Agreed. I tend to avoid it or ignore it unless its done well and Saga by Vaughan is honest and sometimes funny in its depictions. I'm also ok with something erotic like Stjepan Sejic's Sunstone, but so much stuff out there is fanservice for its own sake that its just shoved into perfectly decent stories that its grating. And yea, harem sure do seem to have lowest standards.

I'm sure "Mostly ignore it" is intended as neutral, but is not how I see it. I ignore ecchi in manga, because its often dumb or placed poorly and therefore annoys me which isn't a neutral feeling. However, the rest of the story or characters maybe interesting, so I try not to pay attention to the dumb fanservice bits unless its so over the top which then may necessitate me dropping it. So no ignoring something or putting up with it is not a good thing nor is it a neutral one for me.

I couldn't vote because I actually happen to love ecchi but it isn't the only thing I read (duh), so poll is pretty discriminatory in who is an is not an ecchi reader.

Quite off the subject, I don't think there is a right way to do ecchi but it ought to have mass appeal or mass approval for what the industry serves to consumers. BL and ecchi stand out to me in that both manga and non-manga readers commonly find them distasteful. Common reasons I have heard to explain why were because "it does nothing for me" or "it is gross".

It would be interesting to see the gender breakdown in this. I read/watch quite a bit of it so if I were a dude I'm pretty sure I'd love it. As a woman I have no opinion really and question myself why I read it (but still will).

Everything that I've seen seems to indicate that women tend to be much more perverted.

However, you're also never going to get a good estimate because, as far as I know, people outside of Japan (And, Asia in general) don't consider things like fujoshi-bait to be ecchi (Even though...IT IS).

I'd totally wear a T-Shirt that says "Don't feed the Fujoshi"

I think most of us think of ecchi as targetted towards men though it wouldn't be shocking to me if over 40% of ecchi readers identified themselves as female. Now I don't have any idea what the gender breadowns are but I think that the reach of ecchi is too wide for it not to have appeal to both genders and I am referring to ecchi that is targetted towards males.

I am semi interested to see a poll that addresses the overall feelings the average ecchi reader has on the ecchi they read. Something along the lines of:

What is your general impression of the ecchi content contained in the mangas you are currently reading or have completely read?

arousing
entertaining
intriguing
informative
indifferent
cringe
disturbing
disgusting
I do not read ecchi manga

If it's a manga based on ecchi, then I'll just avoid it. But when it's a manga that actually has something else to offer, that's when it really pisses me off.

Honestly I have no idea what the real "ecchi" entails. If it means boobs groping, skirt flipping and panties peeping, I don't like it because to me those are just filler and usually would drop there type of manga.

Interesting to know that fujoshi-bait stuff are ecchi too and I don't like that either.

Weird options to pick from. I'm kind of neutral towards ecchi. I don't hate it but i don't see it as crucial or important either. It really depends on the level of ecchi and the type of manga.
At best i can only choose between the last two options, but both kind of miss the mark.

your post really has me thinking as to what the appropriate definition of "ecchi" should be. my definition is that it's male-targeted sexual titillation, which I don't care for and is often juvenile, so I voted for "ignore". The only thing I've enjoyed from this genre has been the prison school anime and I actively ignore all the ecchi bits.

that being said, I am also a fujioshi and read a shit ton of BL. if we included "female-targeted sexual titillation" in there, what exactly would that look like? There are BL series that are basically made so that girls can stare at dicks, but those are usually flat out porn and there is explicit sex involved. So then maybe a shounen-ai that tickles female's fancies? By that logic, my fav hayakawa nojiko falls in the category, but no one gets close to naked or sexual, just making sexy googly eyes at each other. Other than that I can only think of reverse harems in shoujo, but since they're shoujo the males maybe only get their shirt off, nothing more. I haven't watched free!, maybe that counts lol.

I mostly ignore it, I loved Eden no ori but I didn’t pay attention at all to the “plot” as they say. Don’t like it but I ignore it just fine.

Although when it’s subtile and not full of big breasts everywhere it can be enjoyable.

Effing hate it with a passion. mad mad mad mad mad Most mangas don't use dicks as fanservice so why do they constantly feel the need to flash panties and boobs for fanservice? The whole ecchi thing is so male-oriented, it's like they don't care for the female readership. Shots of abs? I wouldn't mind so much. That's beside the point, however. The main reason is I don't think fanservice (both boobs and fujoshi-bait) is really needed in normal manga. I'm okay with it being in mature/hentai/yuri/yaoi/shounen ai/shoujo ai manga because that's what those genres are for but I don't want big boobs and panties constantly thrown in my face in shounen manga (Gawd, Air Gear comes to mind). It just throws me off when I'm so involved in the story. Now if the manga is solely ecchi-centered, I don't mind too much since I can just choose to avoid it.

"The whole ecchi thing is so male-oriented, it's like they don't care for the female readership."

Right. Ecchi mainly appears in shounen and seinen manga, which is written for publication in manga pubs aimed at the demographics of boys and young men, two groups that tend to have a lively interest in drawings of undressed and partially undressed women. Being a male, I like it when it's done well, as an adjunct to a good story.

Not everything has to be written to interest both sexes. Quite the contrary.
