Here's how the way things have been running goes in the US:

-Downloading: legal - they can't catch you, they can't stop you unless you totally crash your ISP with who knows what
-Uploading: illegal - whenever the US targets copyright violators, they get the source, not the people downloading. getting all the downloaders is totally impractical and useless, because there will always be more people.

IRC is safer than direct or bittorrent, fyi.

Also helps to have major players like Hollywood on their federal butts to make them do something. As of yet the feds just don't see much use in fighting the manga/anime downloads here.(Thank you manga gods!)

I know bit torrent breaks up a file in tons of pieces then sends them in no special order to another pc while connected to others and reassembles it thus cutting down on people being able to track you and you being able to claim ignorance later on as long as the file never finished DLin.

But how is IRC saver? I don't use it enough to know.

It's treated as a chat. Therefore, getting a file from an IRC bot is essentially the same as your friend sending you something.

its still illegal on the irc you're just thinking more deviously

I know it is. It's just less chance of people tracking you down. Besides, manga companies generally tolerate this illegal stuff because in the long run, it's really free advertising. Like, there are plenty of people out there who don't have IRC, Bittorrent, etc. for getting anything/don't want to use the internet. And how else will you read unlicensed manga? You can't.

It's 100% legal. Depending on where you live.

No, its not. If you seriously believe so, you're an idiot.

Xeronia:
When you enter or exit an IRC chat room, usually, your IP address is shown. It's no safer than using Bit Torrent, which also shows IP addresses.

IP addresses can easily be tracked down to your home address.

Before this topic gets out of hand, I am locking this thread.

You can feel free to discuss this further if you have anything left unsaid, in Personal Messages.

This topic is getting a bit out of hand, since everyone is chiming in their own opinions.

The topic wasn't about opinions, it was about the legal aspects of downloading manga.

The fact is downloading manga is illegal.

The fact also remains we all continue to do it. This site doesn't offer downloads, so we're a legal site, because we offer free information.

Topic done. If any other mods or admins wanna chime in, feel free to add.

I would just like to add that we're barely on the legal side of things, since we DO give links to places where to get downloads...Or else what's the point of the DL column on the release page? I guess on a real legal trial, that wouldn't protect us much...

While thats true, we're still sharing information. The hyperlink is just a bunch of text.

We're hosting NO files, so we're not in the wrong.

Freedom of information is a law. 😀
