I’ve heard that the Deep Love series is a very good, relatively realistic and is a good read, but after picking up the first two chapters of this I can’t say I’m very interested. Normally, I’m inclined to finish series I don't really like simply because I just want to see how it ends, but I didn’t feel any inclination to beyond the second chapter. The art was lovely, but I felt that the story became increasingly melodramatic, to the point it simply became a farce. Yes, I'm not a really teary girl…
The initial chapter was quite good, it was fairly decent story wise, but from the second chapter, more and more tragic things keep on happening, one after another. I did sympathise with Reina, because the events aren’t improbable but are very unlikely all happen to one poor person… I thought little Ayu falling down the stairs and going blind, was a terrible plot device… Also, Reina seemed a little too naive for someone in her situation, and a overly enthusiastic (at first) about her new part time job.
With regular shoujo, I have fairly low expectations because I expect it to be frivolous and clichéd (but fun) drivel, but for josei I tend to expect something more mature and thought out. I honestly couldn’t imagine reading the entire Deep Love series based on this, the whole series just seems a little too over the top for me but we definitely appeal to those looking for a good cry.
