Opposites attract, but they don't match well. I can see how people would be attracted to those who are different from them, but if they're too different, that could cause a lot of conflicts in a relationship. I guess there has to be more similarities (especially based on views and whatnots) than differences.

Maybe it stems from an admiration? If you see someone that's talented at things you can't do and you're impressed, maybe it evolves until you confuse it with attraction.

This is soo true...

Anyway about the falling in love part, I can't imagine myself falling for someone completely different from me...There must be some point of encounter especially for the things that really matter to me...ideals, principles,etc especially if we're talking about long term commitments...

Well I think the phrase "Your other half" fits well here. Pieces that you are missing will be filled by your opposite. Now you don't need to have an opposite to do that, but it just more likely.
