Ma in Maggie is pronounced the same as in man, right? So Maggie is wrong. If you can't read kana, then: the first syllable from "mother" and second from "Maggie".

If you pronounce the ma in Maggie the same way as in man it is correct - well japanese people say it that way.
Mother would be wrong because it goes with a different "a" - for mother you use /ˈmʌð.ə/ and for magi or Maggie it goes with /mæ/ as in magic

Um... no. You are wrong. It's just as I said. マ is not ma from man but ma from mama. There's no such syllable in Japanese as ma from man.

I heard in the anime that they pronounce Magi the same way as I do in Spanish. If I wanted to pronounce Magi in English as I heard they do in Japanese, I would use the same "a" that the words man, mama, magic and others have. There are three different "a" in the English phonetics: /æ/ /ʌ/ and /ɑː/ they have different pronunciations. If you want to say Magi in English, the "ma" syllable, in phonetics, goes with /æ/.

As far as I know mama's ma is different from man's ma—then again, I don't recall ever hearing anyone saying the word in English. Anyway my point is, in Japanese that is not how you pronounce it. Your conception of the way Japanese pronounce magi is wrong. The syllable is not ma in man or magic. The first syllable of magi, as I said, is that of mother. But as English is not my native language I'm not sure it's the same, but at least way more similar as that of man or magic.

What you heard in some anime is one thing. You don't speak Japanese. Perhaps you heard wrong. Perhaps they pronounced it as a foreign word. Nevertheless, in Japanese the word magi is not pronounced as you say it is. /mæ/ might be right for English "magic" but it's very wrong for Japanese "magi". Your example of /ˈmʌð.ə/ seems to be correct, so /mʌ/ should be at least as near as you can get to it in English.

EDIT: the first thing you need to do is accept the fact that you are wrong in the matter of how to pronounce magi in Japanese. Even if I'm wrong and you're right about everything else. I know how to say magi in Japanese just as well as you know how to say magic in English.

And this is why I don't sweat over pronunciations. Except to make fun of my friend when he messes up common words though. The shit he says, hehehe (it's all in good nature of course).

As for マ, I always thought it sounded like the mah in mud or the ah in blood. Ironically, none of those words have an a in it. Languages are kinda silly that way, which is why I'm gonna stick to my way saying magi. It's what I'm comfortable with and it pisses off the elitist weeaboo pricks. It's like I'm having my cake and eating it too 😀
