According to dictionary.com
Pirate:-a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea.
Piracy:-robbery or illegal violence at sea.

I can only think of one pirate in the One Piece manga that fits the descriptions/definitions above. (If you know of others, please share...)

Buggy the Clown
He doesn't give a rats a*s about values. He's all about the money, gold, jewelry and treasure. He will rob other ships, he will loot from villages on the shore and he will look for buried treasure (with the help of an old map, of course!). Now thats a typical/REAL pirate if I ever saw one.

Let me take the word illegal violence here. beating the crap of government funded pirates would probably fit under that category. Nami is a seafaring thief, sounds like a great definition of a pirate. The whole gang of 'em beat the crap out marines before, escaped other marines. I could list a lot of other stuff for the other pirates.

Nice way of putting it dude! You seriously got me thinking.

Illegal violence at sea/shore:-Pwning the marines and marine aligned pirates (Moria, Crocodile)
-Beating the crap out of government officials (CP9, Spandam, small fries, etc.)

Robbery:-"Stealing" from Skypea and Moria.

The only thing missing there was terrorizing civilians. But they have achieved by knocking the daylights out of a few Tenryuubito!

Thanks a lot for your perspective. The Strawhats are definitely full fledged pirates!

yea! I second that. Creek has loads of ships, sub captains and subordinates. He has a freakin armada forgodsakes!! 😲

Kuro and Creek killing their own subordinates with EASE reminds me of Captain Hook from the Peterpan Movie (not the cartoon)..

Yeah I'd say that the pirates aren't too typical, but still pirates.
