you guys have all seen animated movies that rely heavily on 3D rendered CGI animation. Japanese examples would be like Advent Children and Appleseed. So do you guys think the future of anime lies in 3D computer rendered animation?

But isn't it more expensive and time-consuming to produce? How would it all work out for 1-episode-per-week series and such?

Well, I like CGI if its done well, but there are certain animes that REALLY wouldn't look good if they were done in CGI.

It might be now, but maybe not so much in years to come. Personally I think CGI doesnt render facial expressions as well as just plain animation does.

Yes, it does. Just look at Cloud and Tifa's faces.
Or do u mean like those silly faces they use in anime? >.< Yeah, CGI can't copy that. xD

I just dislike it when they combine CGI wit 2d art form. Looks awful, especially when used with robot anime's such as Vanguard.
Either its just pure CGI, or neither. As to I enjoyed Advent Children.
A few exceptions of course though.
anime has to be 2D d( >_< )b, just my opinion though.

.hack//G.U. Trilogy is an anime movie and it uses CGI. Not all anime is 2D, just most of it.

I think it's nicer when they do the actual drawings and much of the coloring by hand, and then use computers to give more life/atmosphere to the imagery, as well special effects. The CLANNAD anime is a good example of hand made work enhanced by computer effects (such as haze, HDR lighting, color effects, particle effects, distortion, water [falls, lakes, etc.], bloom, glare, lens flare, etc.).

Don't know, I thought it looked cool in the new Macross and liked it in Titan A.E. (Yes, not an anime, but pertinent to the discussion). It works for backgrounds or machinery, to add an element/edge and can make for some very cool fusion. I think the Suzimiya Haruhi anime also has some very funky scenes that use the technique precisely to show a difference between their world and the virtual world-nice use of "special effects" in an anime. If the blend doesn't feel right, I can't imagine it working(like I can't imagine a mix working in a a run of the mill shoujo-though actually you could do nice visual jokes/treats with it, like furniture or other set pieces) -but I think that holds true of doing any stylistic shift.

It'll go both ways. intense cgi is already coming out for some animes, although only certain parts, but no matter how good graphics get they'll always remember why anime is so good in the first place. It is because it is unrealistic. The animation is unreal, the stories are unreal and it gives us a break from reality.

And CGI doesn't do the same thing? It's still unreal, just a computer program. I agree that traditional animation will stick around, but that's largely 'cause some stories are better told in that medium. For example, it's be really hard for me to imagine a Studio Ghibli film in CGI because the coldness (and modernity) of the medium just doesn't fit with the usual Studio Ghibli theme.

As a CG artist, I can say that CG can render ">.<" style faces as well as any animation, depending on the artist's skill.
UV mapping IS essentially translating 2d imagese onto 3d models.
That being said, I doubt anime will go to CG, as it is costly to produce.

I like anime's 2D style much more than CGI. Eventually, CGI might get used more extensively if it becomes cheaper and more easily integrated with the conventional and popular anime styles, but I think that's a long, long time away.
