Description

When the taller than average 172 cm Risa Koizumi learns that her occasional nemesis, the shorter than average 156 cm Atsushi Ootani, is romantically interested in her friend, she decides to team up with him. After all, she also has feelings for his friend. Unluckily, however, their respective crushes fall for each other instead. Determined to find new love after their recent misfortunes, the pair decide to cheer each other on while maintaining their usual dynamic of constant bickering.

Although they continually deny it, Risa and Ootani are more similar than they like to admit: they both have unusual heights, failing grades, identical tastes in food, and a tendency to act extremely childish. Together, they inspire laughter among their peers as a so-called comedic duo. Could the love that these two are looking for be closer than they think?

The premise: Risa, a first-year in high school who finds herself romantically entangled with Otani, her friend.

The dilemma: Risa is 5'7". Otani is 5'1".

The result: A light-hearted, humorous romance manga that has great character development and a unique plot. It does a decent job of defying common shoujo stereotypes.

This manga is not a deeply profound, life-altering discourse on romance and friendship. It's great for some laughs, and I fell in love with Risa's persona. Unlike many other shoujo mangas, LoveCom has likeable characters. Risa isn't afflicted by that shoujo stupidity and romantic desperation that plagues many protagonists; Otani is not your stock supposedly-perfect-but-gets-weak-when-it-comes-to-love romantic interest. The characterizations are consistent, and both of them are supported by a funny and enjoyable cast of side characters.

Some flaws with the series: some of the arcs and dialogue feel a bit fabricated. The grandpa arc is one that I particularly dislike, and the events surrounding Mighty had me mentally screeching, "But this would never HAPPEN. And if it did, it would be CREEPY." Dialogue felt unnatural at times also-- I could definitely perceive that Umibozu was used as a common interest between Risa and Otani, and it felt quite strained at times. Their giant/dwarf act did grow tiresome as the manga progressed. But these complaints are not serious ones-- there's nothing offensive to either the readers' intelligence or the audience's sensitivity here. Just genuine, cutesy romance.

Overall, LoveCom is a series I'll definitely reread for the comedy. The characters are lovable, the romance is "d'awww"-worthy, and the plot puts an unusual spin on the archetypal shoujo norms. If you're a shoujo fan like me, I highly recommend checking this out.

THE BEST Shoujo Out There

Lovely Complex (or just Love Com) is honestly one of the best shoujo manga reads you will probably ever have in your lifetime. I actually can't begin to explain how this thing grows on you in such a short time. The characters are so full of life and personality that you'd be crazy not to love them. The humor is superb, I mean I literally roll around laughing and I've read the manga three times and seen the anime at least four times. It never seems to get old. Otani and Koizumi just keep you coming back for more humor, laughs, sad times, and good times. Their relationship isn't like the typical shoujo mangas where they fall in love all at once and both of them are absolutely perfect together. No. This manga is full of give and take and changing how you see people and, wow, it's amazing. It's a work of art in fact. I can't explain it but trust me when I say that this is a literal must read. 🙂

One of the best shoujos!

This manga brings back so many memories for me haha! But I re-read it recently and it's just amazing! I used to be into shoujo but now I've kinda grown out of it because they were all so repetitive and nothing seemed to amaze me anymore. But this manga is not only very non-stereotypical, it's amazing and very funny. Like if you think you can't laugh at manga, I dare you to read this because you'll be in stitches.
Also side note, the anime is awesome also! I'd say, like with most anime-adapted manga, to read the manga first but make sure you defenetily watch the anime later because it's halairious!
Highly recommended manga! It's like my title says:
It's one of,if the best, shoujo mangas ever! 🙂

Apart from being one of the best Shoujo's I've read, its also one of the most hilarious. Its rare for me to actually laugh while reading a manga, but the funny situations and smart comments here and there makes you laugh. Moreover it has its dramatic moments which will make you sympathize with the characters. Even though I haven't experience what Risa has experienced but I found myself sympathizing with her, crying and laughing with her. I think she is an unusual shoujo character,definitely very interesting and not boring girl with no personality like other shoujos I've read. Otani on his own is a different story, even though he's small, I found him to be very manly and cool indeed, very responsible, compassionate, even dense at times.
This is my second time reading it and I'm still impressed, never boring. I also watched the anime before but for me it doesn't even compare to the manga. highly recommended!

One thing's for sure, there's definitely no manga like this in the shoujo world! I watched the anime like twice a while ago and just now decided to read the manga (stupid of me). If anyone is wondering whether to watch the anime or read the manga first, I highly highly suggest you read the manga before anything.

This manga was pretty spot on to the anime but of course, had more to it. I really really love Risa. Her willpower and all that she went through for that little shorty is very strong and admirable. She's also not like other shoujo girls, when she cries it's not because she's weak, you can really feel how hurt she is and sometimes it's actually funny when she's crying hahahahaha! That's another thing; there's definitely comedy in this manga. HILARIOUS~ Her friends are also very funny and their personalities go really well together. Otani at first I didn't really like but I found later on that it really balanced with Risa's feelings. Since Otani isn't the type to say "I love you" or mushy mushy stuff easily actually makes it more meaningful when he does have those moments and you tend to appreciate it a lot more. But nevertheless, you can definitely feel how much he loves her through actions. Their relationship is so different but it's very strong since they have so much in common but sometimes i wish they didn't argue so much, it sometimes feels like they're back to just friends.

All in all, great balance of comedy and romance and you definitely won't get bored! Recommended for anyone who is in dying need of something different with a spoon full of laughter 🙂

Cute~!!! But... ouch...

This manga/anime is so freakin' adorable!! It makes me run out of breath laughing, and the cute moments - as well the funny ones - makes me smile so much!
.....Too much, actually. It's hardly rare that, after finishing a chapter or episode of Love Com, I've smiled so much my jaw hurts.
And as the finishing blow, I've been reading/watching it so much the past three days that I wasn't getting enough water, and it just made me smile so hard my lip cracked and started bleeding... TT_TT

But anyways! Point is, it's so awesome I deprived myself of sleep and fluids for it, so read it! xD

And, this is from the anime, it's not much of a spoiler, just something really funny if you feel like seeing something funny. =p (come to think of it, I think I can't link to manga sites... I hope youtube is okay...?)

Maybe it's because I watched the anime before this (several times), but I couldn't get through the manga, especially since they follow each other so much. I quite enjoyed the anime, but there were moments when I just got tired of Risa and Otani. Date, don't date, but stop being so flip-floppy!

I get feelings aren't so easily returned and it's the whole point of this manga that Risa is persistent in getting Otani to see her as a girlfriend and love her, but geez, it got a bit annoying after a while.
The dime-a-dozen moments Risa wanted to give up on Otani I thought "YES! Finally, now he can chase after her" were such let downs!

Risa pursues Otani, Otani ignores her, Risa gives up, Otani says or does something to make her love him again, Risa goes back to pursuing him. Over and over again!

Not that I don't like them I thought they were hilariously adorable and I couldn't wait for them to get together but there are those moments in some mangas/animes where you cover your face in embarrassment for a character and think "what the hell are they doing?"

This one had a lot of that, but I still think it was good. If you're reading or watching this for the first time you'll probably be blown away like I was, if this is your second or third time around you might start having the now-that-i'm-reading-this-again-it's-a-bit-annoying mentality.

But you'll still love it in the end which is why you'll keep returning to it just like me:]

Fun but eventually annoying

This is really a fun read. Especially at the beginning. Especially if you like "bickering love" theme, which I personally find adorable. The problem is though like many shoujo manga eventually the bickering love becomes annoying and the bickering and the chasing themselves turn into a very annoying theme and the "male" lead becomes embodiment of this.

While he is an amusing, lively character trying to overcome his height complex, he eventually becomes an annoying brat even by adolescent standards. The relationship that is both very lovely and funny among the two leads become very emotionally abusive and I am surprised how so most people miss that; a relationship doesn't become abusive only when there is aggressiveness or violence involved, but also when there is emotional pressure and verbal cruelty is involved.

Luckily, it doesn't go very further and may be you are able to write it off as adolescent angst but to be honest for me this ruined the manga. I really expected a lot from this, especially due to the way it started off quite well... Thus I give this a 6 overall, at most.

Hilarious with cute romance

I can't count how many times I laugh while reading this manga. A very cute romance comedy with lots of different events throughout the development of their relationships. It is quite long (17 volumes), but it doesn't make you feel like the author tried to drag it out. I would love to read it even more!!!
