is THE shounen, THE ultimate comics.... that's all^^
More seriously ares is really the best comic that i have ever read (I use comic because i mean any kind of comic that exist eastern like western kind).

The art is one of the point people say that it's bad but it's not, it's just different and it's really good, well if you spend all your time reading japanese mainstream shounen (bleach, naruto...) you will find it strange but after the first volume you will love it, it express the feeling of the personnage so well, the fight are splendid and without super-power-of-the-death-if-i-use-it-i-win like in huh... naruto, bleach^^

About the story... here too it's really good, the story begin from nowhere and continue using the element you read before unlike other manga where the story continue with element who come from nowhere... no it come from the past of some guy... no i don't speak about naruto, no, no...'^^.

PS: i don't have anything against naruto or bleach.
I like to read useless junk from time to time too, it make me dream that in a few years i could become an author.

Surprising depth and realism in a shounen adventure story

A typical shounen adventure manga, right? That's what it is for most readers, I'm sure. But Ares has surprising depth. It doesn't go into detail in any of the serious parts which is what I like about it.

The over-the-top fights, fantasy weapons, superhuman-like strength. They are all plot devices. What's the point of them being realistic? This is, after all, a shounen adventure. The only criticism I've read here seems to be on very shallow things like these. It's natural that the story seems immature for someone who is immature themselves.

The character relations, motives, personalities, warfare, the psychological and social effects of war, politics. All of them are more realist and complicated than most anything you'll find it modern popular fiction. Most of it is on the background and it just follows Ares and his friends on their cliché-ish quest. But this is a good thing. It's kind of a light hearted story and with all the drama and tragedy it doesn't lose that light heartedness. The ending does have melancholy but it is also a happy ending. A deep story doesn't need to be a dark tragedy. Ares doesn't gloat on it's depth but focuses on the simple drama and slice-of-life.

You don't need to over-think it—it is simply an adventure story after all. But it's the detail what makes that simple adventure story a small masterpiece.

Best manhwa ive read so far. There is a little bit of romance, which adds some funny comedy, but what really shines is the character development. Each character has a huge background with lots of detail. Oh, and Ares is really cool and i love how he acts around Ariadne.

I love this series. The artwork is really great, although different from what you'd normally see in a manga. I think this is what makes me like it so much. It's not any more cliche or unrealistic than Naruto or Rurouni Kenshin which are a couple mangas that it really reminded me of.

 I'm doing my best to make sure everyone I know finds out about Ares.  It's a shame that it's one of the hidden gems out there, and I'd really like to see more people enjoy it.  

 Some people have said that they didn't like it so much. *shrug*  What can I say?  We all have different taste.  I just hope you read more than a chapter before coming to a decision.  It's been a while since there was an update, so I don't know if this series will continue, but until then I'll be re-reading the volumes that i have. (all the way up to 18)

 I've read lots of manga.  I read Kenshin and loved it.  D-gray man, and Black Cat are really good too.  Battle Royale was fascinating in a really sick and twisted sort of way so of course it was also great.   I read Naruto all the way up to chapter 150 - 200 or so and stopped because the story seemed to go on, and on, and on....  I can tell that Ares is one of those that will stay interesting no matter how long it continues.  Even after 18 chapters not one situation has been the same as another.  

 Many shounen mangas are all written on the same type of plot setting (not necessarily a bad thing fyi)  The hero will get some power - beat up monster - get more power - fight stronger monster... and so on...   Ares doesn't really do this which is why it's so fascinating.  All he's gaining is experience, both mental and physical, without the pressure to get stronger so he can fight the next big bad guy down the line.

If you like the same old protagonist who has awesome-super-duper powers that can kill everyone in one strike - don't read. If you can't stand war, and strategical tactics and taking time to actually check the details, don't read. If you want perfecto art (and doesn't give a crap about anything else) don't read.

For the love of hell, Ares stands out as a progressing story with uniqueness, not the same recycled plots which you can go read in Naruto or Bleach. Its art quality, plot and characters develop together - so really, if readers would just put a little patience in and keep reading instead of deeming it "crap" and dropping it at the first few dozen chapters, they'll be rewarded with reading a good manhwa. And enjoying it.

So would those who want to slam this manhwa actually give some decent negative points about the manhwa instead of slamming those readers who actually like this story?
You ain't getting more cookies that way, ya know?

I simply love it! Couldn't stop reading it. The plot might be predictable to some but it went smoothly unlike some mangas. It didn't feel like the author made the plot as the story goes. Only flaw is that some of the side characters look similar so I was confused at times, especially during the war. Other than that, everything is pretty well done, including the art. My advise, you need to read it to the end to understand everything that is going on. Love the ending lots, there was closure to everything, I think.

at first, the art is unique, and different from what are in most mangas, but it grows on u. its actually pretty cool after u read the first few chapters. the story line is probably the best thing about this manga, the fights come one after another. the characters are unique and each of them are amazing in their own way. it is TOTALLY a book worth reading 😀

First of all I'd like to clarify something. The art isn't "sub average" or " decent" or
any other degrading term everyone wants to tag it with. To begin with its above average and once you're engaged (several volumes into it) into the story it's absolutely stunning. Not only is detailed but the art is symbolic. It uses frames angles and graphic images in order to make the story that much more engaging.

Heres an example of his art. He doesn't cut corners either. The only time I've felt disappointed was with the Cygnus vs Ares fight and it turned out that was worse than usual because of unusual humidity that wouldn't allow him to concentrate on his work.

The story itself is impressive. You'll almost never hear me say that about a manga. A manga is for the most part a japanese comic that has the artist and the writer be one in the same instead of seperate individuals like in the United States or Europe. If the artist happens to also be a gifted writer (exceedingly rare) then the manga is an artistic success (there are many mainstream mangas that aren't even though they do happen to be commercial succeses).

The story is slow to start with but becomes a true gem as it progresses. Its similar to cowboy bebop which introduces the characters and then reveals an extraordinary unbecoming past for each individual. Don't take the series at face value. You might be expecting a graphic One Piece rip off from the initial impression that the first chapter tends to have. Don't. This manga is much better and brings new meaning to the phrase you can't judge a book by its cover.

Also I've read many mangas and the philosophy in this one is the closest thing resembling the truth that I've seen so far. (Its not tolstoy but its certainly acceptable)

Side Note(skip if you don't want to read. Its rather lengthy):
Some series have the most ridiculous explanations for human behavior. Tite Kubo went as far as to suggest that the difference between a king and his horse was instinct. He failed to mention that a human is a million times smarter than a horse and can therefore capture enslave and manipulate their primal instincts into serving him (By feeding him when he's done good and punishing when he's done bad. conditioning.). Its the ability thats different, certainly not instinct. Our primal instincts are almost a carbon copy of a horses. No such philosophical pitfalls here (In ares).

I've read one piece, death note, bleach naruto, tenjho tenge, Prince of Tennis, Full Metal alchemist and many other mangas but nothing that made me want to write a review as much as this one. The fact that its probably the best manga I've read coupled with how undervalued it is made me create an account on this website. All of the volumes on one manga amount to about a 300 page book. It took me a day and a half to read and I absolutely love it. Everyone should read this manga or at least sample it. Don't be fooled by the initial appearance though. This manga becomes better as it progresses. Almost like the artist had never drawn a manga prior to this.

Now THIS is a perfect manga. I love the plot, the characters, and the art. I admire how the manhwaga doesn't forget about any of the characters, giving each of them a definite ending. The manhwaga has an eye for detail so all the questions I ask about are answered by the end of the manhwa. I adore the characters and their growth. The manhwaga skillfully portrays emotion and focuses enough on how events affect the characters. I thought each character was fully developed and I liked seeing how each on matured. The story was fun and always interesting. I never got bored reading it. There's enough of everything 🙂 And I actually like this type of artwork. I couldn't ask for more. All my expectations were met by Ares. Although it's not a classic like Rurouni Kenshin, I will dare to say that Ares is on the same level.
