Just the latest craze that involves taking a two-wheel inline skate and adding a motor, suspension, and a shock absorber to enable the wearer to execute the wildest, wackiest, most aggressive moves you can imagine. Ikki has a lot to learn as he fights his way to the top.

A new edition named Air Gear Unlimited was released in 2014. The format is bigger and it contains some colored pages.

The story was good while it was just about AT gangs fighting each other to get better parts/regalia/to the tower. However as it progressed it just got worse. It was unique enough that if it had just stuck with the tricks and battles it would have been in my top 10. However the government plot/sky regalia/super powers that started popping up as the story went on just made it ridiculous,

Like most other works of Oh Great, Air Gear has action and a lot of fanservice. The story started off simple enough, with Ikki, the main protagonist taking up AT and starting on the way to becoming the number one of the AT world. However, almost exactly like Tenjou Tenge, the story slowly but steadily introduces more and more elements that dilute it and after a while, you have something that makes almost no sense even when read over and over again. At this point I have to ask the author where are you going with Tenjou Tenge and Air Gear (which are being drawn/written at the same time, although the former is monthly) and why? Why would you turn a simple story into complete nonsense?

Oh wait... this was a review... right..
I would recommend Air Gear to people who enjoyed the author's previous works and those who want a lot of action, fanservice, and crude humor.

This further proves in the Anime industry, anything can be made into a series, and achieve success. This series probably has one of the most annoyingly simple plots and no "twists and suspense" can save it's freefall into the categories of utter disappointment.
Great art though.

It's not as bad as tenten I guess, depending on how you look at it. Once again, the only thing it has going for it is the art, which is pretty good I suppose, but there's a lot of stuff out there with better (and a story to boot). Besides, hentai notwithstanding, art in manga is like diction in prose - it can refine a story, but the story is still what really matters.

I hate to write a scathing review on a popular series, but in truth both Air Gear and Cage of Eden sucked. At first, both were interesting enough and I tagged along for a ride... but eventually stories got twisted out of proportions, to the point where the original joy I found while reading just disappeared on me.

Characters' personalities and what not were stereotypical, shallow, and there weren't any characters that resonated with me on an emotional level....They just never became life-like. Just one dimensional people....

The main character did not grow mentally at all, even though his skills "soared" (ha ha i made a pun).

This series was basically a combination of cliches, roller skates, gang fights, crappy villains, boobs, and more boobs. This type of story-telling filled with tritely staged heroic moments may be wonderful for a new reader, but to a veteran shounen reader, this story reeks of the typical shounen jump formula mixed with a tiny brush of freshness--the flying skates.

But that's it. The story was far too cliche for me.

After Reading all the released chapters and gotta say, damn its fucking confusing , not just the storyline but the action too, like recently where they show what might happen and now when they really fight. Damn you get confused even when you go from 1st block to 2nd block in the same page. The action is not described properly at all, its like i am reading a page and the next is like i missed a whole lot of pages, i get that sorta feeling when i read this manga, but other than that this manga is pretty interesting i would recommend it.

There a lot I could write but I think otheres already pointed ut out. I liked the start with the rollerblade converted sport type, customize AT part's, and was looking foward to see all the different ideas and what would happen etc from the impression of vol1. Teams, gangs, winning parts etc. (ignored th fanservice but it did make it funny sometimes)

Then later maybe after vol 12 it went downhill for me, it drawn away from the entire theme of AT thing and learning new moves that i thought was so cool and level etc. It went into all this nonsense with super power stuff that should have just stay related to the AT instead of these over power guys that not even sometimes not related to AT all. Went to deep with political stuff. It pulled away from the AT games and focus on this villen thing. Maybe it could have shown up latwr when they reaching the final rank and learn bad news of the top rank people or aomething. It just felt way overpowered. Maybe they could stuck same plot line but tone it down but then maybe it be less cool. I wanted to see more skate tricks then havong to shoot super moves. Here and there would be ok. Though I guess that was for lower rank games and i though we be seeing more of those challanges but it fast foward skip or rule match only needed a few to move onto the next level. I guess i was exspecting more sport power type manga then having it switch to more to science power special moved that are just crazy. Maybe if the game where more on point ststem for move then bashing each other it would be great. Characters then learn super power moves that help them through challenges. I dont know. I just dont know how to exsplain it well. Just wanted cool sport roller blade and super cool sports tricks.

Agito is my top fav character.

The artwork was nice on the detail on the rollerblade and breakdown. I really thought and got excited that they were going to focus on stuff like that. Main char would upgrade his blade over time with new parts he won etc. Even if it fictional story and etc.

It's hard for to rate this since later on i started to dislike the story. sadly i think i'll have to give this a 5-7. VoI 1-11 would be a 10 score. I don't hate the manga, just very disapointed.

one day ill go and finish up the manga. I enjoy rereading up till vol 12 and the. skipping after to ch or vol i liked down the road. Will purchase the rest of the manga once it done.

Storyline is a Wreck

I stopped reading after chapter 165 because the storyline was a complete wreck. There were so many change of hearts and alliance-flip-floppings (see spoilers below for more details).

The Kogarasumaru was viewed as the most prosperous/strongest team. The team is carried by two members, Ikki and Agito. The others were relatively weak in comparison to the Kings (with the exception of Kazu, who is inconsistently comparable to the Kings at times). This wouldn't be a problem if this team wasn't viewed as the strongest team. Finally, Onigiri's battle strength is motivated by perversion. Without it, he has no battle strength whatsoever.I feel that he should be left out from the team because his lack of motivation to compete.

In regards to the change of hearts and flip-flopping:

The Sleeping Forest was initially was thought of as neutrally good, switched to enemy when Simca is assaulted, more adversarial when the Kilik's story was told, and back to neutrally good when Sora revealed his betrayal. Similarly with Genesis...

Worth A Shot

I started off watching the anime first, which was amazing. And I admit, when I started the manga, I got lost and confused - but I still read it hoping maybe it'll fan out. It did.

In the beginning, the author is building on the characters, the techniques, and the bonds between everyone. After much battling as many shounen manga have, eventually there is an ultimatum - one event that flips everything and everyone into mad work out routines and etc. Here is where people get thrown off. Because the author babbles on about physics and the law of whatever and the past, many people, including myself, get lost. But if you just go with it, you'll realize that it's not all that chaotic. To be frank, the author is probably just rambling about it to fill up the speech bubbles, but the art itself is great.

Another thing that throws a lot of people off is the sudden Obama character and politics. Well, in every shounen, there's a bad guy trying to rule the world and then suddenly you meet new characters that band together with the protagonist to take him down. Obama is just another character aiding the take down. The fact that he's the President shows how bad the villain is and how important ATs have become. There isn't any actual politics.

Air Gear definitely isn't a manga that you would expect is easy to follow because there is just so much information on each character. Each individual has a background story that goes deeper than most other shounens. It's clear that the author consistently builds on it which makes the story compelling. However, most people will see this as a scattered storyline bouncing back and forth between the past and present.

So why did I give it an 8.5? Precisely because I am one of the readers that did get lost reading this. I do admit that the author could have organized it more fluently, but hey, I still ended up understanding it. Maybe that was his/her intentions all along, but it's a turn off if the readers don't get it.

Either way, I believe everyone who reads Air Gear or will read Air Gear should brace themselves for a rocky story. Just be assured that there is a clear plot amidst the rocky-ness.
