Description

It's the 1920s and Mariko, age 16, is married to a man 30 years her senior. She is honestly happy to be his wife and really excited to board the Orient express in Turkey on their honeymoon trip. It is a love story, but not only love story

When I first read about Madame Petite, there's one thing that made me interested. It's the fact that the main male character here is an Indian. In many others shojo manga that I read, I rarely find a japanese manga that represent characters from other part of Asia, in this case, especially India. It's a fresh thing for me, and the mangaka even put a cultural representation about India here: the clothes, language, customs. Even if it might be a nobility customs. Mostly, other shojo manga will represent characters from China/Hong Kong or a mixed, like Shaoran in Cardcaptor Sakura or Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club.

Secondly, the thing that interest me is the complex historical setting and hybrid situation they were in. Imagine a Japanese and an Indian in France, at times when the colonialism still around, and when India was still occupied by British. The mangaka spoke about racism and discrimination towards Asian people very well here.

Not to mention that even between Asian countries, they didn't know each other cultures very well (Mari was thought as Chinese, since for them Japanese and Chinese are all the same).

This reminds me to the Lady Bird manga too. I love manga with a postcolonialism theme, especially if they were well-written.

Third, in this complex situation, there's a love story around. And the love story is really genuine and sweet too. In some interviews in Yuta and Asian Boss that I watch, the hybrid people are actually not that rare, but always considered as the Other by Japanese people. That they're Japanese, but different. That's why, I feel like a love story between an Indian and a Japanese in manga like this is really good, it represents the multicultural thing.

And the main lead being a polyglot? That's REALLY amazing! I love her because of this. I heard that polyglot are already rare nowadays. I'm happy that she can speak English, French, Japanese (of course), and still even learning to speak Hindi. She held her pride as Japanese, but she didn't lower others who's culturally different from her.

I know she's fictional, but I respect her a lot about this.

Totally recommended.

I wish there are more series like this

It gives the vibe of classic shoujo where romance is about sweetness with a little adventure of the protagonist. The ML isn't the stereotypical bishounen which gives a plus in my book. Even until this day, as I've heard, Indian culture is still like this, especially if they are upper class: They could only marry someone the parents have arranged. Anyway, I just love how the author did some cultural research before making a story. Any story that was done with care like this one always worth 8+ in my book.

Incredibly intricate, complex, and slow-burning....worth it

Almost everyone (myself included) likes and is accustomed to fast-paced, linear and singular plot lines, but Madame Petit isn't that. It is layered with multiple plot lines, yet they meld into one another miraculously. However, both the slow-burning romance and character development are the main thread that ties everything together. Every chapter has a bit of a "cliff hanger" to keep up the action and intrigue, but other than that, the overall story is building up to something spectacular. I'm only on chapter 30 right now, and wow. Will edit this review when the rest of the series is finished being translated.

A traveling adventure

This manga is, so far, a series of short stories involving Mariko and Neelam meeting various people in Europe and helping them solve their problems. There is a main plot, about finding Mariko's missing husband and Neelam's brother, but it has not progressed all that far by volume 4. So far, they have stayed in France but I have a feeling they will travel to other countries as well. The historical costumes and setting are gorgeous, as they were in Golden Days.

It started off amazing and had me really hooked for a few chapters, but then it strayed to a direction that did not make sense at all and then got bad. The main character also had a strong start until she began getting on my nerves with her decisions.
