hello, i'm looking for a realistic yuri manga. i don't know any examples because the only ones I've read have had a little too many "understanding" people when that's not how it actually works.

I don't know what you mean by that is not how it actually works. I know MANY lesbian/gay/bi individuals and pretty much everyone treats them like anybody else. Some are even married and have children.

so basically what youre saying is its typical to go to an all girls school where 100% of the girls are lesbians and all of the people in the town / city are lesbians and etc etc?

Manga no Tsukurikata
Octave
Aoi Hana
Girl Friends
Not sure if that these are along the veins that you're looking for, but they are along a more realistic vein than some. While most people accept the sexual preferences of the leads, there's still the anxiety and self-conscioussness about being different that they give a more human feeling.

Sasameki Koto Its shoujo-ai not yuri so theres no sex in it, but it fits your request for there to be people who are "ewww lesbians?" in it, you know?
edit: btw, on an unrelated note, this thread is probably going to be moved to yaoi/yuri soon.

That is not true.
Although the majority of threads are for BL.
As for the suggestions...
The most realistic I can think of are Honey & Honey and Plica. Very good and entertaining.
Highly recommend Dounika Naru Hibi (has yuri oneshots).
Cotton (shoujo ai) and others by the mangaka.
Titles by ONOZUKA Kahori and YAMAJI Ebine
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

If I had a fantasy self, it'd be a tentacle monster.

Pieta and Double House are great and address the issues of not being accepted in society. The latter deals more with society's views of mtf transsexuals than lesbians, though.
Oh, and the ones on mizuno's list are all good.
