Awesome Manga but not a convincing start

As a fan of strategic I think this is the one of the most awesome manga I've read. It's not just superficial strategie in which the reader is just deceived in order to make it seem "smart".

The only problem is - at which probably the most gave up on reading the manga - that the female protagonist takes a while (about ... I'm not sure probably 30 chapters) until she gains real confidence and isn't just controlled by her emotions. In the first chapters I was also temped to put the Manga away, because the protagonist seemed so clueless that it hurts (and I want to punch her more then cheering her on..because another guy had to save her the whole time..).. but nevermind that, the manga is great 🙂

I think this manga is really smart. Each game has their unique points that grab my attention (I've only read up to the end of Round 3 so far). The manga is mainly psychological and relies greatly on intelligence. I find myself comparing Liar Game to Death Note, and to be honest, I think it is almost as clever as Death note, which is saying something.
One thing I don't like about it is the main character, Nao. Like many people say, she is utterly stupid and unrealistically honest most of the time, which is infuriating as hell. And the fact that she cannot survive in one round without Akiyama just pisses me off to no end. Akiyama is a credible character, but he has a dull personality and a stereotypical look which makes him very forgettable. Other characters in the story usually have below average intelligence or just plain moronic.
Anyway, despite those, I enjoy reading Liar Game. The cleverness of the puzzles is the only thing that keeps me reading.

Mind Boggling

First of all, if you are one who reads manga mostly for the art, this is probably not for you. The art is very American compared to others. Nonetheless, the artist is very thorough, with backgrounds to nearly every frame, and easily distinguished characters.

Most importantly, the main reason to read this manga is to observe how the characters approach seemingly impossible puzzles and solve them. Each and every solution is proven mathematically or psychologically. It is very entertaining and interesting to read these solutions. (which the opposition creates solutions for, which in turn, makes the main characters make solutions for, etc etc.) The only problem I have with this aspect of the manga, is that one or more characters describe every solution as "foolproof" despite the fact that most solutions are countered just a few pages later by the opposing team.

The plot is very slow moving if you are paying attention to the entire picture of winning the entire Liar Game. Despite being so many chapters along, I still only feel like we are just scraping the surface of this Liar Game.

Each plot arc does flow quite nicely. Despite what other reviewers have said, I did not find the plot at all predictable. I could/can never tell when a character was/is acting or not, and for whom. It is easily distinguishable where the climax of each is. Some arcs seam to carry on forever. You have to be a very active reader to follow exactly what is happening and when it is happening.

The characters are all pretty well rounded. Nao (the female lead), is consistent yet unpredictable, and the mangaka succeeds in keeping her in character despite situations which it would be so tempting just to make her go super bad*ss.

The male lead is incomparable to Light from Death Note. Many have made the comparison, but neither the male lead in Liar Game or Light from Death Note would succeed if their roles were switched with each other's. I don't want to go to far into that though...

In total, I totally recommend this to anybody who is looking for something that will make them think, and isn't looking for too much art-wise. 😀

I really like this manga, it surpasses death note (try it!)
I like the main girl, not only 'cuz she's cute but she's kind of purer than everyone else... she's not as smart as everyone else apparently but she's nice and I guess that's what matters.
Akiyama is awesome.

w8, i just read some one else's comment that I really liked:

The plot was original enough to captivate me through the first volume, but I stopped reading around 3 volumes or so for these reasons:

-Plot is predictable, if you keep in mind that everyone is untrustworthy. The author tries to be clever, but every "reveal" is so-and-so turned out to be a friend/enemy, which is easily predictable.

-All characters except the two main characters are shallowly represented. The author tries to create an illusion of psychological complexity (the main character even studied psychology in school), but it doesn't go beyond "everyone is greedy and untrustworthy in some way" (except the 2 main characters, who are unfaltering).

-Scenerios are repetitive, and it seems like the "Game" could go on and on (as long as the author wanted). This diminishes the suspense since you know the heroes are going to recover their money eventually, yet they could always be caught back into the game (repeating over and over).

-The girl main character is useless and makes one want to punch some sense into her. The male character is forgettable and nothing he does is really that clever (despite what the other characters' reactions will have you believe).

-The art is not very good, though this would not have stopped me from reading any manga. I didn't notice the lack in detail until other reviews here pointed it out.

Ok, so, straight to the point then...

If you're going to be shallow and base everything on how it looks, this manga is not for you. AT ALL. The art isn't anything to look at... It's not in the least bit pretty. But to be perfectly honest, it suits the story. It's portraying the darker traits of people and is very much a psychological manga about cheats, liars, and power hungry schemers all duking it out against each other with a huge amount of debt hanging over their heads --hardly a pretty tale full of singing and joy and bishies and if that's what you're after I suggest you walk away. Now.

Oh, and if you're after blood and guts or lots of action. Walk away.

If you're after something exciting and suspenseful that has you stopping to think about whats going on and reveling at how clever some of the points were (especially when you haven't thought of them yet), then stay right where you are! This is right up your alley, my friend.

Yes, after 90 chapters there are a few repetitions.The scenarios all have a bit in common, but when you consider that it's a game, the rounds are all going to be similar to some degree. Afterall, what game changes so much that there's nothing each level has in common? None, I tell you.

The explanations get tedious, but only if you read the chapters back to back in one go. You have to remember that this is a serialized series, so to keep readers from being confused or forgetting what happened the repetitiveness is necessary to a certain degree. I will admit that the line has been crossed a bit here and there, but nothing to fuss over extensively.

As for the characters; Nao makes mistakes that she should really learn from, but makes again anyway. But she's a sweet girl and despite her naivety and gullibility, she really is an intelligent person when she needs to be. Akiyama continues to always a have a near flawless plan for victory, but he does have some weaknesses. Fukunaga seems to sway from ally to enemy at every blink of the eye. They're all good, likable characters with their own faults and quirks, just like rest of us.

I couldn't put it down when reading it and if this sounds like something you'd like, then I can almost guarantee you'll be the same.

I really enjoyed reading this manga. the characters are well created. I think some people are just too fast to jump the gun, not giving Nao the chance to prove herself. she is trusting, honest, and unconditionally forgiving, everything we humans lack. she does everything whole-heartedly, and I really do admire her. (never giving up on people). she is very naive, because of her honest nature, but that's what makes this manga the Liar Game. she is a lot more perceptive than she lets on. nao and akiyama is a really complimenting duo. because he's more of the opposite, wanting to trust people but a lot more careful and calculating about it. as the manga carries on, you can definitely see nao growing, she's still innocent, but she does know things.

the story is well-done (at least in my opinion). the characters are well-developed and you can see their personalities, they're consistent. I do reccommend this manga to people who are looking for a good suspense. it's not ridden with romance (I'm a shoujo lover), but there are very light and subtle hints, which I really do like 🙂

Before I start out, I want to say that I am an avid-shoujo manga reader. The only other mangas I have read and liked besides the shoujo genre is Death Note, and, well, this manga: Liar Game. From the first chapter it's already filled with different events taking place. The logic forces you to think, and it explains each situation carefully so it's hard to get confused.

Many people have compared this to Death Note, and other than the fact that Akiyama shares one trait like L -- a genius -- from my view, nothing else is really that similar. And in my opinion? Liar Game surpasses Death Note. Not by a lot, because honestly they're both great mangas, but I think Liar Game has more edge and logic.

The art isn't too great, a bit below average, but the characters compensate for that. Akiyama, the mastermind, is obviously by far my favorite character in the series. He's amazingly smart, yet sometimes makes mistakes in his calculations which I find totally makes him not cliche. And then there's Nao. She's actually a good character in the series in my opinion. She actually thinks, and although she might not be as intelligent as Akiyama, she tries her hardest, and actually a few times comes out with a solution.

Even if you are a shoujo fan like myself, or any other genre, I highly recommend Liar Game. You won't be disappointed--this manga is a must-read. (I'm surprised this manga hasn't been licensed yet. It definitely should be. ^^)

Nice try, but nothing outstanding

It's got a nice premise, and the build up isn't that bad, but I feel like the characters are missing something. They simply aren't that cool, or easy to identify with, or likable.

The guy's alright, but aside from his obvious smarts, we don't know much else about his personality, which leaves him quite bland for now. The Death Note comparisons really stop at the smarts, because otherwise, Akiyama still has ways to go before catching up to Light's appeal.

As for the other characters? No comment.... is what I would like to say, but I can't help myself: the female protagonist is just plain ANNOYING, wow. Terrible.

To be honest, I think the mangaka does a good job in making the games and strategies look smart and complicated, but they really aren't. If you think about it a little, some of the stuff really isn't all that impressive.

In the end, Liar Game is a decent read for those with time on their hands.

this is the smartest, most clever manga i have ever read. the plot is original and interesting, and the characters are unique and powerful.
maybe not the most philosophical manga out there, but it is definitely the one that makes you use your brain the most.
not a bad chapter anywhere. its like the most stimulating read ever
i strongly suggest this for fans of Detective Conan (especially the ones that try to solve the mysteries before Conan reveals them)
