Aaand we're back to this story being the irritating kind of stupid like in Ayu no Monogatari, rather than the amusing kind in Host. This time it's Reina's turn for more suffering, and the stupidity is in spades as everyone continues making decisions that go against basic common sense.
However, I will commend the author for giving at least SOME depth to this by showing Reina struggling to find a job to support herself and Ayu...which only makes it more disappointing when the story, once again, devolves into misery porn. Like in Host, Ayu is no more than a plot device; she gets a few cute scenes with Reina, but most of the time is wasted on the would-be savior/boyfriend Akira, who then goes on to become a martyr for absolutely nothing.
I actually cackled when Yoshiyuki grabbed the boss's gun, like he did with the knife in Host. Somehow, his bland ass can intimidate people who kidnap and rape women.
What could've been a nice story about Reina coming to terms with her role as a mother, ends up as cheap melodrama instead, and I'm starting to think that the author likes writing about women being abused. And, through it all, we have the all-too-familiar dumb commentary boxes that reiterate what we just saw, because, in a manga where characters are graphically raped and killed, we readers need to be told what basic emotions are.
