Idk what tthe rage is about..... girls have fallen in love with their biological fathers in rl, and some have hooked up in rl(even tho they can't get married)..... kinda destroys the whole doesn't make sense argument when they are doing what has been done, at a much less severe level... idk why it is raged at, the chick daisuke was after wanted a more financially secure husband from what I could see. The male kid fell prey to his genitals when he was hit on, and the girl had torrents of irrational emotion....now that I think about it cuz none of that happens in rl I understand the anger .... wait......9,9.

Fact is, however hard it is for you to accept it, this is an ending that people in a similar situation could arrive at(and happily btw)... unless you can find anything that is out of character, or couldn't happen in reality don't bash it. His entire goal was her happiness, he made sure it wasn't just some impulse and adapted to her views over two years, he and she were happiest in each others company.... and they have 10 times the compatability of most of the couples that stay together in rl.... but let's just ignore all this true love bull and b!#$% about how the love is wrong and evil because it doesn't conform to everyone elses.

Edit: random dead topic bump ftw

I posted a comment on the manga page as well, but I think it's probably better said here ... the ending was HORRIBLE, not because it was incestuous (though I will address that nonsense in a minute) It was horrible because it took something beautiful and well crafted and within three volumes made it ... snip

I agree w/ everything you said. I was more offended by how sloppy it was all handled. I've seen this development before in other series (Kodomo no Jikan, Speed Grapher), but the difference is that in those cases the stories were based around that very concept. Here, it seems the author just spammed an ending to create discussion.

Don't give that bull about the mangaka wanting to do something but not having the time. That's bullsh!t. They could've just as easily ended it w/o all that garbage and it would've been fine. Other authors have done the same thing w/ less time.

"All that garbage" as in the sweet ending the author had intended for a long time. I didn't mind the end to this. I've seen better ones that were more gradual, but I've seen a TON that were worse, and as for the context I couldn't be happier with the pairing, and I hope to see rins kids in some omake chapters or second season.

Sweet ending the author intended my eye!

The series got unexpectedly popular, the author panicked about where she was going with it, and decided to retreat into traditionally abhorrent shoujo and josei tropes.
Shodensha probably did a poll, found Daikichi was the most admired male, exchanged their brains with a dead hamsters, and said "Go for it, make the man who wiped up her pee and took her to preschool, her sexual partner".

The end appeals to two types:

The first are emotionally damaged cretins with abandonment issues, who self-identified with Rin (instead of Daikichi like everyone else). They saw Daikichi as their ideal father figure/protector type lover from the beginning, and as Rin was their avatar, they started shipping the two early on.
They mistook their distorted romantic projections with authors intent, and assume it was always intended to be that way. Hence they can't understand the fury which normal, well-balanced people feel as they watched the grotesque ending unfold.

The second type would be pedophiles who did indeed self-identify with Daikichi like everyone else and enjoy watching a good grooming.

Both types are pathetic freaks I wouldn't waste my time crossing the street to spit on.

I had a feeling the amount of butthurt people would rise again and bump this old thread after the recent extra volume releases...

Mister, I think you need to look up the definition of pedophilia and tell me how it applied to the ending.
Also, whatever happened to liking an ending just because?
What about the people who accepted the ending as a fictional story unrelated to the real world? Are they sick in the head too?

Kind of a cop-out in how the author keeps everything we see of Rin/Daikichi extremely platonic in the extra volume. Would have been nice to see a hint of their relationship developing... (I'm not really talking physically, but in how they interact with each other.) As it stood things just feel slightly uncomfortable, like they still haven't worked much out.

The second half made no sense from volume to volume and the ending is just so bad. Killed the manga for me.
@Great. Lol 😀 . Spot on.

The way I see it, Rin and Daikichi had a father-daughter relationship or at least a uncle-niece relationship due to the supposed blood relations. I don't know about Rin, but I find it highly unlikely Daikichi would be able to see Rin in a romantic light since he did raise her like a father. For Rin, the lack of progression due to the time skip makes it hard for me to believe she would have such feelings as well. Just the fact that Daikichi helped her in a time of need does not suffice for a good explanation since she was still so young. The whole situation is ridiculous in my opinion and seems like some bizarre wish-fulfillment. For those that are arguing this is just fiction, that may be fine for you, but I prefer these types of stories to be ground in reality so I can actually empathize with characters.

Feel like the first 4 vol is "Usagi" and then the last 6 vol is the "Drop".

Edit :
Vol 1-4 = Usagi
vol 5-9 ; Drop
vol 10 : Usagi Drop

I kind of agreed with your comments. I actual read this the second time around and I felt like the ending had much less impact then what a remembered. To be honest the entire second read, even knowing the out come, I was shipping the Kouki's mom and Daikichi.. I just never understood why the mangaka didn't go down that road. The both of them were interested in each other. Didn't really feel the love Rin showed for Daikichi. If anything it felt like she simply never wanted to be separated from him. The ending with Daikichi x Rin for me it = 😕

People get disappointed with such change flows and endings like Usagi Drop's.
They may be unable to make sense of it, dislike it or even hate it big and regret reading.

  • I'm with the bold.

BUT YOU CANNOT DROP USAGI JUST FOR THE ENDING (as a weak point)
Overall plot flow and story make up for the bad ending and starts,
or even make them sympathiable somehow.

I say: Too bad it turned out and into that, but no taking to the heart. Something like that it is...
"Spoilers don't spoil anything"

Adds: If the work was kind of a book of proposal, we would throw to the author's head.
But it is a fiction story. Laugh it off 😀 ??...

I might have said this before, but I think the high amount of rage for this ending is mostly because the readership it gained for the first four volumes. It doesn't have art that appeals to a younger crowd, and it was a story about the trials a single parent faces when raising a child alone. So the type of crowd reading this would be adults seeking that sort of content, obviously.

Then it's like BAM! Rin X Daikichi! By magic, she's no longer Daikichi's aunt! And Daikichi is a guy who would consider a romantic relationship with the girl he carefully raised since she was six, because he totally seemed the type to do that!

And the readership the manga gained from the beginning just couldn't handle it. I thought it was a shocking departure myself. It'd be like Dog Days turning into Old Yeller, where in the end, Cinque has to put down a rabid Millhiore with a gun.

I don't rage about it though, because there's at least a little foreshadowing in the general theme. A little, but it's there.

Let's resurrect this thread again 😀

I've finally finished this manga, took really long time but at last I have time to finish it..

Hi, I agree with you. I found Usagi Drop from the anime, it was cute and the story was interesting.
Now after I've finished it, I don't hate the story or ending but I don't really like it either. It feels forced.
The anime company did the right thing to only adapt the childhood story, maybe more (anime only watching)people would rage if they know the story afterwards lol.

I think that the story after volume 4 was not in the original draft. The author said herself at the last volume that she only intended it to be 1 volume manga.
I guess that the editor forced the mangaka to continue because it's popular.
The story changed from "single old man raising a kid who likes a single old lady who is also raising a kid" to "generic school story" and then to "single old man somehow want to marry the daughter he raised". 🤣

I have other things to write but I think this is enough, she should have splitted the after childhood story to Usagi Drop 2. That way she can still add story in the Usagi Drop 1 without any restraint.
