Crimson Hero not really a he, but this shojo manga is intense, especially the main heroine. She is not allowed to play volleyball by her strict grandmother but in the end she still wants to even on occasions working herself into a fever. She leaves her home and tries to overcome any adversity in order to achieve her volleyball dream.

He doesn't sacrifice himself for others, but Me and the Devil Blues is pretty much cut and dried the description you want.
