Description

For some reason, she was very attracted to the way he twirls his pencil, and from then on, she started taking interest in him. Second time around

Maybe it was the mood I was in that differed to the first time I read this but I found it more to my liking than when I went through it the first time. The first time, I found the situation believable, as I've gone through something similar in the past, but emotions weren't really there from a lot of the characters. Sumire was cute at times but as other people have said, she seemed stupidly persistent.
The second time however, I was more forgiving. The girl was persistent and it probably made her look stupid but that's not such a bad thing. It's kinda understandable that your feelings tend to make you do rather impulsive-like things, whether it stemmed from love, anger, or envy. So I tried to be more lenient when judging the main's actions. This time around I felt it really realistic how the mangaka portrayed their (sumire and daichi) interactions. The always made me smile and go aw. It was awkward and great and very true.
Compared to bokura ga ita, sumire wa blue is much more subtle in its drama, and much more down-to-earth in its storytelling. I personally perfer sumire wa blue's atmosphere. I'd love to read more like it.

Aw~ It's a bit sad to write this comment, after just finishing the series without a break, but ... Although the artwork was okay, and matching the rather calm & clear atmosphere without any unnecessary twirls, the development of the relationships seemed a little static to me. As clean as the settings and happenings, the characters acted accordingly, but at the same time a bit emotionless IMO. Even till the end the romantic side of the affection Daichi ...

... shows for the main character looked pressured by her actions and the passive behaviour of his childhood friend. It was rather hard to believe, that he left his girlfriend after all those years and the intimate level of their relationship in the blink of an eye, when he has from the beginning focused on hockey. The last chapter couldn't help, but has been another moment pointing out the shallow relationship between him and the female lead. Sighs.

As for the female lead, I agree and her actions gave by times a stalker feel off. It's okay, if a character is a little pushy and not all shy, still after being told to stop by the object of her affection that leaves a bitter taste.

Anyways, 5 points for the attempt to create a realistic setting and trying to show the awkward side of the "falling in love at first sight" scenario.

I rather Shinobu be the main character. After reading the last side side story, I find that her character is WAY more interesting than Sumire's. Honestly, I'm kind of curious if she meets that boy that transferred to Hakodate again. I liked the way she gave him flu medicine in the end, so sweet! o0o and how she figured out that he was all covered in snow, which was why "everything was white". My rating goes to the side story.

... but why is it that in a lot of shoujo mangas a female protagonist/antagonist says words to the effect "I won't give up" and continue to harass/stalk/annoy the object of their affection? Is this an admirable trait? Is this supposed to be teaching young girls that its okay to continually hope despite being continually disappointed? Is this kind of behaviour supposed to be rewarded with the eventual reciprocation of feelings (or a restraining order)? What I don't understand is the sheer lack of self confidence that these girls have. Are they not able to look at themselves and think "I deserve better. I deserve someone who will love me in return. And I deserve not to come second best after another girl"? And even if the guy eventually reciprocates does that mean that if the third point of the love triangle changes their mind that he would leave you for his "No.1"?

There are so many other guys out there equally nice/worthy/handsome who would actually care about these girls that its not worth pining over an unrequited love. They need to move on and stop torturing themselves.

That aside, I did like the subtlety of emotions and the gentle touch of Obata's storytelling but I found it hard not to get frustrated with the main girl and I didn't particularly root for the main guy either as he never showed much interest in her. His turnaround came out of the blue and felt out of character or rushed. He himself states to his friend he couldn't like Sumire because he didn't really know her, and they didn't have any meaningful interaction after that (he even asked her not to come round to his house anymore). I never felt that there was a turning point when he fell for the main girl although I did feel his relationship with his girlfriend was fading fast. In the end, it seemed that he chose Sumire because she would fit into his lifestyle and be more willing to "come second". If Obata is trying to show that Sumire's selflessness and stoicism made her more deserving as a girlfriend then I think that is the wrong message. Plain simple fact; people fall for others for many reasons; some good and some bad but its certainly not because they were more deserving. I thought these characters barely knew each other to commit to a relationship and consequently, I wasn't emotionally invested in them.

sasuga obata yuuki sensei! as expected it's the kind of slow, realistic non cliche romance I've always been looking for in a manga. So far this kind of romance can only be seen in Obata-sensei's work! I didn't like the heroin in the beginning, i thought she was too persistent and if it were me i would've just given up, because I thought she was verging on desperate and annoying. But then again, looking at the on the overall scenario there's noting else she could've done if she really liked this guy. Obata - sensei is just a genius when it comes to capturing those sweet little moments and conversation with your crush. The quality of Obata-sensei's works are polars apart compared to other mangas that only focuses to the making out and such just to keep their readers interested (e.g. Kyou koi wo hajimemasu, UGH PUKE)

READ THIS if you love Bokura ga Ita that it PAINS your heart 😛 like me haha.

ultimately, i don't care for it. i started this a while ago because i'm a fan of the author. the main characters are difficult to identify with. the plot isn't as clean or as engaging as in Bokura Ga Ita. although, it does have elements of that story, kind of like a rough draft. i do enjoy all the other stories by this mangaka. i read My Beautiful Boy so much it's practically committed to memory.

I find with manga's that are structured like this that the ending is always rushed, the starting of this manga was beautiful very true and realistic. But the reasons for the way it ends are not clear, it feels rushed which is a bit sad really. The extra chapter does give a little more closure but overall I don't understand why certain things happened. But it was a nice read, it was more realistic then most manga's dealing with similar themes.

This is a great manga. It has a really nice light feeling to it.
As yumemiru said: the manga is kinda slow - but slow in a good way! It's rare to find shoujo like this one.

A shoujo done beautifully. I love this manga! It's got some cliche moments for certain, but all good shoujos retain some sort of cliche. I love the characters, and I love their interactions. It's so painfully slow, but satisfyingly real that I feel as though I'm watching their life as a movie.

//edit'd. Finally, it's finished. The ending was, as expected, a win for the heroine. But I wonder how their relationship will go... Sumire wa Blue sequel?

I've read the manga. It's a sweet love story of a girl who fell in love with a guy whom is in love with his best friend (a girl that is). Although it ended nicely, I still think the guy's a jerk...

I like the drama and I think it's worth reading. I know anyone who loves the rest of the mangaka work will enjoy this one too.
