My personal take is that any honorifics that can be done away with should be done away with. Some are pesky and hard to translate, but others can be easily and naturally replaced, or just left out.

Chose stuff that doesn't translate well, and somewhere between that and as much as possible. I can't stand "None. The whole thing must be localized to my own culture" or when they change the characters names. If I wanted to read American comics, I would be reading American comics. People who like that crap need to realize it is NOT your culture, and if you feel that everything should stick with your own countries work.

Part of what makes reading manga and manwha interesting is that it comes from a different culture with at times different ideas and customs. Its an insight into other cultures and sometimes what they value. For instance, Honorifics are interesting and important because it tells you about the relationship and potential tensions/conflicts among characters. This is an interesting contrast to places like the US that have become less formal in the last 20-30 years and more casual with how people address and interact with one another.

I for one enjoy the stuff that doesn't translate well and is kept in the original language. It makes me want to learn or figure things out and that's part of the enjoyment. I also like it when some companies that bring stuff over and publish it include cultural or historical notes that add meaning to the work.

I do like when people leave in honorifics. I mean, if its setting is in Japan, it's gotta have the honorifics, right? I would understand leaving out honorifics if it were a manga set in America or something. But some words really don't need to be left Japanese. I get a bit irritated when I see the word "baka" in scanlations. I love the word but not if it's randomly placed in an English sentence.

Do you know someone in Japan during this Earthquake: Yes, they are OK, Yes, haven't heard but they should be OK, Yes, waiting to hear or No.
In events like these, facebook is handy just to get a message like "My floor is now a mess".
