This story has some potential but has some shortcomings that make it obnoxious at times.
The Good: Great fights, a strong central character, fantastic growth potential.
Chufeng (the central character) is very much an underdog, cares for his sister and mostly a good guy.
The world created by this author is fun and full of cool martial arts. However, the scale of things seems overly grandiose, and improbable. The 100,000 or so disciples of the Green Dragon School that all seem to have their own house and mill around the school with little to no direction or supervision as they self-train seems like a plot hole the author just did not fill yet…but this does create a good backdrop for the main story.
The Bad:
Chufeng becomes more and more arrogant as the story evolves. At this point I am hoping he gets humbled a bit, it is getting hard to take how cocky he is becoming. I am not talking Naruto level of cute cocky; I am saying it’s the creepy kind. There is a way to be strong and make impressions without mouthing off, but Chefeng has not figured it out yet. He seems to completely rely on strength and lacks class. I can actually see him becoming a villain later with his attitude, as he kills people for not showing respect.
Here is a cringe worthy quote:
“It seems that your supporter in the inner court is only so-so.
Also, not only do I dare to attack you brother. I will even dare to attack you. You better not let me meet you again or else you’ll have to face the consequences.
What, you have nothing to say?
That’s right. You better quiet down for me or else I’m afraid that the next time we meet, I might accidentally hit you to death. Haha…” - Chefeng
The names are a pain too. Chufeng belongs to the Chu family and all the names start with Chu. This makes the story a bit hard to read fast and follow, I had to make this cheat sheet to just to keep up.
Chufeng (main protagonist)
Chuheng (brother?)
Chuyue (his sister)
Chuxue
Chuwei
Chuyuan (father)
Chuxun
Chuzhen
Chuguyu (elder brother)
Chuxue
Chu Hongfei (Cousin)
Chu Nanshan (Uncle)
Chu Yuanba (Grandfather)
Overall it is a fun read, and for now I am going to follow it, but I am not sure how much more arrogance I can take before I drop it.
Update, I not going to drop it, the fights just get better and better. Me might be an arrogant SOB, but I love how he kicks butt.
