Using lame excuses like "I'm only 14, what do you expect?" or "I'm only a kid, I can''t do that.", is the worst sort of cop-out.

If you are aware enough to use those excuses, then they already don't apply to you. Using them in this way doesn't make us think "Oh, yeah, he/she's right, he/she's only 14, so it's cool.", instead it makes us think "This person is a lazy idiot".

So stop. You can be better than that. Make an effect to be better than that. Or one day, the excuse will start to apply to you.

As for the topic, I pretty much agree wholeheartedly with Cass. Pretty much took the words straight out of my mouth... or mind, rather, since I wasn't going to actually say them. Anyway, I prefer specifics in manga. It makes the meaning much more apparent, and often I am able to understand a manga much better if its more exact, instead of set in broad, general terms with many different meanings. Not to mention I too use those words in my day to day life, although maybe not as frequent as I use the broader forms of the words.

Oh, and who DOESN'T use startled? (Or, at least, I think thats what you were trying to say; not sure if you meant that or another word, since your spelling leaves something to be desired) Scared doesn't mean the same thing as it, nor does frightened. They both mean you're afraid of something, whereas startled means surprised and scared, both at the same time.

Also, for rubbish, how in the hell are you supposed to know the translator/proofreader ISN'T from England, or someplace where they use it like that a lot? They may be so, and besides, it gets its point well enough across.

I encourage people to use simple words all the time in their writing because they get tripped up trying to use complicated language (and structure) and end up with incoherent babble. So for writing I agree with you that most of the time, especially for a beginner, simpler words are better.

No, I'm simple minded. I've taken various witting courses and I currently have an A in my English class. It's not that its the words are complicated it's just i have a love for simple words. True enough, words like startled and elated are more descriptive, but, can you not get the same point across with simpler words? I've read various plays and a great works of literature, however, i still prefer simple books.

Nopes, sorry. In fiction it's not just about getting the point across, but also about setting the tone and mood and emotion. It's like trying to use a bright primary color yellow when you're trying to set a golden vibe: the yellow's gonna give a bright happy feel, but it's not gonna give quite the same feel as the gold.

It's alright when scanlators use synonyms of the words that were originally in there. But I hate it when scanlators completely change the lines characters say in an attempt to make it sound cooler or more badass,

A good example is the line Shinji says on the bottom panel at the end of Bleach -97.

IMO it wasn't even necessary to change that last line like that. It took all the coolness out of that scene and then made it to where they were trying to make Shinji and the Vizards look more cool and badass (Even though they need no help with that 🙄 ).

You seem more close-minded than simple-minded. 😐

Look, this whole "using simpler words" thing all boils down to a matter of opinion. You and other people prefer scanlations that simplify the words, while other people and I like it when they use synonyms that are more complex. That's just the way it is, no matter how anybody tries to justify it. You can't say that people are being too serious when they don't agree with your opinion. This whole topic about which is better HAS no right answer. It all depends on people's preferences.

whether the language in manga is formal or informal, that depends on the type of character in each manga...if the character is a king, do you think he'll talk like a normal person?

the social status of a character is important in determining the speech and manners of that character...a translator SHOULD translate the dialogues into language that's appropriate for each type of character, even if the character uses words that are not casual and informal

ps: stop bashing the kid, it's getting ridiculous...if you have nothing to contribute to the topic, then don't post...don't just sidetrack to other subjects (spam much?) ....one person voicing out the general's opinion is enough...there's no need for 5 people to repeat the same thing again and again 🙄
