yeah,because you get more involved in the manga and care about the characters,whereas if you had stick people(example),would you actually care about what happened to the characters??

it catches attention of course aswell and makes you want to read it,i've actually downloaded some manga and only had it for the art because it was beautiful.

um yess it definitely matters, if you're gonna read manga and dont really care about art, go read a novel.

if it didnt, i would be reading novels.

Why would you read Manga in the first place if you didn't care about the Art? If the art was bad I'd rather go read a Novel.

Nice, original, or otherwise attractive art is always a major plus, but, to be honest, providing the actual characters and storyline are good, I'm happy wither way.

I'd soon have a superb plot with original characters, but awful art, than a masterpiece image-wise with an abysmal plotline and bland characters.

Of course, Manga has a special spark to it that makes it so attractive to me, the melodramatic art and the character design, even in a more serious Manga, is what, for me, gives it that little extra something... and, once it loses sight of that it begins to look more like you average Western comic-book... and, well, in that case I may as well just read a worded book :/

I second that comment. I'd rather have a good plot and not so good art compared to the other way round. Although I have to admit it wasn't that way at first, as I did care about the art- style originally. Tokyo Crazy Paradise and skip beat are ones with not-so-good art but fantastic plot line that I love now, but used to avoid like the plague solely because of the art. I was just way to picky!

Art definitely does matter! It is easier on the eyes and has more flow with the story!

But in some cases the story is just as important! So make sure you read the description before you judge the art.

art is like the most important key factor in manga! For me, if I don't like the art then I wont read it, no matter how good or interesting the plot sounds....

I have my favourite artists, like every other otaku.
I love Yamane Ayano's yaoi's. But she can make some bad proportion mistakes (e.g you're my loveprize in viewfinder - from the Finder series - has this one picture

that yells, WTF?) But I absolutly LOVE Crimson Spell and the art there. This might have something to do with what year it was made or it was just one mistake that I can't help but comment on...

There are other mangas that have styles I'm not "fond" of, but I read because I think the story/art is cute/cool/weird/different/odd/so on, so on... e.g Usagi Drop. is a manga that the art says nothing to me, but the story keeps me reading.

Bara yaoi's the art almost never appeals to me, but most of the stories do, so I read them.

I normally choose not to read a manga if the art doesn't appeal to me. I always give it a chance, but if the art sucks and the plot has said nothing to me, it's dropped.

I'm sure most people are like that. They choose based on what they like (in art or story) and hope it doesn't disappoint in the area that wasn't part of the choosing process. For example: if you see a manga that has the most amazing art, but the plot does nothing for you, you might drop it or keep going because the art is just THAT good. Or vice versa...

I agree with Magpie... Beautiful art is great, and there are times I'll admit if I'm reading a manga I really like but the art is a little distracting I sometimes think that it would make the story even better with better art-- but ultimately, what I like the most about manga are characters and story lines. If it has a terrible plot and obnoxious characters but it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, I'm not positive I would bother continuing to read it. I know several people said they'd as well be reading novels if they didn't like the art but to me it works more the other way around-- if I liked the art but not the story, I may as well just flip through some art books or magazines or something and find it to be far less aggravating. Or even just troll really good fanart sites.

Whether I'm reading a book or manga or watching a movie or tv series, what I ultimately care about is whether I feel any sort of emotional connection to the characters or plot. If I don't, then I don't care about the whole thing. There are some series that the art threw me off a little in the beginning because it was so different but I was intrigued by something in the story so I kept watching/reading. And there are other series where I liked the art but couldn't stand the characters over time so I stopped reading it altogether and grew frustrated that I was even that invested in the storyline to wonder at all about what would happen. But in those cases, it's easier to just read a summary later to have the questions answered.

To me, One Piece is a perfect example of art style and peoples' reactions. Several of my friends are die hard fans (like me). But a few people I know who haven't gotten into it have said it's solely based on the art not being typical of Japanese manga, yet when I'm telling them about character comments or plot points later or how I feel about the series they are really interested and say they think they'd actually like it. Sometimes they get excited about the plots/arcs I tell them about. To me, it's a shame that they're letting the difference of art style stop them from getting into something they would obviously enjoy.

I don't really think that art, characters, and plot can completely be separated from each other, so I suppose in my mind if 2/3 of that triangle work for me then it's worth it to invest my time in it.

It depends on how bad it is. When i first saw Ares the art was pretty weird, but i ended up reading it and it was one of the best manga I've read. The thing i can't stand about art in some manga is when there's way too much going on in a panel and i cant tell what i should be looking at.
