This genre is for las chicas, and what girl wants to look at a DD-cup when she can have a hot, sexy bishounen. Not to mention, the big-breasted girls are often minor characters or side-kicks. Besides, in shounen manga, almost all the females (lead or minor) have huge chests. It's only even.

There's plenty of shounen manga where some girls have breasts that are even flatter than the girls in shoujo manga, right ?

You expect a shoujo to have big breasts bouncing everywhere while fighting to the death when the main characters never die anyway?

I am huge fan of shounen manga, I've read plenty of shounen romance. Recently, they started to add many shounen with a heroine who have even flatter breasts than a average shoujo lead.

But my question was yeah, there is a lot of girls with that hairstyle in shounen, there must be a reason.

Most girls in shounen either have detached hair (like Shana from Shakugan no Shana), long ponytail or twintails. Very few of them have pigtails, but most of the time, it goes down to feets (like Misao from Rurouni Kenshin or Mea from To Love-Ru Darkness)

It's not like the demographic wants/needs that sort of fan service. If ever I wanted to read something in which the female lead is busty I'd probably go for a shounen rather than a shoujo.

Well, I suppose it could be attributed to the fact that breast sizes are smaller in Japan than America, but that would be generalizing it far too much.

I'm Chinese with an A cup and pretty much see no foreseeable growth in the future (my days of development are over 🤣 ) so I guess there could be a few reasons..

Shoujo heroines are usually meek.. now I have no idea what the breast and personality demographic for shoujo manga readers is, but perhaps it helps readers identify with the heroine better if the mangaka adds the one-two punch of shy with small breasts. I can tell you that I absolutely hate large-breasted women in manga, and not because I'm jealous - I just don't like how they're used. I suppose it can't be helped if it's an action series where the rules of physics have to play out, but they're so... exaggerated.

And... it kind of suits the mood better, but that's a personal opinion. Young, innocent love.. imagining the girl in Kimi ni Todoke with American D cups just makes me laugh out loud. I stress this is a personal opinion. Anyway, interesting discussion!

By now I doubt you're really interested in this thread, since it's gotten a bit debatey (and has been 4 years) but:

If you're referring to all Shoujo manga, then I think you should read more shoujos before deciding they have "no tits". Most are smaller than average, but not unrealistically so considering youth, concealing clothing and ethnicity. Of course there are some where the girls are very flat but it's not necessarily portrayed as normal or realistic. Art styles vary.

I'd say an important reason for smaller boobage is story context and innocent demeanor. Half the time it's about girly romantic idealism, wherein they focus on facial features/expressions and gestures above all else. Likewise, if a manga wants to focus on girls having big boobs solely, I doubt viewers are paying attention to what shoes they're wearing.

**AND as a girl (that's both Japanese and small chested), I do appreciate realistic proportion from chestier gals as well as your "no tit" ones which I must conclude, think do have tits. To speak on the behalf of other readers(not to say I'm wrong or bias) I doubt jealousy is the issue, it's just that it's neither a priority desire or relevant issue.

Because most the shoujo manga chicks are young teens or preteens and the majority of young girls at that age in Japan are flat chested. :/

This is just my opinion... I prefer flat chested heroine in shoujo manga, well since I'm a girl and I don't like to see the big boobs type heroine, I think most of girls don't like that.

And since shoujo manga is for girls, so maybe the mangaka wants to focus at the hot guys, lmao. That goes for shounen manga too, which is why so many of shounen manga have big boobs heroine.

Girls with big breast are usually in shounen mangas because most boys like it. I usually see average size in shoujo mangas because they usually take place in highschool. But if you are talking about the shoujo mangas where their eyes are overly large even for a manga they usually have small breast because they are suppose to look innocent and cutesy or something. 🙂
