Psychology / surreal art lovers, try this

I'm commenting just for the sake of this manga, because it is, in my opinion, brilliant. I read it years ago after buying it on a whim without even knowing a thing about it, and it was totally worth it.

A whirlwind of emotions, extremely well-drawn and written, and surprising because of the mangaka's choice of topics and his fresh take on them. It is kind of unique in the sense that it treats genders and social clichés differently, and I really liked that. Not your usual Shonen Jump type of manga.

The art shows nice contrasts like graphite style freehand drawings.

All of the cases/problems in this manga are analysed through the eyes of Chiaki, who is a psychology geek, with the main character's help. The "pictures of people's hearts" are always interesting and detailed.

As some people were saying, I cried as well... every time I read it!

So everyone who likes psychology and gorgeous, surreal art should give it a go!

Mixed feelings

The good: The ending, pretty much. Well, except for the watch which was forcibly introduced in the final chapter to give an explanation for one of the plot points.

... Which leads us to the bad: The exposition is mostly contrived and convenient. While it's easy to guess some of the characters' traumas (like Yosuke's and Ota's), the clues for the other characters can be so abstract - if not totally useless - that the revelation comes off as forced. Very forced.

Take Akane's trauma, for example:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She's introduced as a rebellious character who happens to be a model. The image Hamura drew of her heart ws that of a baby side-by-side with a rabbit full of holes, with both of them surrounded by vegetation. Her trauma? She hated vegetables because she believed the rabbit she had when she was little died because she fed it vegetables. Her low vegetable intake caused anemia, which caused regular fainting, which then - we're supposed to believe - caused her rebellious attitude.

Riiiight.

Three volumes of mostly contrived exposition isn't that praiseworthy, IMO.

I don't usually take artwork into account, but it's really amazing to see such precision on detail. It's really beautiful. Personally I think the stories are sort of....ridiculous, but the personification gives it some depth that cannot be ignored. Also, like many before me have mentioned, it's funny. I'm more interested in the main character than anything else.

I read a lot of manga in the last few weeks and this is probably the best.

I'm a fan of Furuya Usumaru as his mangas always look smart. In this case i wasn't aware it's one of his manga because i have a long list of manga to read and i was just picking them randomly.
By the middle of the first chapter i realized this is special and i looked for more info discovering who its mangaka was.

There are a few reasons why i didn't give it a ten. Drawing looks ordinary, i'd like it if he would stick to the stories and leave the drawing to someone else, he doesn't seem to improve from manga to manga. All his text looks crowded on the page. Yes, i'm used to it, but it could be better.
Story that matters is too short. I wouldn't say the individual cases were all fillers, but i'm not a fan of episodic cases. This being said, i was crying like a little girl in the last chapter. Is was a fine ending.

Definitely an above average manga.

sensitive people: don't read it at night. everyone else: read it now!

I used to get a lot of nightmares based on not scary, but disturbing and shifting imagery, and some of the imagery in the "picture symbolizing the person's problem" (see summary) could trigger that sort of thing.

But the intensity of images in the situation before make the resolution afterward so much more appealing and satisfying. And I like how
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the main character gains respect as he progresses, even if it's only a little respect mixed in with a lot of "What the hell are you doing?" His world is slowly opening up in spite of himself.

Right now, I have volume one checked out from the library (and I urge everyone who can't buy much manga to ask your library to carry the titles you love). I didn't read it last night, but I looked forward to my second reading of it this morning.

Another great work from this mangaka. The drawings are top-notch and the plot is so interesting! Never seen anything like this. Main character is likeable and funny in that slightly dorky way of his.

Edit: read all of it now thanks to Viz Media. I'm so sad to see it finish at 3 volumes, but for a series that ended short the ending was wrapped up beautifully. It all fit. Plus it's just awesome that the protagonist is an artist and the manga really focuses on art itself. The last chapter was... touching. Made me cry. >< I love how both surreal and REAL the manga was.
