I'm tired of the same rehash and one-dimensional characters so I want some recommendations on some. Tell me your favorite character and why. I don't care what kind of story it is as long as it's your favorite character. Thanks

Vinland Saga's Thorfinn on his 360% change in belief (from a revenge driven battle hardened soldiers to calm battle vets like his father)

Historie's Eumenes craftiness and strategic insight gained during his study and life ordeal

Mugen no Juunin's Manji & Black Lagoon's Rock on their anti heroism attitude yet still able to salvage, how do i say, a fair amount of forgiveness in them

Eden - It's an Endless World! 's Elijah Ballard for his attitude on coping with many suffering perhaps

hope this helps, these were my most memorable characters i could recall.

I really like March from March Story. I like how she has her weak moments, but gets right back up (usually with a vengeance). The side characters are very interesting too, and their emotions feel pretty real to me.

I second Eden - It's an Endless World! although nothing ever goes right in that story (literally). Just when things look good or you get attached to a character, everything gets ruined. The first few chapters are a bit confusing because there is a shift in the characters. My favorite character is Elijah. He's not exactly a common character, he doesn't have any special traits and he's not heroic either although he's not a cruel or insensible. But when he resents someone, he will try to hurt him in every way possible and he comes with tons of character development.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There was one incident where an antagonist gouged out an eye and cut off an ear of a woman that the main liked and the main got him back by sniping the woman that the antagoinist loved and his brother. The antagonist shoots himself 10 seconds later in agony

Chouka Kou: Do not let the description fool you! It is really good and if I were to to judge the art, I would give it two letter grades above an A+. My favorite is the main heroine. She's no sissy but she's not one of those over powered females from a battle manga with too much sex appeal. Her goal overall is revenge but it doesn't get too into that topic and she often uses dirty methods in order to get things to be advantageous for her (She's really cunning/smart) but she's still a kind person

HITO HITORI FUTARI: The main hero is definitely not one of your common characters. He's middle aged and not exactly special except the fact that he's the prime minister. He starts out as a really weak leader but he changes soon after a severe incident which lets him see his guardian spirit which is the main heroine. The heroine helps him get stronger and he becomes a strong dependable leader.

Battle Angel Alita headstrong, adaptable, skilled, yet sensitive, naïve and fragile. Just watching the character grow and evolve is enough.

Legend of the Sun Knight & Legend of the Sun Knight (novel) - Sun is so sly and vengeful! He's funny, master of schemes, has an amazing memory (especially for revenge), prodigy in everything but sword-fighting, and would have been the best cleric/pope/necromancer/thief/villain in history if only he didn't choose to be the Sun Knight! Lol. It's not often you get the clever mischievous type as the hero.

Saver - Extremely calm female lead who fight, lead, save tons of ass, but doesn't try to save everyone (naive idealists make me sick; cynical idealists are okay xD). She doesn't even lose her cool around "her man." I can honestly see how the guys can fall in love with her (maybe that's a biased statement because she's my lady crush cool ).

Black Haze - Bold-faced liar! It's not often I read about a protagonist calmly lying by the skin of their teeth and getting away with it. I love it. He's also a famous magician and it's really funny when people get starstruck. I also like it when he shows off and gives that "suck on this" smirk to people he pisses off.

Warau Kanoko-sama & sequel Koi Dano Ai Dano - Scheming female lead with just enough cynicism. I like that she uses her averageness to mislead people about what she's really like. She also smirks a lot when she one ups people.

Cheese in the Trap - While I like the female lead, I think her love interest is several times more... interesting. xD Two-faced guy who uses people while maintaining his nice guy persona. I like that he's very subtle in his "evilness." He really does seem like a nice guy most of the time too! So it's rather chilling when I see him being cruel or manipulative. (But I really love reading those moments). At the same time, I really do believe that he genuinely loves the female lead in his own way. While not full-blown, I think he has a lots of symptoms of sociopathy (which is something that I've always found interesting for a long time).

Talking About... - Amber is my favorite. She's a strong independent woman who don't need no man... other than for sex, lol. I like that she isn't ashamed of her player approach, but at the same time doesn't flaunt it. I especially like how she uses the innocent look sometimes to catch guys. She doesn't plan on getting married or having kids. She's living her life exactly how she wants to. Some of you may say that you've read this character before, but I would say that very few of them feel like a real person as this one. In my experience, this type of character is normally relegated to being a one-dimensional sexy side character used for fan service.

X/1999 - Kamui is a tragic character that I can't help but feel for. He's bit angsty (some people don't like him for that), but gradually manages to find his resolve. He dislikes that he seems to be playing into hands of fate, but still fights to hopefully change to future. I wish CLAMP would finish this story already (since only 2 more volumes were planned), but it's already been over a decade since this manga has been on haitus. Take that Hunter x Hunter fans, pssh.

In summary, I like anti-hero(in)es.
