Another teen coming-of-age interpersonal drama from the author of ReLIFE. I said previously in my ReLIFE review that the author is really good at writing realistic teen drama, and that definitely shines through here as well, though it's a tad darker than ReLIFE was. (One of the characters, for instance, has to contend with sexual assault while another is reeling from the suicide of a friend.) As always, Yayoi Sou does a good job of keeping the situations real (even moreso this time since there's no weird pseudo-science B-plot) even when she dives knee-deep into teen angst. It's dramatic, but never melodramatic, if that makes sense.
As for the overarching plot, it's slightly more formulaic compared to ReLIFE. Although there's a general "goal"/thesis of the manga (to get decent scores on the final exam), the mangaka chooses to divide her time much more evenly between the main characters, so the narrative feels a bit more scattered. It basically jumps from character to character resolving their backstory so it feels slightly less organic than ReLIFE's handling of its character conflicts. The actual bones and flesh of each individual conflict is, as always, written extremely well, but their overarching connections with each other are much more flimsy, and they feel more like isolated, self-contained stories than anything. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but worth noting regardless.
As a whole, I enjoy this, even if, thematically, it's basically ReLIFE but with different characters. But with how good she is at writing these, I definitely wouldn't mind if Yayoi Sou simply continues to hone her craft writing realistic teen dramas such as these.
