Yep, yep.

No matter how "obvious" ( 🤨 ) the tag is it still needs a description. People will
always find a way to misinterpret. It should be as less ambiguous as possible.

Do you think the categories should be moderated even more strictly?
Well... there are certain things that need maintaining, such as consolidating terms that are really the same (like "4 koma," "4koma," and "4-koma") and things like that, but I think these things are pretty well taken care of already.

Also, should subjective tags be allowed? ie. "cool lead", "epicness", etc.
Not really. Categories are there to help people find (or avoid) manga that is a certain kind (4-koma, for example) or that contains certain things (cats or ghosts, for example). Totally subjective categories aren't very descriptive or helpful, they're just clutter. Once people vote "no" on it a lot, though, the word should be small and hopefully not get in the way too much. But, technically, subjective categories are really just weeds and so they should be pulled out, so long as it's not too inconvenient for those in charge, you know?

Do you actually use the categories (frequently)?
Yes. I find them very helpful. They give me a better idea of what a manga is, and so help me avoid things I want to avoid and easily find manga that have something I like.

Should there be a description box for each category? (y/n) (remembered thanks to Bae).
Well.. maybe for a few of them. Most terms are pretty obvious... you know, "baseball," "hamsters," "shy girl," etc. But there are some terms that I feel could use a little description. For example, I came up with some terms that describe a certain situation pretty well, but they could be misunderstood. For example, I use "treasure hunt" for when there's a special something(s) that people are looking for, and "deadline" when there's a critical date involved. Also, there are some words people may not know. "Heterochromia," for example, describes the condition where a person has two different colored eyes, but the average person may not know that (they could just look it up though, I s'pose). But having descriptions for every single category would be overkill, so if description boxes are implemented, there should only be a select few tags that have them. As for implementation, perhaps the person who initialized the tag could have the option to describe it, and there should be a warning that says something like, "Please only input a desciption if it is absolutely necessary to avoid confusion," or something like that.

Do you have any suggestions to further improve it? (optional)

  1. consolidation of singulars and plurals
"witch" and "witches" and other similar things should be combined into one tag. It would be ideal if, if someone typed either "witch" or "witches," it would automatically be recognized and so only the combined term would be added. This way it would cut down on maintenance work. The exact format for combinations ("witch/witches" vs. "witch/es" vs. "witch(es)," etc.) should be determined, announced, and regulated as necessary.

  2. consolidation of synonyms
The best example of this in use is the "cafe/bakery/bar/restaurant" tag. This is good and should be done with more terms. Also it would be awesome if the components could automatically be recognized, whether singular or plural, too, so that if someone types "restaurant" or "bakeries," only the consolidated term would be added.

  3. "contains" instead of "begins with" searching
I'm not sure how much this would help others, but I know it would help me, if when I typed in something to add a category to a manga, the suggestions that came up would be categories that contained, not just began with, what I had typed in. For example, sometimes I want to add something like "other world" or "magic world," but I forget what categories to that effect exist. If, by typing in "world," it would bring up all the options, and then I could pick the most appropriate one, that would be very convenient.

Yes, I think so. Some categories posted are extreamly helpfull and help give info on a series. However, very often major spoilers are mentioned.

Also, should subjective tags be allowed? ie. "cool lead", "epicness", etc.
mmm, I guess so. It comes down to the people's vote I guess.

Do you actually use the categories (frequently)?
Yes, I havent tried searching for series with categories all that much, but when looking over a series, I look at Categotries first, then Genres then description.

That would be nice, so yes.

Some categories should be taged under "Spoiler!" and hiden unless you want to see them.
Some categories most people disaprove of should be removed, a way for people to moderate this would be nice.

YES!! While I do not really use the category type search much I think that it could be very useful if there was only rather objective type lists. Now I am not saying that the admins should spend a lot of time policing this, but I think that if there is 3 more no votes then yes votes then it should automatically be removed.

Also, should subjective tags be allowed? ie. "cool lead", "epicness", etc.
Again I do not mind that the subjective tags are there but it would be nice to be able to get rid of them through voting. In addition if a tag is used only once or maybe twice then just remove it. That would probably get rid of most of the subjective tags. Probably do a cleaning between once a month and once every 6 months.

I do not use the categories very often but if the format was changed a bit I could see using them a lot more.

Should there be a description box for each category?
Maybe a small description box that comes down when the mouse is over the word with a 2 or 3 second delay.

Do you have any suggestions to further improve it?
The one thing I would suggest to improve the categories would be to have an optional filter to filter out certain categories. Not a check-box type filter like for genres but more of a type in bar that is linked to the available categories like the category edit is. I would suggest then adding onto our filter pages a list at the bottom of filtered categories and the ability to remove that filter. I would especially like to filter out the 4-koma category.

The only other thing that I mite want is the ability to filter specific titles, but I think that a category type filter would be a bit more useful and make less clutter.

I would say no. Or if you allow it only as "user tags" or so, which sets it apart from the categories.

Do you actually use the categories (frequently)?
Yes, I often look at the categories.

Yeah, I really miss the descriptions. It would be nice if you have the descriptions as mouseover I think.

There should be a setting in the user cp to always show / hide spoiler categories.
A hierarchy / weight for the categories would also be nice, for example like on AniDb.
A category filter / colorer would also be nice. (like with the genres)
