Of course, otherwise I wouldn't know how to speak English or know what the solution to 2 + 2 is. : )

Highly important! Even if the subject is useless, since as long as you use your brain it's fine. Nothing is more annoying that a person who cannot think for themselves and/or cannot grasp concepts and methods...

I currently feel that my high school can no longer serve a purpose for me (beyond maybe some English help). I sincerely hope college will live up to my standards.

Well, I dropped out twice and still got into college, if that tells you anything. 😐

Not that I think school is useless, I just think it needs to reach for higher standards. Public school at least.

I guess school only lightly teaches the basic stuff. Maybe a teach you a little deeply the subjects not just let you scratch the surface.
I am actually mad at the schools in the US since when you complete High School, you only get a High School Diploma that may allow you to find jobs easier but it doesn't teach you a career, unlike schools in my country (Honduras) once you get out of High School you leave with a career to defend yourself. I feel disappointed that I wasted my time for nothing by studying in a US public school. >__>

Perhaps I'm at risk of sounding like one of those preachers but ever been to a place without an education system?

Don't forget it's not there simply serve you, it's there for the country. If you want to live in a country with laws, functioning technology and an economy, it's not just useful, it's essential.

I hate school. But it is useful.
It prepares you for society and all its expectations and downfalls.
The stuff they teach there is useful and necessary, you see how countries end up when a majority of their population is uneducated.

This poll seems like something a 14 year old would come up with.

School was as much about social learning as it was about actual knowledge.
There are a lot of things that they try to cram in that isn't really worth it, and it just falls back out the other ear once the quarter/semester/whatever is over - so can you really call that learning? I didn't.

However, there are some basics that are useful, and there's a lot of experience available if you take the time to actually look for it instead of presuming that everything is a waste or that you know more than your teachers do (ok, not in all cases, but at least some). When you find one of those teachers, latch on and seek out that knowledge.

Quit waiting for the 'free ride' of life, because once you graduate, the free ride is over, kiddies.

I voted the last option 😛

It is useful though. I can hang out with my friends, and you do learn actual knowledge.

Education is one of the most important thing in your life. However, it's only as useful as you make it out to be. Judging by some of the responses on this thread, many of you lack the motivation and desire to want to learn. Didn't Naruto teach you anything?

That's a silly question, of course school is useful.

  1. It tells you about how the world works. Basic knowledge of math, science, language, geography (high school only teaches basic level), tells you why things are the way they are. Without knowledge humans are hardly better than animals.

  2. It helps you to choose a career. You take introductory levels of classes in biology, chemistry, math, etc., to see what you might choose as your major. Unless you're one of those people who waste years of tuition in college taking random classes without declaring a major. Also it helps to build study skills you need in university.

  3. It builds a foundation for the courses you take in college. For instance I have a degree in electrical engineering, and the first courses I took in university were calculus and physics courses which assume you already have some introductory knowledge. Of course the knowledge learned in university is absolutely essential for careers in sciences/maths.

The thing is...you never know what's going to be useful later on & what's not.

Some stuff I thought was going to be useful wasn't, and some stuff I thought was useless or marginally useful has been WAY more use in life than I ever thought it would be. Even if you think you know where you're going in your life and what you'll be doing, there's still a fair chance that 10-20 years down the road you'll be somewhere (at least a little bit) different and may need different skills/knowledge than you thought you would. And that's totally aside from things like social skills and learning to just get the damn assignment done even if you think it's stupid and/or have no "great" ideas~

Of course school's not the only place to learn things, but if your already IN school, you're better off getting what you can from ALL of your classes (even the deadly boring ones).

I'm bothered that this poll has no option that lets me say that school is useful without you assuming that I'm preaching "morals", doc. The standard high school level leaves people with an education that can best be referred to as borderline, and without it most people would be far below that line. They'd be mindless cattle without the skills to interpret the world around them nor the will to acquire them.

But sorry that I want to be able to have a decent conversation and enjoy the fruits that having a moderately educated population provides. But if you'd be happier talking to fools with rocks for brains and occupying your time without that lovely computer that you use to create inane topics, continue convincing people that public schooling is drivel.
