Yeah,
tried cannabis once and instantly fell into the drug slump. There was no escaping it. Soon I was selling my body at the street corner... just to get my next fix laugh

I stay clear from addicting stuff and get drugs from only people I trust, so I don't think I'm at that point where I need the stuff.

Can you please specify the question in more detail?

I know a fair amount of detail on the topic but I need to understand your question better.

I class caffine, nicotine and alcohol as 'drugs'. Just because they are legal does not mean they aren't drugs. Are you only refering to illegal drugs such as cannabis, cocaine or heroin?

Are you asking if anyone has taken a hard drug and gone away without being addicted? The answer is yes, many people have tried different drugs and walked away without addiction. However some people are drawn towards certain substances, sometimes even first use of a drug can get someone craving and addicted.

Overall it depends on the individual, their personality and will power.

It's entirely the choice of the individual who gets offered the drug whether or not they take it. It's their choice if they want to risk it and try it, with the potential to get addicted - or their choice to turn it down and be safer.

However if you are going to try, some drugs are more habit forming/addictive than others. I'll give a list.

Drugs which have less addictive potential:
Ecstasy, LSD/Mushrooms, Cannabis, Alcohol.

Drugs with have more potential for addiction/abuse:
Amphetamine/Meth, Cocaine, Morphine/Heroin/Opiates, Nicotine/Tobacco.

This does not mean you can't take any of the above without becoming addicted, they just have more addictive potential.

I hope this helps!

This.

While weed may be a gateway drug, i have no interest in using other drugs, since i have seen what can happen.

This isn't a guarantee that it's safe, though. A friend did this & still died using the same amount as always. You never know what's mixed in or where your trusted individual got it from.

I know a few people who kicked their habits of hard drugs as well as alcohol, but more who can't or have died. Out of those who have, most still have the desire to use and some have repeated the cycle of using, kicking, and using again. However, those that have no desire or haven't gone back to it, are stronger and more determined to make something with their lives. At least, this is what the people that I know are like.

it wasn't me, but my friend's dad used to be very addicted to smoking / drinking. I'm not sure if you consider alcohol a drug but it's pretty much just as bad if you're a heavy drinker.

but he stopped doing both right away after, when intoxicated, he hit my friend pretty badly and she had to go to the hospital.

I honestly don't think there's any drug that's really "safe", though some are clearly more addictive than others. Part of it is going to depend on the individual's body chemistry/metabolism/whatever. Back in my college days I did a fair amount of drinking, but never had a problem NOT drinking; I also smoked cigarettes when I was with friends who smoked but never otherwise.

*Most* people don't get instantly addicted to alcohol or nicotine, but I have heard of people who have one drink or cigarette and that's it, the craving for more is always there. I haven't heard of anyone getting truly addicted to caffeine (the worst I've heard of is withdrawal headaches), but I suppose it could happen.

As DreamerSan wrote, drugs like meth, opiates, and cocaine are more likely to be instantly addictive and have more destructive consequences.

My advice to your friend would be to research the consequences if he/she DOES end up addicted, and decide whether it's really worth taking the chance. My answer would be "no way it hell is it worth taking that chance" but I tend to be kind of cautious about things that can have such serious consequences. none

You still haven't specified what drug your friend wants to try.

I'll just talk about weed since I have experience with it.

You don't get high the first time you smoke it. I don't know why but no matter how much you smoke it doesn't affect you the first time around. So I don't see anyone getting hooked just by trying it once.

It also isn't physically addictive. It can become a habit (just like anything) if you do it regularly enough but you wont go through any kind of physical withdrawals if you stop.

I go through periods where I smoke a lot and others where I don't smoke at all. I haven't quit because I don't want to. I has nothing to do with addiction.

You can't stop someone who is determined to try something. (some people are more curious than others...some people on MU know about some minor issues i've had months ago with a particular substance).

Link this guy to Erowid's Experience Vault because this has helped me a lot. Basically it is people truthfully saying their experiences with all types of drug, be it an addiction through hell, or people who admit they can never give up, or those who took it once and never enjoyed it or just walked away fine. It's advisable to read up a lot of experiences on a drug before you choose to take it yourself.

Good luck.
