It's the best version.
this is one of my favorite japanese novels (along with kafka by the shore which is a totally different genre). the characters are well written and the story about 'successful fascism' rings somewhat frightening in our own time and place. its worth reading alone for the rather spot on political statement it makes. there is alot more depth to the characters and some of the personalities are very different from the movie and the manga. the death game is the same, but theres more gore and general unpleasantness around so many unstable personalities. well worth the read as long as you have a strong stomach.
