LONDON (Reuters) - Reading in dim light won't damage your eyes, you don't need eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy and shaving your legs won't make the hair grow back faster.

These well-worn theories are among seven "medical myths" exposed in a paper published Friday in the British Medical Journal, which traditionally carries light-hearted features in its Christmas edition. Two U.S. researchers took seven common beliefs and searched the archives for evidence to support them.
Despite frequent mentions in the popular press of the need to drink eight glasses of water, they found no scientific basis for the claim.
The complete lack of evidence has been recorded in a study published the American Journal of Psychology, they said.
The other six "myths" are:
* Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight
The majority of eye experts believe it is unlikely to do any permanent damage, but it may make you squint, blink more and have trouble focusing, the researchers said.
* Shaving makes hair grow back faster or coarser
It has no effect on the thickness or rate of hair regrowth, studies say. But stubble lacks the finer taper of unshaven hair, giving the impression of coarseness.
* Eating turkey makes you drowsy
It does contain an amino acid called tryptophan that is involved in sleep and mood control. But turkey has no more of the acid than chicken or minced beef. Eating lots of food and drink at Christmas are probably the real cause of sleepiness.
* We use only 10 percent of our brains
This myth arose as early as 1907 but imaging shows no area of the brain is silent or completely inactive.
* Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death
This idea may stem from ghoulish novels. The researchers said the skin dries out and retracts after death, giving the appearance of longer hair or nails.
* Mobile phones are dangerous in hospitals
Despite widespread concerns, studies have found minimal interference with medical equipment.
The research was conducted by Aaron Carroll, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis, and Rachel Vreeman, fellow in children's health services research at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Apparently, even Clown U may be an unsuitable career college.

Somehow, all children share a "dislike" of clowns, with older ones possibly scared of them.

I can't imagine driving something like that just yet. Though I'll bet that in 30 years, all cars will look like that.

Double-dipping is bad.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080202/ap_on_he_me/double_d ipping;_ylt=AlKmnHkuCyoqsu7p2lfGYXGs0NUE
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Keep an eye on the salsa this Super Bowl Sunday: A researcher inspired by a famous "Seinfeld" episode has concluded that double dipping is just plain gross.
"That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip!" George Costanza was admonished on the show after he dipped a chip twice at a wake. That's not too far off, said Clemson University professor Paul L. Dawson.
Last year the food microbiologist's undergraduate students examined the effects of double dipping using volunteers, wheat crackers and several sample dips. They found that three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from an eater's mouth to the remaining dip sample.
"I was very surprised by the results," Dawson said in a telephone interview Thursday. "I thought there would be very minimal transfer. I didn't think we would be able to detect it."
The professor said the students' research didn't get into the risk behind such a bacteria transfer, but they got the idea.
"I like to say it's like kissing everybody at the party — if you're double dipping, you're putting some of your bacteria in that dip," Dawson said.
The results of the research are scheduled to be published in the journal Food Safety within the next six months, he said.

How come i missed this thread ?
The interesting and simple solution, some more things relate to aliens and if you like the beautiful cirlces.
Anyone who is having an artificial pacemaker in your chest, BEWARE (though i don't think there would be anyone with an implanted heart in this forum.
If you think your Mobile phone will always be safe.
Hm, interesting, i'm gonna do an experiment like this, maybe next week.
So, it's not our false that the world is getting hotter ? don't make me laugh... but they maybe right...Damn, i need more data and figures to believe .
Well, enough for today.
Edit : err, it must be recent ? i think we should change to anything that is interesting and latest in its field.

Optical storage isn't as appealing as it used to be. Blu-Ray seems to have done Sony more harm than good.

Waa,just noticed it... while GE scientists were thinking of a way to increase the materials' reflectivity - to 1% reflective holographic recording, some guys in Melbourne added gold nanorods onto the surface to make it a 5 dimensions optical recording, well 1-0 for Australia (actually it's more like 2000-100).
Hm, research on data storage has been quite popular lately,Magnetic data storage.

Weird how this info gets revealed in a short time period...

Physicists claim new quantum-teleportation record
- Physicists in China claim to have teleported the quantum states of photons nearly 100 km in free space, breaking the previous record by a factor of 100. The development could pave the way for satellite-based quantum communication, or fundamental tests of quantum mechanics over long distances.
