I read the first volume and it got on my nerves, so i just read the last volume and skipped the rest. It may not be 100% shounen-ai, but it does border on it. for the most part though, its non stop wacky slap stick which for me, kills the mood.

Ok, I just finished reading the manga and I loved it. It's one of those more profound shoujo manga. I'm the type of person who wants to know the genre they are reading before starting and even though this manga deals with LGBT issues and can be confusing at times (has plenty of fan service for shounen ai lovers) it is mainly shoujo and so is the focus of the story, the shounen ai parts of the main characters are more of confusion than true romantic feelings. Anyway, the manga is really good, keeps you wondering what is really happening (in a good way, sort of mystery) and the characters develope through the story, so by the end you came to like them much more than at the begining (at least me XD).

I think this manga has way more complexity than just the average shoujo or shounen ai manga to be classified that way. It's not so simple as it's put to be. The main character, even though definitely attracted to his 'rival', really loves Nina and wants to protect her. There's even some other issues: the transvestite model and his desire to be a female, which is dealt by the author in a very delicated way, the girl whose father controls her life too much. The boy who's in love with the model he later discovers to be a guy, the boy who can't confess his love to the world because he and his girlfriend are in the music business, where relationship is frowned upon. Not to mention the main's character 'rival', who obviously got more issues than one can tell...!
Even touching sensitive subjects and being beautiful, it still retains a strong pace and an energy unknown in this type of manga. Shibutani-ku Tomo no Kai is hilarious, sweet, and completely addictive. It's a wonderful work, and even I liked it - and I'm not a shoujo manga type of girl!
