ren falling for haru isn't as far fetched as some seem to think.
ren was severely abused and treated like an animal before he came to live with haru's mom. haru brought him out of his isolation and taught him all his basics; i.e. how to hold his tableware, the need to wear shoes, and so on. haru was the first decent person to connect with him (haru's mom made things worse at first), and in this story ren is completely haru-centric. his world, especially at the beginning, revolves completely around this person. part of the ongoing story is about ren learning to make connections with other people.

as for people saying that no kid would act as mature as ren, again, i disagree.
ren is extremely intelligent, and most highly intelligent kids act older than their age. add to that his early horrible traumatic experiences and you've got a kid whose brain runs at light speed and whose life experiences far outweigh most kids his own age. hell, his life experiences outweigh a lot of adults i know now.

and on top of that, once haru "tamed" the wild beast, ren spent the next several years in the company of adults. only adults. its no surprise to me that he would be far more mature than kids his own age and i'm surprised, given this background, that people seem to think he acts too mature for his age.

on another note, the japanese school system is different than ours. ren would have been 15 when he graduated jr high, not 13. so he's 15-16 when they move into the house. whether you count that as shota or not is up to you i guess. most kids fool around at least a little by that age and i don't have a problem with it in this case.

i also don't really have a problem with the age gap. there are a TON of shoujo stories out there with a 15-16 yr old high school girl dating her teacher or someone else with the same age gap so it seems hypocritical to condemn it in this story just because they're both guys.

lastly, they're not blood-related nor were they raised together. there's no incest taboo to break because there is no incest.

as you might guess, i like the story. i always enjoy abe miyuki's work, which tends to make me stop and think a bit, and the art is lovely.

for those who find the contents offensive but enjoy the art i suggest you try Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi ni Kike! instead, its barely shounen ai and the mc is an only child.

Super Lovers is a manga fill with many taboos. Not only is the relationship in it homosexual, in some sense, it can be consider pedophilia and incest as well. Which means that there are many filters for a person to by pass in order to read this manga without being clouded by their bias.

I think Super Lovers is unique in that it doesn't rely on Shoujo BL smut. Of course there is BL moments but that is not what makes the manga good. What makes the manga good is the personalities of the characters and the interactions between the characters. In other words, there is actually some depth to the story line rather than just fangirl service. It's a manga that people who don't like BL can enjoy if they can see past the BL.

In terms of story, a lot of people sees Haru's and Ren's relationship as a stall. People are saying that they should have sex already or that the drama is just to prolong the manga. I however, disagree.

In the manga, Ren is only a child. There is a lot of things that he doesn't know which he needs to develop. Much like the people that has commented here, when Ren doesn't get what he wants, he lash out in anger. For Ren, it is hard to understand Haru's intention because he can only see his side of the story. That is why he gets wary and insecure because he don't know what Haru's intentions are. This is every apparent through out the story. In other words, Ren is not mature enough to be in a relationship yet. Age is not the problem here.

Haru on the other hand is an adult. He understands that Ren is still a child. If he were to do something to compromise Ren, he will be restraining Ren's choice in life. That is why he refrained from crossing that line. Yet, he still loves Ren. That is why he try to test Ren so that Ren will remain in love with him. Ultimately speaking, Haru has the shorter end of the stick here. He can't commit to Ren completely because Ren's feelings might change once he grow up. He can't half ass Ren either because he will be running the risk of losing Ren. It's a lose lose situation. All he can do is stall until Ren mature and hope that Ren still loves him.

I think people these days have lost the ability to sympathize. Most people read manga in their point of view and only their point of view. They've forgotten to step out of their shoes to put themselves into the shoes of another person. That is why they hate things that don't go the way they want rather than trying to understand why things went the way it did.

Why are you even writing an anime review for a manga? Obviously there will be differences.

I can tell the difference between real life and not real life. There is a big difference. Just because I approve of something in a novel, anime, manga does not mean I approve of it in real life.

Anyways, this is a cute manga with some fluff here and there. The art style is good. The story is ok.

I'd recommend giving this manga a try is you can reserve your judgement. But don't have high expectations for the releases since it is very irregular.

Let's just talk about something...

Well, although I understand why people often tends to feel awkward about this manga and its plot, I just want to remember to everyone that this is a fictional work intended to satisfy a certain audience that, let's be honest, wants to satisfy some fujoshi's thirst of kinks and that japanese public (the most relevant public for authors) it's kind of ok with all this and more.
Besides that, the characters are really well developed, the art, as always, is remarkable, and the plot is great.
About the characters, I'm the same age as Haru and I remember just fine when I was Ren's age, maybe because of that it's easier for me to get both sides; first they're not normal people whit normal backgrounds and normal feelings, people this way tend to be attracted to the same kind of person (that's why I like how everyone seems to agree on how similar they both are). Second, it seems that some people thinks Haru's some kind of old fart who's being a horrible adult, I just want to let you know that at 22 people are NOT perfect adults who knows everything, and actually the thoughts Haru has about Ren it's a very realistic way of showing how young adults trouble their minds because they're dating someone too young or too old, his worry about how far he can go with him is the realest thing I've ever saw with a plot with a kinda relevant age gap. Third, kids Ren's age nowadays are parents and it's not surprising teenagers want to have sex or being reassured of they're feelings through sex, let's just not pretend as if all 15/16 year olds are some kind of pure angels fallen from heaven because they're not.
About the plot, the element that makes it interesting is that they're have all kind of REAL LIFE PROBLEMS. It's not just the relationship between Haru and Ren, it's also about them and the twins, the guardians, they're friends. Even if Ren and Haru are some kind of hikikomori/antisocial type, the plot makes us see how they get through everyday life as they met new people; they have also family and school problems beside the 'couple' problems, which just makes it more real than some manga with a happy go lucky plot. People minds are all diferent, complicated and unique, that's what makes this manga interesting enough to follow it.
Sorry for the really big text, as a final statement I just want to make it clear that this is my point of view and I don't intend in any way make you think the same as me (except maybe the part of teenagers being sexually active at young age because that's a fact in pretty much everywhere), so feel free to love age gaps or to feel disgusted by it, and if you don't like it or Ren seems too shota for you, then do you a favor and don't read it !
Thanks!

I admit that the title of this manga sort of scared me (Super Lovers sounds like a very kinky playful yaoi with a ton of sex and probably a very weird story, lol) and then the look of the uke, who looks like he's way young.
After reading it though, I really can't look at it as pseudo-shota (plus he is 15 - it's not real shota!) anymore, no matter how tiny Ren is!
He is very mature, real and doesn't come across as too young at all.
His short stature also isn't that big of a deal (at least so far in the manga) because it's not as extreme as other pseudo-shota works like Okane Ga Nai, ect.

Instead, this is a rather down-to-earth, realistic and sweet story of a guy with a brother complex an his 3 younger siblings.
The fact that Ren struggles so much with himself, figuring out his feelings and then trying to change their relationship from just brothers to more is done extremely well.
I love that the uke here actually wants to possess the seme as much as the seme wants the uke; their feelings are mutual!
Many yaoi mangas have rough semes forcing the uke, and then the uke just kind of going along with it thinking that must be love but in reality they only care that the seme kinda likes them.
It's soooo nice and refreshing to see an uke who desires the seme this much, makes moves, initiates kisses, worries about them and wants to make sure their feelings are mutual.

I'm glad I read this, can't wait for the following chapters and recommend this to anyone who is after a real story, lovable characters, a strong uke who tries hard not to be a child, and a slow-building romance.

Considering I'm a big fan of Abe sensei's "Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi ni Kike!", it's not surprising that I love this work as well!

(If you haven't read "Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi ni Kike!" and you don't mind a shonen ai relationship that does not go beyond teasing and kinda flirting, and especially if you want a long story - 26 volumes !!! - then READ THAT as well!!!!)

So Addictive!

I like how the author portrayed Ren and Haru's life in Canada in the 1st chapter. Everything is drawn beautifully in this manga, and I can't really find any faults in it. The first chapter was so sweet, and I like it how everything changed so quickly, something which was so unpredictable happened.

Each chapter is so much fun to read, especially seeing the two brothers together. I like how this manga gives out a pleasant feeling, and sometimes it becomes bittersweet. They started off having a pretty much normal relationship, and it gradually evolved into something more. Even though there are only a few volumes, there have been much character development, something which is lacking in most mangas these days.

The author pays much attention to each characters, which makes all of them likeable. Ren and Haru's relationship is still a little odd, seeing as they love each other as brothers and lovers.
Note: This is not a manga where the 2 characters just have sex with each other in practically each chapter, nor is this a manga about a guy who is doing it with a kid (Ren looks a bit like one, but he's 15). I kinda had a different image on this manga before I read it because of the cover page. But it looks really good though!

Plus, everything is quite slow moving despite the first few chapters, but you'll find yourself appreciating every moment of it.
Read this manga and you'll get hooked up instantly

Finally Gave In...

And boy am I glad I did. From it's first few releases, I couldn't help but notice that the series had been given a rather high rating. At first, I thought, "The hell? It can't possibly be that great, but 3 volumes in, and I'm seriously hungry for more. I seriously regret not learning Japanese at an earlier age, cause I know there are raw scans out there somewhere.

Anyways, on with the good and-oh wait, there is no bad. Haha, but seriously, I'm not joking.

Art: I read sensei's other work, Komatta I think? Loved it, but catching up and waiting for newer scans to be released seriously wore me out. Her art is without a doubt, lovely. And just when I think her characters sometimes come off as a bit expressionless, she proves me wrong when the emotion is clearly shown on their face. Very pretty and easy on the eyes with fine lines and details. I like her style.

Story: Honestly, the summary didn't pull me in at the beginning. Don't let that fool you as the story so far is amazing, along with somewhat believable interactions. It's sad, it's sweet, funny, and at rare times, quite sexy, which blew me away due to Miyuki-sensei's very soft, and almost non-existent sexual scenes.

Characters: Haru is seriously the type of big brother that I would want, seeing as how he's so affectionate with his younger brothers, because that's totally my thing as well. But about Haru and his whole affectionate kissing thing. This series contains little to almost no sexual scenes (sort of), but after reading about through 10 chapters containing scenes of Haru kissing Ren, I have to admit: I was seriously turned on. I've read plenty of hardcore yaoi, but I honestly have never found myself flushing over a kiss. I'm not sure if it's due to their expressions, or the intensive manner in which Haru goes about while kissing Ren, but whatever it is, I REALLY hope to see more than that. As for Ren, he himself is too cute for words, and Shima and Aki as well (yay, twins!). Haruko-san is probably my favorite though. Gotta love them strong-willed women.

Overall: I REALLY, REALLY love this series. Despite the shotacon element, it is done rather tastefully, unlike the shota/loli raping stuff going on in other stories. So, if you are a person who dislikes yaoi/shotacon, please do give this manga a try, as it may change your view on the subject matter more than you'd think.

I don't have any special interest in Yaoi / Shounen Ai series, but I could not stop reading this series due to the gorgeously drawn characters, touching & interesting romantic development, unique character personalities, and flawless pacing. The plot is awesome too.

Really, this manga is just.... GREAT. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much that i would pull an all-nighter to catch up to latest chapter! This author has a lot of thought-provoking themes along with the light hearted comedy.

What is the line between a "child" and an "adult?" Does a 17 year old "kid" become an adult when he turns 18 the next day? What are peoples' insecurities and misperceptions? This series gets pretty deep while also getting me addicted to the spicy action! I love it!

Am I reading the same manga as some others do?? Shallow characters?? Really? I can totally relate to their feelings and I do think that there are visible character developments. This story really got me tearing up at many parts; it portrays the loneliness of both characters really well and their past explains why they rely on each other so much. And when did it get repetitive? Sure there are always some misunderstandings and then they make up, but that's life? Rather than typical manga cliches, I don't mind reading 100+ "repetitive" chapters if they are written well. But well, each to their own.
I totally enjoy reading it and it will always have a special place in my heart.

I find this story very well done. It's not like other yaoi stories where the uke and seme just jump straight to sex, it actually takes it's time to develop the characters. I find the characters very unique. The art work is beautiful, as expected of Abe Miyuki sensei. this is not a shotacon or pedophile because Rin is still growing. the only problem i have with this is the slow updates. overall, i think it is one of the best yaoi/shounen ai story there is.
